Well friends, I will be going North for a few months and will have limited contact. But every once in awhile I will check in and catch up with you.
I enjoy all of your photos and hope to contribute a few of my own over the next bit of time. I have a late August rendezvous with a Total Solar Eclipse in Idaho and then some travel through Glacier National Park.

I was just guessin' at numbers and figures
Pullin' your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
And tell me you love me, come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Runnin' in circles, chasin' our tails
Comin' back as we are

We were missing the mad scientist with the typical laboratory full of instruments. Thanks to people with this great creativity, much progress was made in the use of steam in the steampunk world.

With my favourite time of the year coming up, I decided to build a mad Scientist House that's hanging over the riverside on stilts.
Originally I hadn't planned for the house to be Halloween themed and I was going for more of a steampunkish look. Although, once I had built the pipes on the outside walls, I kinda just thought it'd make a good house for either an inventor or scientist.
The stilts were inspired by Aunt Joesphine's House in A Series of Unfortunate Events, I also took inspiration from the houses in Lake-Town from the Hobbit.
Thanks for looking and Happy Halloween!
#122/365 A quick snapshot I took when I got home from work tonight. I saw these glasses at the 99cents store and had to get them. I don't know what it is about making your kid look like a dork that is so adorable. Here he is, the mad scientist aka Professor Whinger. I really went nuts with the post process..just trying different things, so I know this might be too soft for some. Have a great weekend.
Strobist: Ugly kitchen fluorescent lights.
I've been busy the last few weeks (work) and I haven't had much time for photos. Apparently while I've been frantically working, my minifigs decided to build an active volcano on my kitchen table :-) Last night I found the new female Volcano Scientist photographing the lava. I hope they clean up the mess :-)
I'm trying to get back into the swing of taking pictures especially since the Olympics are starting today :-)

Still on series 11 today with the scentist. The regular kind, not the mad kind. This one is mostly based on my memories from the lab in school, as I went on to study IT after that and stopped fiddling with microscopes and other typical science lab equipment. Although a part of me still wants to have my own lab where I can conduct crazy science experiments ...
My favourite part of this one is the microscope. Really wanted to create one that resembled a real microscope as much as possible, which is really hard when you still want it to be small enough to work with minifigs!
I had intended to put a petri dish in the form of an upside down trans clear round tile under the microscope, but I forgot to when taking the picture. Ah well.

Today's world is full of things to be afraid of. We have 24-hour news cycles hellbent on telling us of all of the scary things going on in the world. I think in a lot of cases we are paralyzed from actually experiencing life on the off chance something 'bad' may happen. The thing is, by living in this fear we miss out on all the good things that absolutely will happen too.
There comes a time in everyone's life when you have to stop observing what is happing around you and decide to be an active participant in the life experiment. Reach out and touch it.

NASA scientists have found evidence that Mars’ crust is not as dense as previously thought, a clue that could help researchers better understand the Red Planet’s interior structure and evolution.
A new map of the thickness of Mars’ crust shows less variation between thicker regions (red) and thinner regions (blue), compared to earlier mapping. Read more: go.nasa.gov/2f7bxiw

Mr. Rock Squirrel is a Mad Scientist in Golden Valley Az. who plays around with chemistry, in his underground Laboratory and wants to help solve all the Worlds problems.
Rock squirrels dig burrows with their sharp claws and muscular legs. The burrows provide shelter, safety, living space, and food storage. Burrow systems can be complex and lengthy, as they are enlarged over a period of years. Entrances are usually hidden beneath rocks and can be larger than 3 inches in width. Wikipedia
What a legend. Among so many significant people, Westminster Abbey in London is the final resting place of the eminent scientist Stephen Hawking. The equation expresses his idea that black holes in the universe are not entirely black but emit a glow, that would become known as Hawking radiation.

