Back when the Bessemer was still worthwhile. The southbound ore for North Bessemer passes by the searchlights at MD south, led by a triplet of IC SD70's.

Was I disappointed these were not the oranges? Yes.

Was I glad I shot them? Also, yes.

Nothing but SD70 MAC's with the nicest one leading.

Track speed is no problem with this empty coal train.

A trio of Union Pacific SD70 variants leads NS 24X east on Conrail's P&H freight main in Newark, NJ. They’re only a few miles away from their arrival at Croxton Yard in Jersey City.

NS southbound manifest 386 is curving under the massive Copper Creek bridge with an SD70 standard cab leader.

IC 1038 leads CN Z148 through Brantford amid a bit of afternoon sun.

This one made it through on my lunch which was certainly to my enjoyment.

72, 71 & 70 are providing the power

After completing a incredibly quick recrew at the grade crossing north of this shot, the fresh crew aboard the CN "Arch Job" takes the train the final few miles into Flat Rock yard southwest of Detriot.

L548 from East St.Louis holds just south of Centralia for permission to enter the yard.

A West bound CSX Coal empties led by an EMD SD70 MAC still sporting the earlier YN2 livery, clears Louisa, VA.

From almost a year ago, an IC SD70 and CN Dash 9 power a northbound Q199 on the Leithton Subdivision as it meets a southbound near Pratt siding. It was nice to see an IC SD70 leading a road train on this occasion, let alone a stack train.

After waiting on an inbound Rock Island Metra to cross, an interesting EMD/GE duo of IC 1020 & UP 8235 gets underway at 16th Street. This CN L53791 17 starting its journey at Kirk is enroute to Glenn Yard on the Southwest side of Chicago.

CN L536 picks up speed as it rolls up on 39th Street.

A pair of IC SD70s lead A408 past the elevator in the small community of Dorans, Illinois just north of Mattoon.

A fresh SD70 rebuild leads CSX M584-03 across the double track trestle at Whiteside, TN.

Manifest train, CHME, has a pair of newer SD70's---->> 1009 and 1019. The IC was 100% EMD and had enough juice with EMD to obtain a "variation" from their stock SD70M model. Three railroads got the SD70, IC,NS and Conrail.

Canadian National train L572 crosses the diamond over the Conrail Lincoln Secondary at Penford Junction on the former Detroit Toledo & Ironton. Two former IC SD70s lead the train back to the CN yard at Flat Rock passing under Henry Ford's famous DT&I arches.

With literally seconds to spare, the B&LE trio of IC SD70's catch the last rays of sun as they hustle over the Allegheny River bridge near North Bessemer, PA with empty ore train U70291. The crew will head north to Greenville, where they will tie down for the night, and where first shift will take over next morning.

Of all the south end chases on the former Bessemer, the bridge shot was high on the list. I'm glad it came to fruition.

70, 71 & 72 approach the BNSF interchange whilst working the 'Monett Turn' from Springdale, 6 Oct 2022

A trio of Illinois Central SD70’s hustle one gondola and 88 empty hoppers North to Conneaut Harbor to be loaded with ore.

CN Z148 glides downhill into Bayview Junction at Ham West, with an Illinois Central deathstar SD70 on the point. Check out the track diagnostic boxcar behind the power as well...now more common on CN's hotshot intermodal trains.

CN L536 takes its window across 16th Street behind another pair of IC SD70s. The apartment complex on the left sits on the former site of the Santa Fe coach yard and engine servicing facilities located at 21st Street.

A few miles south of Homewood, CN train L515 breaks off the famed "Mainline of Mid-America" to turn east on the former EJ&E at Matteson.

After getting a new crew at Hawthorne, IC #1021 leads an Iowa-bound G889 grain train past the 47.6 signal near Plato Center, one of the only IC-era signals left between Munger and Waterloo. Not too often do you get an IC leader on the old Iowa Division especially since the SD70s were assigned to the Kirk pool. A little birdie even flew over and knocked down the replacement signal for us. God was sure on our side that day.

