On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, SAS Middle School 7th graders visited the Rochester Institute of Technology RIT). On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School celebrated it's twelfth annual commencement at the Crouse Hinds Theatre Civic Center in Syracuse, New York. The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams. On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Saturday, September 24th, 2016, all three SAS buildings came together in the high school parking lot for a benefit to help two of our amazing families. The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, #SASAtoms and their families enjoyed a Luau themed Reading Night. Activities included: writing sight words in sand, Palm Tree letter sounds, reading by the pool, a board game, crafts, and a fun photo booth. Students enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt. Parents were able to learn about the importance of reading over the summer as well. Did you know your child can lose 22% (approx. 2 levels) of their reading level if they don't read over the summer?! On Wednesday, December 14th, 2016 the 6th grade students of the SAS Middle School went on a field trip to 5 Wits in Destiny USA. Students participated in three of the team building adventures the store had to offer. The Drago's Castle was navigated with some magical help from a fairy princess. The evil Cabal was defeated in the Espionage Adventure. The 6th graders confronted the evil Pharaoh in the Tomb Adventure. Students even explored the perils of Deep Space! The trip was capped with some lunch in the food court with friends and teachers!

On Friday, September 16th, 2016, Miss Bittel and Miss Orioli's Student Leadership Club hosted their first Teen Center Night at the SAS Middle School from 5:30PM-7:00PM. Teen Center Night is an event for students to be able to come and hangout in a safe environment while doing interactive activities with their peers. Students were able to rotate from a wide variety of activities including, karaoke, basketball, coloring, watching a movie and playing video games. Pizza and drinks were provided! Students leadership uses Teen Center Night as a way to raise money for other events throughout the school year! Friday's event was hosted to raise money for our SAS family who lost their home to a house fire in August! Fun was had by all!

Ms. Boyle spoke with our students about the importance of voting, and letting your voice be heard. She followed up their conversation with the wonderful story, "Duck For President." #SASAtoms asked her questions about how she got into politics, and how voting works. Thank you Ms. Boyle for your visit and insight! We loved having you!

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

On Tuesday, October 30, The #SASCS Elementary October Student of the Month Ceremony awarded students for their trustworthiness. The students who received this award are honest and lead by example every day in their classrooms.

Our ceremony included dress down passes for students who received the most DOJO's and a fun PBIS game where a student from each kindergarten class dug through a spooky bucket of spaghetti to try and extract as many plastic eyeballs out as they could in 10 seconds. All three kindergarten classes were winners in this game, and earned a dress down pass for their whole class!

Terra Science and Education also joined us for our ceremony and handed out scholarships to our now 4th-grade students who performed at a level 3 or 4 on their New York State assessment. Great job, #SASAtoms!

On Tuesday October 10th, 2017, SAS Kindergarteners in Room K-A, with their teachers Mrs. Garza and Mr. Skemaker, talk about the importance of kindness with Mr. Alamin Muhammad, founder of We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving the homeless in Syracuse. Putting concern for others into action, the children made bagged lunches for the homeless that included turkey sandwiches and paper hearts made by hand. Lunches are distributed each Saturday, and this batch is made with extra special care and attention.

On Thursday, September 8th, 2016, the students at the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School participated in our Olweus Anti-Bullying Kickoff. This research based program is intended to bring bullying out of the shadows and make it part of a central conversation to improve awareness. Classrooms circulated between three areas, classroom, the cafeteria for a guest speaker, and the gym. First, students participated in a classroom meeting with a team building activity that they roleplayed various situations that were designed to get students to move from being a bullying bystander to helping address and prevent it. In addition, students participated in a t-shirt design contest as they drew logos with anti-bullying messages. Lastly, Students participated in team building activities around the gym designed to build skills in communication, problem solving, and listening. Secondly, we had guest speakers, Jami Ryan and Maureen Foran-Mocete, and their team from the Child Advocacy Center, who presented to each grade level at Syracuse Academy Middle School. Their presentation focused on bullying prevention and how to turn bystanders into upstanders. The scholars were engaged and participated in answering and asking questions. Lastly, grade levels enjoyed different activities in the gym. The first activity focused on communication. Students worked in pairs to give verbal directions to a partner as they draw a simple image. The entire group shared their image to see which pair was able to communicate and recreate the image closest to the actual picture. The following three activities focused on trust, communication, and listening skills. Students work in pairs to guide their partner through a "mine field" while they are blind folded. Students had to get to the other side without hitting any of the items. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blind folded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate" as they stepped on "marshmallows". The last station was a photo booth where students formed many group poses with props to help send a "No Bullying" message. Students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs

