On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! On Thursday, December 7, 2016, the fourth graders went on an exciting and fun field trip to Ultimate Goal in Marcellus. The purpose of the field trip was to promote teamwork and positive interactions between students. The bonus was that it was just plain fun! Students played team sports like soccer and dodge ball. They also got to enjoy lunch all together with their teachers before heading back to school. Other patrons at Ultimate Goal were impressed with how well our students played together. They also loved our uniforms. The entire fourth grade enjoyed this field trip very much and came to school refreshed and ready to continue their hard work.

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.

#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.

This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 the 7th grade students of the SAS Middle School went on a field trip to 5 Wits in Destiny USA. Students participated in three of the team building adventures the store had to offer. The Drago's Castle was navigated with some magical help from a fairy princess. The evil Cabal was defeated in the Espionage Adventure. The 7th graders confronted the evil Pharaoh in the Tomb Adventure. Students even explored the perils of Deep Space! The trip was capped with some lunch in the food court with friends and teachers!

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”

The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

On September 8th, the Elementary school welcomed all parents for Back to School Night. Parents were able to meet the teachers of their children, as well as visit their classrooms. On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, #SASAtoms and their families enjoyed a Luau themed Reading Night. Activities included: writing sight words in sand, Palm Tree letter sounds, reading by the pool, a board game, crafts, and a fun photo booth. Students enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt. Parents were able to learn about the importance of reading over the summer as well. Did you know your child can lose 22% (approx. 2 levels) of their reading level if they don't read over the summer?! During our field trip to Tim’s Pumpkin Patch, the students were able to explore many things. Although cold and rainy, the students were able to enjoy several activities the

park had to offer. We saw farm animals, including chickens, pigs, and sheep. The students saw several varieties of pumpkins, such as gourds and white pumpkins; they were

amazed that there could be so many different types of pumpkins. Next, the students took turns going through the small hay maze, followed by the whole group going through the

farm’s larger corn maze. This was quite the experience, as we seemed to have been lost for a while, but the students were encouraging not only each other, but the adults as well, that we can find the way out! After finally finding the end to the corn maze, the students were able to pick out their own pumpkin which they were able to bring home. Due to the weather, we had to cut the trip short, but the farm sent us back with cider and donuts, which the students enjoyed while we again discussed the life cycle of a

pumpkin!

On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!

On Friday, March 9, 2018, after celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday in a week-long Read Across America event, students who participated in a reading challenge at SAS Elementary School were recognized and rewarded with certificates and medals at an assembly. Throughout the week of February 26, 2018, SASCS Elementary School celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday. Students were very creative with their silly socks, wacky-hair day and funny-hat day. Older students performed a reader's theater for first-grade classes. Many classrooms celebrated reading Dr. Seuss books, and students competed in a reading challenge by logging all the pages they read over Winter Break. What a great way to promote reading and creativity at school!

On Thursday, May 24, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School held its April Student of the Month ceremony. Students were awarded certificates for their hard work in their core classes as well as special presentations for specials. We recognized and awarded students who have the best coping skills in the face of adversity. On Friday, October 19, 2018, sixth grade #SASAtoms went on a field trip to Howe Caverns. #SASCS students spent their time learning about how the cave system formed millions of years ago, how it was rediscovered, and how it got to be what it is today. The trip included a 90 minute guided tour of the underground cave system and a boat ride. To leave the cave system, #SASAtoms had to traverse through the Winding Way. Both students and staff had a great time on this underground adventure.

On August 24th, 2017, bridging school and home life, Syracuse Academy of Science schools recently hosted grade-specific orientation for parents, guardians and families of new and returning students. During the informative sessions, discussions were held on the following subjects: the student handbook, parking regulations, student drop-off/pick-up procedures, attendance, uniforms and academic standards. The meet-and-greet format enabled parents to get to know school staff and address any concerns or questions as the new school year gets underway.