I could speak about this couple for a very long time. When we first met, I scared them with my wild music. Nevertheless, Mikhailich invited me to play at the big scientific celebration and to be a guest at his birthday. I from my side invited them both at my funeral: “It will be fun!”. Invitations have been mutually accepted. Mikhailich wanted me to spend the night on the regime object, where we drank and played and the head of which he is. He had heated debates about this with his wife Anna Vyacheslavovna (she drank with us as well, and the guard of that site, which is the big friend of Mikhailich and big fan of music, and one very good classical guitarist, and Yulia Ganja, of course (see about her at this album and previous post)). I decided that I’ll better stay in the tent at the forest. The day after Mikhailich didn’t wanted to call home: “What if she died?”. Fortunately, Anna Vyacheslavovna wasn’t. When Mikhailich and Yulia saw me off, I brought him my deepest apologies for my music. They were accepted, and after treating me and Yulia coffee and ice cream at the cafe he proposed to drink Horseradish moonshine on a bench (Obninsk is science city, town of the peaceful atom, high radioactivity, you know...). But there were kids. So, he decided that we’ll better go at his place. What we did. That way I had a chance to apologize to Anna Vyacheslavovna as well. The evening with the moonshine had been long and instructive. I should write a novel to retell all that was said at this event to you, so I’ll rather wouldn’t try. But you could imagine that evening, one of the warmest in my life…

– Why have I chosen RSS Korolev? Every captain wants such ship. Fast. Huge. Convenient. Never mind, I m just joking. Someone else would say something about a new frontier and a spirit of discovery. As for me, it s just a new experience. You know, if you are captain, it s almost impossible to find anything except cargo ship. Or a liner for the lucky ones. It s not bad, but those routine delivery missions are too identical. Fly somewhere, take cargo, go back, repeat. This research voyage is completely different. Much more responsibility. There are larger cargo ships, but the crew is always low, a couple of dozens at the biggest ones. And all of them are captain s subordinates. Captain is a god on his ship. Here… everything is different. Hundreds of scientists are not just passengers. I have to change course if some astronomer finds some unusual star or if a biologist decides to scan particular planet for life. It s a bit annoying. Some more conservative person could find such situation real headache. But I don t want to return to the freighters.
– They can say everything they want, but NavSystems was a general sponsor of this mission. So our aim is establishing new hyperspace routes and correcting old ones. Most expansive and complicated equipment of this ship are all kinds of hyperspace scanners. Laying a new route isn t a simple task. You have to keep in mind many factors to make it fast, reliable, safe, economic. And profitable for company. Days, when ship had to have huge powerful expansive computer onboard to calculate hyperjump, are gone. Companies like NavSystem provide access to their servers to make calculations as simple as it possible. Global hyperspace beacon network collects all necessary data; servers process it and give all parameters of a jump for a fair payment. This entire infrastructure has high running cost, so we can t do it for free.
– Those bastards from the “navigators guild” think they are masters here. But most of them don t even understand that their precious hyperroutes are useless if nobody wants to use them. Every journey needs a reason. The most common and obvious one is valuable resource deposit. Humanity needs more resources for further expansion. That s why we should check every possible planet, moon or asteroid belt. Moreover, every planet is unique and can tell scientists something new and may be important. We ve already done several discoveries. But “navigators” always hurry us up if they find star system useless for them. We must do something.
– This expedition has already given us good results. We collected tons of information and statistics. It will help for new colonists a lot. Some people hope we can find one more earth-like planet. It will be a great success. However, we checked thousands of planets and none of them is suitable for human without any special equipment. We even found some samples of life, but it were just bacteria and a couple of simplest seaweeds. Space is a dead place. I hope we can change this in future.

