Canadian Pacific's 645 train heads west for North Dakota with some eastern power at the helm as they ease across the Mississippi River. I caught wind of them in St. Paul and got to listen to them claw up the hill at the Westminster tunnels with their heavy train of sand loads in tow.

A pair of NS rebuilds, one from Wabtec and one from Progress Rail, lead Norfolk Southern manifest freight 376 as it heads north over High Bridge, crossing over the Kentucky River in High Bridge, Kentucky. Completed in 1877 by the Cincinnati Southern Railway and standing 275 feet tall, it was the tallest bridge above a navigable waterway in North America and the tallest railroad bridge in the world until the early 20th century.

With its journey over the Port Road Branch complete, NS 24M passes through the crossovers at PERRY and swings rightward toward its final destination of Baltimore. A single SD70ACC provides power today. Although 3800 feet long, the train is almost entirely baretables - the three containers up front were the only loads.

...Midwest Division of NS, that is. 255 rumbles west past Angle Crossing Rd. between Cerro Gordo and Oakley. The clouds almost got the best of me here, but thankfully broke just long enough for me to grab this shot. And of course, you guessed it, an ACC on the point.

The early February sky isn't doing much to help the lighting at Bobolink road bridge, as Canadian Pacific's westbound train 471, climbs out of the Reeseville Marsh basin. The leading locomotive is carrying a yellow "thoroughbred" mane, indicating this locomotive has been rebuilt from a DC powered unit to AC, making it more suitable for heavy tonnage.

Almost 2 years later and not much had changed at the derailment site, which resulted in the single crossover being removed, as well as a pile of coal cars along the side of the right of way.

It's golden hour at CP Wabic in Decatur as westbound Triple Crown train 255 departs for Moberly and eventually, Kansas City. As much as I normally enjoy including the Wabash coal tower (just out of frame to the left), the shot seems to work better without it. But hey, that's just my opinion. Leading, of course, is SD70ACC #1841 (shocker).

The crew of Terminal Railroad job T101 waits on the Broadway side for a signal at East Grand as NS SD70ACC #1800 charges up the river side with train 223. A little surprising since 101 was ready to go well in advance of 223 after working NS Luther yard; but their ultimate destination of TRRA's Madison yard was likely not ready for the train. As it turns out, 223 ended up getting stabbed at the Willows interlocking and waited out most of the rest of the afternoon.

Norfolk Southern manifest freight 310 charges through a winter storm in North East, Pennsylvania as it heads east behind lead unit NS 1819, one of NS's SD70ACC rebuilds.

This location in Shawsville has become a favorite of mine. When all other spots have become dark and shaded at the end of the day, here on Basham Hollow Rd the sun lasts just a little while longer. You can shoot it a few different ways, but this is the best in my opinion. Here NS 201 works up Christiansburg grade with a new SD70ACC on point and a face full of late evening sun.