On Friday, March 31st, 2017, the SAS Middle School held an award ceremony for the 3rd quarter marking period. This event recognizes the efforts of our amazing students over the last ten weeks. Students were recognized for awards that included Honor & High Honor Roll, Best Citizen, Best Academic, and Student of the Month. Attendees enjoyed a special performance from the Step Team led by Ms. Jones. The event concluded with the presentation of the awards for the Middle School Science Fair and special recognition of students who received awards at the CNY Science and Engineering Fair. We are very proud to recognize the amazing work of our young ATOMS!

Starting on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017, the 5th and 6th grade students of the Syracuse Academy of Science had the opportunity of traveling to the Everson Museum of Art, located in downtown Syracuse. The Everson is home to approximately 11,000 works of art such as paintings, sculptures, drawings, videos, graphics, and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation. The students were broken up into small groups and each group had a docent that took them on a tour of the museum, explaining the artwork and history of each piece Our SAS atoms made us very proud with their knowledge of art, their kindness, and ambition to learn.

On Friday, April 20, 2018, #SAS high school students kicked off spring break with a talent show and student olympics.

On Friday, November 18th, 2016, eight #SASCS Middle school girls with Ms. Knapp, who is 6th & 7th grade science teacher, attended "Girls in the STEM Workplace" conference at SRC, Inc. which opened its doors to student and teachers so they can meet STEM professionals and witness STEM in action. These events included a tour of SRC's state-of-the-art facilities, games and activities to introduce new concepts, one-on-one time with engineers and scientists, lunch, and more. Students also learned what work feels like in a professional environment.

This was a special opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in CNY through those practicing those disciplines.

On Thursday, December 7, 2016, the fourth graders went on an exciting and fun field trip to Ultimate Goal in Marcellus. The purpose of the field trip was to promote teamwork and positive interactions between students. The bonus was that it was just plain fun! Students played team sports like soccer and dodge ball. They also got to enjoy lunch all together with their teachers before heading back to school. Other patrons at Ultimate Goal were impressed with how well our students played together. They also loved our uniforms. The entire fourth grade enjoyed this field trip very much and came to school refreshed and ready to continue their hard work.

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”

The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

On Wednesday, October 31, 2018, our #SASAtoms celebrated Fall in style. Our #SASCS classrooms were filled with laughter and treats, followed by a costume parade to spooky music around the school for their parents. If students didn't want to participate in the parade, they enjoyed an afternoon of fun in the gym with Mr. Albert! Some classes got a special visit and guest reading from Ms. Georgiadis who dressed as Camilla Cream from the book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 the 7th grade students of the SAS Middle School went on a field trip to 5 Wits in Destiny USA. Students participated in three of the team building adventures the store had to offer. The Drago's Castle was navigated with some magical help from a fairy princess. The evil Cabal was defeated in the Espionage Adventure. The 7th graders confronted the evil Pharaoh in the Tomb Adventure. Students even explored the perils of Deep Space! The trip was capped with some lunch in the food court with friends and teachers!

On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. This visit is one among many that are part of our continual commitment to prepare our students for college education. Go ATOMS! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Friday, December 23rd, 2016 the SAS Middle School held its 3rd Annual Staff vs. Students Basketball Game. Students from the 6th and 7th grade pitted their youth and speed against the size and experience of the staff members. Although the staff members would prove victorious, the game was fun for all participants and spectators. Student Co-MVP's were named as Alexius Pierce and Zachary Allen. Staff Co-MVP's were named as Mr. Frisina and Mr. McGriff. This annual event is a crowd favorite and is a great way to kick off the holiday vacation! Have a safe holiday season Atoms! On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!

On Thursday, November 9th, 2017, SAS high school is proud of all its students and the hard work they apply. Students received awards marking their academic achievements during the first marking period this year. Students were called up by grade level to receive thier certificates of achievement. Students were awarded for honor roll & high honor roll.

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School assembled as a community to celebrate student achievement. #SASAtoms were honored for the following; Demonstrating Citizenship, Most Improved, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, Student of the Month, Best Academic and our Golden Atom.

We are proud of each of our #SASAtoms and love celebrating their achievements. Together, we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School celebrated it's twelfth annual commencement at the Crouse Hinds Theatre Civic Center in Syracuse, New York. The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams.
