On Friday, April 20, 2018, #SAS high school students kicked off spring break with a talent show and student olympics.
On Friday, September 8th, 2017, in honor of National Grandparents’ Day, students at SASCS elementary school celebrate the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren at “Granola Bars with Grandparents Day”. Students greet loved ones with open arms and lots of smiles, then spend time drawing pictures of them while engaging in uplifting conversations. The special occasion provides an important opportunity for students to gain greater awareness of the vital strength, love and guidance older adults in their lives can offer and enjoy giving. It also encourages people of all ages to work together to foster greater communication from one generation to another.

On Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 the SAS middle school students held their monthly anti-bully classroom meeting with their 6th period teachers. The topic of the meeting was respect. They discussed ways that they could show respect both in person and online, how important it is to treat others with respect and talks about how respect and preventing bullying are connected. The idea was for them to have a better understanding how they can show respect in all facets of their lives. These meetings are a part of our continual effort to bring bullying out of the shadows in order to promote a safe, comfortable environment for all of our students.

From August 1st to the 5th, 2016 students from SAS enjoyed the SUNY ESF Science Camp. The "Science" stands for Summer Camps Investigating Ecology in Neighborhood and City Environments, Students enjoyed a variety of activities in our city's environment. They took water samples testing for various factors including insect levels and pollutants. Students explored the lake at the Clark Reservation State Park. Samples of the fish popluation were taken at Onondaga Lake Park. The amazing activities concluded at the SUNY ESF campus with solar powered cars to demonstrate the renewable resource that we all need to embrace! Thank you to the counselors for providing our students with a great experience! We will see you next year!

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.
It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.
It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.
“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”
The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.
“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”
Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.
“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”
The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.
“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”
Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.
Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.
“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”
The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

Students were awarded certificates for their hard work in their core classes as well as special presentations for specials. We recognized and awarded students who have the best coping skills in the face of adversity. The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams. On Thursday, October 13th, 2016 the elementary school held its first PBIS event. Teachers chose an activity to administer and students in all grade levels signed up for the activity of their choice. Students chose from a range of activities such as a movie with popcorn, yoga, finger knitting, art projects, Legos, and so much more. The day was full of laughs and fun activities as a reward for students' hard work and dedication so far this year at SAS Elementary.

On Tuesday, November 8th 2016, 6th grade students from the SAS Middle School visited Howe Caverns. This amazing landmark, first discovered by Farmer Lester Howe, has regularly been the second most visited landmark in New York State. Students traveled over 150 feet undergroud to see the amazing limestone formations that have developed over the last two centuries. They were amazed by the many sights as they were directed by the great guides who accompanied all of the student groups. The trip was capped off by a stop to the Cavern Museum and Gift Shop! This great trip was enjoyed by all!

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Friday, November 18th, 2016, eight #SASCS Middle school girls with Ms. Knapp, who is 6th & 7th grade science teacher, attended "Girls in the STEM Workplace" conference at SRC, Inc. which opened its doors to student and teachers so they can meet STEM professionals and witness STEM in action. These events included a tour of SRC's state-of-the-art facilities, games and activities to introduce new concepts, one-on-one time with engineers and scientists, lunch, and more. Students also learned what work feels like in a professional environment.
This was a special opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in CNY through those practicing those disciplines.

From June 27th to July 8th, 2016 the SAS Middle School held the Summer STEM Camp. Students enjoyed a variety of activities in this three week adventure. Financial literacy subjects such as budgeting, tax withholding, and the stock markets were experienced through various computer simulations. Computer coding projects included adventure games created by our wonderful students. Engineering projects included the construction of water rockets and water balloon launchers. Students finished the experience by utilizing green screen technology to record their own videos in OUTER SPACE! The first year of the camp included many great experiences and time to build better experiences for next year!

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the #SASCS Middle School assembled as a community to celebrate student achievement. #SASAtoms were honored for the following; Demonstrating Citizenship, Most Improved, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll, Student of the Month, Best Academic and our Golden Atom.

On Friday, September 9, 2016, the SAS Middle School observed the 9/11 remembrance. Students in the classroom heard narratives from each of the classroom teachers. As an entire school, students and teachers created a red, white, and blue star in our gymnasium. We heard some words from Mr. Carter about what this day means to our nation, conducted our Pledge of Allegiance, and had a moment of silence to pay respect to this event.

On Thursday, June 16th, 2016 one-hundred students and staff from the SAS Middle School went to Anthony Santoro Park for the year ending Field Day event. Students participated in a variety of events and activities including basketball, dodge ball, and soccer. Picnic lunch was provided to all students with ice cream and cookie treats to cap of the meal. This was a wonderful event to finish off the school year. Thank you to all staff and parents to helped to make this possible.

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.
#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.
This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, #SASAtoms and their families enjoyed a Luau themed Reading Night. Activities included: writing sight words in sand, Palm Tree letter sounds, reading by the pool, a board game, crafts, and a fun photo booth. Students enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt. Parents were able to learn about the importance of reading over the summer as well. Did you know your child can lose 22% (approx. 2 levels) of their reading level if they don't read over the summer?! On Tuesday, November 22, 2016 students in Miss Bittel's 6th grade social studies classes were treated to a Cuban foods presentation by Odalis Gaskins, one of our 6th grader's mother. Students got the opportunity to watch video clips of Odalis preparing and cooling the foods in her kitchen and then students were able to sample the foods in class. Students were presented with Congris which has rice, black beans, salt and olive oil along with garlic, onion and green peppers, Chicken Stew which had chicken legs, olive oil, tomato paste, salt, garlic, onions and peppers, Ripe Plantain and garden salad with tomato. Students enjoyed every bite!

