Tenzin Gyatso - Dalai Lama

Nestled in the green Tuscan hills, precisely in Pomaia, part of the Municipality of Santa Luce, in the province of Pisa, is the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute, one of the most important centers for the study and practice of Buddhism in Europe.

The Statue of Cenresig was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in June 2014. The tallest statue in Europe of Cenresig (in Tibetan) / Avalokiteshvara (in Sanskrit), the Buddha of compassion, of which it is believed that the Dalai Lamas are the earthly manifestation .

It has a very special history: it was created by set designer Dante Ferretti for Martin Scorsese's film "Kundun"; once the shooting was finished the set was demolished, but the statue was saved, and after traveling from Morocco to Italy, arrived here, where sculptor Alessio Pazzini and his staff restored it to make it adhere to the precise iconographic canons Buddhists.

In this haven of peace monks and lay people live together, mostly volunteers and students who follow courses in philosophy, psychology and meditation, but it is open to anyone who wants to spend a period, or even just a few hours, away from the chaos of the city, surrounded by the nature, breathing good air and where instead of cell phone notifications birds are heard chirping.

The launch of a new approach to image making for me. It has a precedent in the previously posted "Strange Attractor" series from earlier in 2017.

Letting that method sit fallow for a while I thought to come at it again from a slightly different angle and focus on using some of the thousands of straight, SOOC shots that I've take over the years of various sky views captured from my balcony.

Almost all are taken during the Summer when the skies and sunsets are at their very best ( last least at this latitude and time of year ). Every single element of this image is a different shot of the sky. Even the most geometric of the geometries is done with extreme, multi-mirroring of a sky shot.

I'll be using sky shots for a while but then I'm going to push this method into other SOOC shots and Pano-Sabotage as well.

I'm dubbing this new method "X-Stream Mirroring".

Britannica

List of Bands

www.britannica.com/topic/list-of-bands-2026814

The Animals are an English rhythm and blues and rock band, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1960s. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. They were dubbed "animals" reportedly because of their wild stage act, and the name stuck.

The Animals band — formed originally as the Alan Price Combo — were one of several British rhythms and blues bands touring the United States in the early 1960s, distinguished mainly by their authenticity and the scarifying, Deltaesque lead vocals of Eric Burdon.

The same year the Beatles invaded America, the Animals were not far behind — but this five-piece of blues-rock upstarts delivered a more authentic, cerebral, white R&B than anything the Merseybeat bands were capable of. Indeed, it was a cover of a Leadbelly standard "House of the Rising Sun" that gave them their first transatlantic smash.

Formed in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England in 1962 when lead singer Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo with John Steel on drums, Bryan "Chas" Chandler on bass, and Hilton Valentine on guitar. Burdon contributes the renaming to the Animals to a group of friends the band used to hang out with, notably in honor of one of those friends, "Animal" Hogg.

Due in part to Beatlemania at the time, the band relocated to London in 1964 to join in the beat-boom takeover of the music scene there. This movement became known as the British Invasion, and the Animals landed right at the forefront of that wave of new British artists invading American culture.

"House of the Rising Sun" is by far their most popular and therefore heard most in TV and movies, whether in a cover version by a character in "Mad Men" or during karaoke in the series "Girls" or as the soundtrack to Sharon Stone's final descent into drug madness in the classic Scorsese film Casino. The track became known as one of the first folk-rock hit in the states.

My two favorite songs of theirs:

Italia, Lazio, Bracciano, Autunno 2019

Bracciano is a small town in the Italian region of Lazio, near Rome. The town is famous for its volcanic lake (Lago di Bracciano) and for a particularly well-preserved medieval castle Castello Orsini-Odescalchi. It was built in the 15th century, and combines the functions of a military defence structure and a civilian residence of the feudal lords of the period, the Orsini and Borgia, both papal families. As one of the largest and best-maintained castles in Italy, and it has hosted several high-profile weddings like the “wedding of the century” between Tyrone Power and Linda Christian in 1949 and the one between Martin Scorsese and Isabella Rossellini. Legend has it that the castle is haunted by the ghost of a De Medici duchess. Isabella dei Medici was strangled by her much older husband Paolo Giordano i Orsini after he learned that she had had a succession of lovers. The gruesome tale also holds that before she met her untimely death Isabella had a habit of punishing unsatisfactory lovers by leading them through a dark passageway and pushing them into a pit lined with spikes.