In perfect sunlight, 2 former SD90-Mac's converted to SD70 ACus in CP 7027 and CP 7008 roll out from under the Highway 6 bridge approaching Newman Road as they head south for work at Kinnear Yard.

Montana Rail Link's Day Gas Job rolls under the Northern Pacific era cantilever at Plains, Montana with a nice looking SD70ACe & SD45 duo.

NS eastbound with an SD70 leader passes the NKP bracket signal (DA) in Arcadia, OH back in May of 2011. Good hanging with the Sham on this day.

It wasn't actually Monday morning, but Goodman's words ran through my mind nonetheless as an increasingly rare Illinois Central SD70 guided one of the hottest trains on the road -- Canadian National's Homewood, IL to Montreal, QC priority intermodal train no. 148 -- under the classic searchlights at Burlington, Ontario.

A trio of IC SD70's lead northbound empties towards Conneaut.

Old and new SD70 variants bring MLIHO 09 (Livonia, LA- Settegast Yard) down the Houston Sub through the Mesa Drive crossovers, at the far east end of Englewood Yard.

A pair of Illinois Central SD70's are in charge of CN local L572 as it heads south down the Dearborn Sub, crossing over M-39 in Allen Park, Michigan. The Dearborn Sub is home to the concrete catenary arches that were built for Ford's electrified railroad.

The Class SD70, IC 1000, is on the point of CN Manifest A40891 passing the beautifully restored 1918-built Illinois Central Depot in Mattoon, Illinois.

A tremendous sight to see on the Illinois Central's former "Mainline of Mid-America" as CN Train A40891 is led by a quartet of IC-Painted SD70s. The motors are in the dynamic notch as they encounter an approach signal at the holdout control point North of the diamond with CSX in Downtown Effingham, Illinois.

After catching it at the curve just north of Larkspur, I managed to beat it to the famous Santa Fe bridge due to the slow speed it was going. Here is BNSF 9687 leading the 124 coal train at one of the roughest parts of the grade of the Joint Line.

Where could it still be possible to shoot a trio of IC Death Stars in 2020? With the arrival of two SD70M-2s and another pair en-route to the BLE, the answer may soon be nowhere. Perhaps not a surprise to many, as it was astounding such lashups are still possible 22 years after CN acquired control of the IC in 1998. For now, the trio can still be seen rather reliably every morning departing Greenville around 0600 heading to Conneaut and back south to Kremis, where a second crew takes the ore to North Bessemer and empties back to Greenville for the night. The train is here seen at Branchton on its southbound trip. You can see how incredibly lucky we got with the sunlight, a few car lengths behind the engine it's still shaded.

West of Shaftsburg IC duo of 1033 and 1029 lead train 450 east in a short snow burst. Unlike the Chicago area solid sets of Death Stars are a very uncommon sight around here.

1224 & 9625 pass Edgerton whilst hauling an eastbound intermodal train, 10 Oct 2022

A pair of SD70's lead this Englewood, TX, to South St. Paul, MN, freight that has slowed up for the curves and diamond at Iowa Falls. The train passes over the branch the UP that runs over to Alden. The branch passes under the CN Waterloo Sub in a small tunnel like structure behind the 2nd unit. Luck would have it they ran out to Alden this Sunday, but we didn't get them coming back. The EWSS will cross the CN at Mills Tower here in about a mile, and continue onto Mason City for the next crew change point.

A rare afternoon A408 down the Chicago Sub rolls past the elevator in Buckley, Illinois.

CN L585 splits the 146.1 signals outside of Clinton, Illinois behind a single IC SD70 en route towards Gilman on what was once Illinois Central's high-speed passenger mainline between Chicago and Saint Louis.

A SD70M-2 & SD70 lead a cut of cars out of the quarry in Limestone. This is a branch off of the Herscher branch which branches off the Chicago Sub mainline in Otto. It was cool to finally see CN here, which I’ve wanted to do for years and years.