On Wednesday September 6th, Smiling students and eager parents meet enthusiastic teachers for the first time as the beginning of innovative education gets underway at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Charter School (SASCCS). On Wednesday, February 8th, 2017 the Middle School held its 7th grade Merit Breakfast. Students who have exceeded positive 20 total score were invited to enjoy the meal as a thank you from administration and staff for their positive choices. Students enjoyed scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, hash browns, and bagels. Staff members were on hand to sit and enjoy the event with our students. Our goal at SAS is to help create wonderful, well-rounded young adults and events such as these are to celebrate the positive choices of the students who attended. Keep up the great work ATOMS!

On Tuesday, June 12, 2018, select elementary #SASAtoms presented their original poems to all elementary students, teachers, and families at the 2018 Poetry Slam. Students focused on different types of figurative language and poetry including; simile, alliteration, and haikus. Our Atoms works contained unique and thoughtful imagery. Go Atoms! #SASAtoms #SASCS
On Tuesday, October 16, 2018, second grade #SASAtoms enjoyed a fun-filled day at Golub's Pumpkin Farm. Our #SASCS Scholars learned the responsibilities of running a farm while visiting with the animals and enjoying the pumpkin patch. As a special surprise Golubs had a physics demonstration of using stored energy to launch a projectile without the use of an explosive... ahem, also known as catapulting a pumpkin across the field for us. On Saturday, September 24th, 2016, all three SAS buildings came together in the high school parking lot for a benefit to help two of our amazing families. The De La Cruz and Bonilla families were victims of a house fire weeks before that claimed most of their possessions. This team effort created a great event that involved a car wash, barbecue, bounce house, bake sale, and more! SAS families from all three buildings helped out and participated in the festivities. An event such as this represents the best qualities of the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students, parent, teachers, and administrators who are here for one common goal, the success of our students and families!
We would like to thank those who donated items, money, and gift cards. We also would like to thank those who volunteered and helped before, during, and after the event. We would not be able to make this day happen without your help.

On Thursday, June 9th, several 5th graders visited the Everson Museum of Art. The Everson Museum of Art features the works of artists from the 18th century to the present, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, and video.
The students were split into small groups and guided throughout several exhibitions. They thoroughly enjoyed the performance art where videos were shown of artists stomping on pottery full of paint, artists trying to climb while wearing roller-skates, and artists throwing globs of messy clay. Another installation that caught their attention exhibited sculptures created using found objects that were crocheted, stitched, stuffed, carved, constructed with yarn, mattress stuffing, fabric, twine, styrofoam, wood, and clay.
The docents that conducted the tours were wonderful and very pleased with the knowledge our 5th graders brought to the conversations and critiques. The students spoke with elegance and confidence when critiquing the works of art which made for a beautiful atmosphere.
I was extremely proud of the students for how engaged they were with the artwork, the conversations, and how they represented the Syracuse Academy of Science wonderfully. We eagerly look forward to visiting the Everson Museum of Art again in the future.

On Wednesday, January 10th, 2017, the elementary school held a workshop for each grade level during Specials time in the gymnasium. The workshop was a multi-sensory lesson on African culture through dance, drum music and stories. Students especially enjoyed the hands-on learning of drumming techniques and dance and their importance in African culture.

On Monday October 17th and Tuesday, October 18th, the 2nd graders visited Golub's Pumpkin Farm in Manlius, NY. While visiting, the students pet many farm animals, as well as rode on a horse. After picking pumpkins, the students watched Mr. Golub launch a pumpkin with a catapult! They ended the trip by going through their bat shaped corn maze.

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS

On Monday, March 5, 2018, students in the middle school participated in Read Across America to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ (belated) birthday! ELA classes began the day with a read aloud of The Lorax, discussion on the environment, and time to drop everything and read!
In the afternoon, students in each grade rotated among three different stations related to four Dr. Seuss books: Horton Hatches the Egg, The Cat in the Hat, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and The Lorax. The stations included more reading and writing, STEM activities, and a video with activities about The Lorax. Students left for the day with a “truffula tree seed” in hand and a quote in their minds.

On Thursday, October 13th, 2016 the elementary school held its first PBIS event. Teachers chose an activity to administer and students in all grade levels signed up for the activity of their choice. Students chose from a range of activities such as a movie with popcorn, yoga, finger knitting, art projects, Legos, and so much more. The day was full of laughs and fun activities as a reward for students' hard work and dedication so far this year at SAS Elementary.

On Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, SAS 7th grade students attended 5 W!ts as a field trip to Destiny Mall. The students took part in live action adventures where they had to work together as a team in order to be successful. The students participated in a total of 3 adventures, Espionage, Drago's Castle, and Deep Space. The students were immersed in a realistic hands-on experience. The computer controlled special effects and physical interactions put the students in the center of the action and it made them feel as if they were in a movie or video game. After going to 5 Wits the students enjoyed food in the food court. They chose from a variety of foods to eat and they sat together with each other. They enjoyed each other's company while discussing the results from their adventures. They had some pretty interesting conversations revolving around what they could have done different in the adventures, what types of food they were eating, and various mall experiences. It was a very fun adventure for everyone, even the teachers and chaperons. The students were well behaved and really used their minds and worked together to reach a common goal, which is what this experience was all about. This was definitely a trip to remember!

On Friday, March 16, 2018 the SAS Middle School welcomed an Irish Dance School to our building. The students were treated to a performance from the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance. This is the third year that the school has visited us with their amazing dancers, many of which are headed to national and world competitions. Students and Staff were in awe of the talents demonstrated. Thank you Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Greenwood and the parents who brought your students! This was a all-around amazing day! #SASAtoms #SASCS
On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!