The Musée d'Orsay is a museum in Paris on the Left Bank of the Seine. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. The museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. It houses the largest collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Berthe Morisot, Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and van Gogh. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986. It is one of the largest art museums in Europe.

In 2022 the museum had 3.2 million visitors, up from 1.4 million in 2021. It was the sixth-most-visited art museum in the world in 2022, and second-most-visited art museum in France, after the Louvre. The museum has been featured in many films including Martin Scorsese’s 2011 film “Hugo”.

On 21 August 2021, the EZ 51732 from Nuremberg shunting yard to Munich North ran for once on the regular route via Ingolstadt. This summer, the mixed goods train was interesting, as DB Cargo had commissioned the Swedish company Hectorrail due to a lack of vehicles and personnel. Near Vierkirchen, I managed to take a picture of the 242.531 in front of the photogenically assembled train. By the way, the locomotive is named La Motta - a reminiscence of the boxer whose life was filmed in 1980 by Martin Scorsese under the title Raging Bull with Robert De Niro.

Carlito's Way is a 1993 American crime film directed by Brian De Palma, based on the novels Carlito's Way and After Hours by Judge Edwin Torres. The film adaptation was scripted by David Koepp. It stars Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzman, John Leguizamo, Jorge Porcel, Joseph Siravo and Viggo Mortensen.

Finished reading this book recently & it was an excellent read.

Al Pacino was being interviewed at the Director's Guild of America in Hollywood, about the new Martin Scorsese film, "The Irishman", in which Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa. I took this shot during the interview..

This statue has a very particular story: it comes from the set of the film “Kundun” by Martin Scorsese, which tells the story of the life of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama from his childhood to his exile in India. In 1996, the Oscar-winning set designer Dante Ferretti created it as part of the reconstruction of the Potala Palace and, once filming was finished, the statue remained in the Atlas Studio in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

In 1999, the artist Sonia Deotto was commissioned to design and create an artistic installation that would have served as the backdrop for the Dalai Lama’s visit to Italy to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize; decides to contact the director of the King of Morocco Film Center to borrow the statue and – to his great surprise – receives it as a gift. Thanks to a team of professionals, the transport takes place by land to Casablanca, then by sea to Genoa and finally to Milan, where the statue is placed at the center of the exhibition space of the event “Tibet – Art and Spirituality” (presented in the book of the same name by Skira Editore, Milan 1999). Subsequently, the statue of Chenrezig is kept in some warehouses and, finally, in the warehouse of a family business of Beba Stoppani, disciple of Geshe Jampa Ghiatso, while various possibilities for its appropriate placement are explored. In June 2012, the statue is donated to the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute by Sonia Deotto, also founder of the Peace Movement “OraWorldMandala”

I am really missing the surf beach so am posting this image from earlier in the year.

The waves were crashing around in all directions, both toward and away from the shore. as if they didn't know which direction home was.

The title is of course from the Bob Dylan documentary by Martin Scorsese in 2005 so I'm going to sneak this into my Dylan Challenge. I am so behind at 25 out of 100 but will keep it going into the new year, and I suspect at this pace, in the next few years to come!

LA RUGGINE AVANZA INESORABILE. RUST ADVANCES INEXORABLY.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore is a 1974 film directed by Martin Scorsese.

The title of the film is inspired by a song from the thirties and the style of the opera goes through all the ancient genres of Hollywood: comedy, musical, melos.

It was presented in competition at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival and Ellen Burstyn, for her portrayal of Alice, was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress of 1975.

Prolonged exposure to humidity and atmospheric agents causes the initiation of corrosion phenomena of ferrous products or alloys containing iron, such as steel. Iron corrosion consists of a complex electrochemical reaction, catalyzed by water and accelerated by acids and salts, in which iron combines with oxygen to form iron oxides, including reddish-brown ferric oxide Fe2O3, commonly known as rust. The rust layer is permeable to air and water, therefore, if action is not taken promptly, the metal underlying the rust layer continues to corrode, until it is completely consumed. In fact, the chemical nature of the rust layer is such that it is weakly bound to the metal from which it is generated and, by crumbling easily, leaves the underlying metal part exposed to further corrosion.

Downtown Pawhuska OK became the filming site for Martin Scorsese film "Killers of the Flower Moon" recently. Captured this shot on my Mamiya C220 medium format camera, loaded with adapted Portra 400, converted to B/W in post. Color version will be posted also.

Al Pacino was being interviewed at the Director's Guild of America in Hollywood, about the new Martin Scorsese film, "The Irishman", in which Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa. I took this shot during the interview..