At the onset of the recent 2nd Annual Jazz Festival, SAS students put on a show of their own. They eagerly displayed some of the mechanical-engineering skills acquired through school courses and clubs centered on STEM and robotics education. Guests at the event had the opportunity to meet students who built their own robots and enthusiastically explained how they function. The fundraiser was a special evening of great food and great music, with dinner by Carrabbas Italian Grill and jazz by world-renowned bass guitarist Gerald Veasley, accompanied by several local musical artists, including vocalist Danielle Evans, saxophonist Malik Clanton, keyboard player Daniel Pugh and drummer Jose Varona. The SAS high school band led the musical portion of the event, with Believer by Imagine Dragons, arranged by Kelly and Carlson, under the direction of music teacher Ms. Lexi Carlson. We thank everyone who made this special event possible—sponsors, parents, students and staff—and we look forward to next year’s event!

On Friday, November 18th, 2016, eight #SASCS Middle school girls with Ms. Knapp, who is 6th & 7th grade science teacher, attended "Girls in the STEM Workplace" conference at SRC, Inc. which opened its doors to student and teachers so they can meet STEM professionals and witness STEM in action. These events included a tour of SRC's state-of-the-art facilities, games and activities to introduce new concepts, one-on-one time with engineers and scientists, lunch, and more. Students also learned what work feels like in a professional environment.

This was a special opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in CNY through those practicing those disciplines.

On Thursday, September 27, 2018, the #SASCS Elementary school held its Olweus kick-off. Students have been learning about our Olweus program which is a school-wide anti-bullying initiative. Students participated in grade-level team building activities, had their faces painted, and even shared their silly side with the props at the photo booth. #SASAtoms signed the Olweus Pledge which will be hanging in our hallway for students to have a daily reminder to be respectful, prepared, safe, ready and responsible.

On Saturday, September 24th, 2016, all three SAS buildings came together in the high school parking lot for a benefit to help two of our amazing families. The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

We would like to thank those who donated items, money, and gift cards. We also would like to thank those who volunteered and helped before, during, and after the event. We would not be able to make this day happen without your help.

SAS Robotics Team attended the CNY Build 'Em and Bust 'Em bridge building competition at the MOST museum on Saturday, November 11. We went to the competition with 7 teams which consist of 14 students.

On Friday, September 8th, 2017, in honor of National Grandparents’ Day, students at SASCS elementary school celebrate the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren at “Granola Bars with Grandparents Day”. Students greet loved ones with open arms and lots of smiles, then spend time drawing pictures of them while engaging in uplifting conversations. The special occasion provides an important opportunity for students to gain greater awareness of the vital strength, love and guidance older adults in their lives can offer and enjoy giving. It also encourages people of all ages to work together to foster greater communication from one generation to another.

On Friday, September 9, 2016, the SAS Middle School observed the 9/11 remembrance. Students in the classroom heard narratives from each of the classroom teachers. As an entire school, students and teachers created a red, white, and blue star in our gymnasium. We heard some words from Mr. Carter about what this day means to our nation, conducted our Pledge of Allegiance, and had a moment of silence to pay respect to this event.

On August 24th, 2017, bridging school and home life, Syracuse Academy of Science schools recently hosted grade-specific orientation for parents, guardians and families of new and returning students. During the informative sessions, discussions were held on the following subjects: the student handbook, parking regulations, student drop-off/pick-up procedures, attendance, uniforms and academic standards. The meet-and-greet format enabled parents to get to know school staff and address any concerns or questions as the new school year gets underway.

On Thursday, June 16th, 2016 one-hundred students and staff from the SAS Middle School went to Anthony Santoro Park for the year ending Field Day event. Students participated in a variety of events and activities including basketball, dodge ball, and soccer. Picnic lunch was provided to all students with ice cream and cookie treats to cap of the meal. This was a wonderful event to finish off the school year. Thank you to all staff and parents to helped to make this possible.