The Kamnik–Savinja Alps (Slovene: Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe) are a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps. They lie in northern Slovenia, except for the northernmost part, which lies in Austria.
The western part of the range was named the Kamnik Alps (German: Steiner Alpen) in 1778 by the scientists Belsazar Hacquet and Franz Xaver von Wulfen, after the town of Kamnik (Stein) in the valley of the Kamnik Bistrica River. Its eastern part was named the Savinja Alps (Sanntaler Alpen) or Solčava Alps (Sulzbacher Alpen) by the mountaineer Johannes von Frischauf in 1875, after the settlement of Solčava (Sulzbach) and the main river, the upper Savinja (Sann).
Geography
The Kamnik–Savinja Alps are located south of the Karawanks range at the border of Austria and Slovenia, stretching from the Sava River in the west to the Savinja in the east, where the adjacent Slovenian Prealps with the Pohorje range, the Celje Hills at the Dravinja River, as well as the Sava Hills are located. In the northwest, the valley of Vellach Creek (at 46°22′21″N 14°33′55″E) leading to Bad Vellach is the southernmost point of both the Austrian state of Carinthia and Austria as a whole.
The entire main chain is today part of Slovenia. Historically it formed the border between the Inner Austrian duchies of Carinthia, Styria, and Carniola. The tripoint was located at the Carinthia Mount Rinka (Slovene: Koroška Rinka).
There is also a small glacier below Mount Skuta, which is the easternmost glacier in the Southern Alps.
Mountains and passes
The most important peaks are:
Grintovec – 2,558 m (8,392 ft)
Kočna – 2,540 m (8,333 ft)
Skuta – 2,532 m (8,307 ft)
Carinthia Mount Rinka – 2,433 m (7,982 ft)
Planjava – 2,394 m (7,854 ft)
Ojstrica – 2,350 m (7,710 ft)
Brana – 2,253 m (7,392 ft)
Kalce Ridge – 2,224 m (7,297 ft)
Cold Mountain – 2,203 m (7,228 ft)
Storžič – 2,132 m (6,995 ft)
Krofička – 2,083 m (6,834 ft)
In total, 28 peaks surpass 2,000 m. The total area of the Slovene part is about 900 km2. About three-quarters of the area is covered with forest, and many of the higher peaks are bleak and rocky.
The most important passes are the Seebergsattel (Slovene: Jezersko sedlo) between Austrian Carinthia and Slovenia's Municipality of Jezersko, as well as the Pavlič Pass. On the Slovenian side, there is a skiing area, whereas tourism in the Vellach Valley focuses on health spas.

Ojstrica (2,350 meters or 7,710 feet) is a mountain in the eastern part of the Kamnik Alps with a pyramid-shaped top that is visible from far away. The name Ojstrica derives from the Slovene word oster 'sharp'. There is a 600-meter (2,000 ft) high wall on its northern side to the bottom of the Logar Valley. The eastern side, down to the Roban Cirque (Slovene: Robanov kot), also has a high wall. There are several climbing routes.
Starting points
Kamnik, Kamniška Bistrica (601 meters or 1,972 feet)
Solčava, Logar Valley (761 meters or 2,497 feet)
Solčava, Roban Cirque (c. 700 meters or 2,300 feet)
Routes
1½h: from Kocbek Lodge at Korošica (1,808 meters or 5,932 feet), on the southern side
1½h: from Kocbek Lodge at Korošica (1,808 meters or 5,932 feet), on the eastern side
4h: from Kamnik Saddle Lodge (1,864 meters or 6,115 feet), below Planjava via Škarje

Horsefly bites are painful. Some people develop serious allergies to horsefly bites, but this is rare. Avoiding horseflies can be difficult outdoors in summer.
Horseflies are a flying insect found most in rural, farmland areas, where they feed on large mammals.
Scientists call horseflies blood-feeding arthropods. The scientific name for their family of species is Tabanus.
Horseflies must bite large animals - including horses, cattle, dogs, and humans - as part of their lifecycle.
Only female horseflies bite. Male horseflies do not have the mouthparts that females use to bite animals. Females do this to drink the blood that they need to produce their eggs.
Female horseflies need a large amount of blood for reproduction - up to 0.5 milliliters. Scientists estimate that they can take up as much as 200 milligrams of blood in a few minutes.
Compared with other insect bites, horsefly bites are particularly painful and slow to heal. This is because of the way the flies bite.
The bite from a horsefly:
Is a cut type of wound, rather than a small puncture hole
The mouthparts of the horsefly use a scissor-like action to create a wound in our skin
The fly "mops up" the bleed after cutting through the skin
The fly anchors to the skin while drinking the blood, with the help of small hooks along its mouthparts

The Scientist from the Arctic Base Camp posed for a quick portrait yesterday. I really like this minifig and the printing on his torso. I just wish I could fix the decal on the TV in the background. I tried 5 times to get that decal straight before I just gave up... oh well....
Or "Kromsnavelooievaar", like its discoverer, netherlands famous natural scientist Erasmus Class van der Ailer (1623-1666), called this meanwhile extincted species. CBS was 3x bigger as storks are today. In van der Ailer's time people thought, CBS's curved bill was a result from carrying the new born babies near to their cradle! Today we're much more smarter about this misinterpretation, 'cause babies haven't enough weight for that... ;)
