Throughout the week of February 26, 2018, SASCS Elementary School celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday. Students were very creative with their silly socks, wacky-hair day and funny-hat day. Older students performed a reader's theater for first-grade classes. Many classrooms celebrated reading Dr. Seuss books, and students competed in a reading challenge by logging all the pages they read over Winter Break. What a great way to promote reading and creativity at school!

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, #SASAtoms and their families enjoyed a Luau themed Reading Night. Activities included: writing sight words in sand, Palm Tree letter sounds, reading by the pool, a board game, crafts, and a fun photo booth. Students enjoyed completing a scavenger hunt. Parents were able to learn about the importance of reading over the summer as well. Did you know your child can lose 22% (approx. 2 levels) of their reading level if they don't read over the summer?! Searching high and low for elusive gem stones, students in all three grades of SAS Middle School visited the Herkimer Diamond Mines on Wednesday, September 26th. Each grade was given a tour of the facility and an introduction to the quartz-based "Herkimer Diamond." Students enjoyed the fun, educational trip and many of them brought home multiple samples. On Thursday, October 25, 2018, the fourth grade #SASAtoms took a trip to Abbott's farm. They picked both pumpkins and apples, took a wagon ride, and visited with the many animals that call the farm home. Students were given a tour and learned about the apple orchard, pumpkins, crops, the cider press operation, the farm animals, and the farm's history.

From June 27th to July 8th, 2016 the SAS Middle School held the Summer STEM Camp. Students enjoyed a variety of activities in this three week adventure. Financial literacy subjects such as budgeting, tax withholding, and the stock markets were experienced through various computer simulations. Computer coding projects included adventure games created by our wonderful students. Engineering projects included the construction of water rockets and water balloon launchers. Students finished the experience by utilizing green screen technology to record their own videos in OUTER SPACE! The first year of the camp included many great experiences and time to build better experiences for next year!

On Friday, March 3rd, 2017, the SAS Middle School held its Annual Science Fair. This event included grades four through seven. Preparation for this event started in September with the choosing of their topics for their controlled experiment. This event included nearly 300 students across 4 grades with just about every topic imaginable. Special guest judges joined us from the Society of Physics Students at Syracuse University. Parents and families kicked off the event by sharing the fair with their scholar and heard some opening remarks from the event organizer, Mr. Carter. The Science Fair is a demonstration to the STEM education of our students. Many students will be going on from this event to the CNY Science & Engineering Fair on March 26th! Keep up the great work! The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School.

#SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student.

This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

At the onset of the recent 2nd Annual Jazz Festival, SAS students put on a show of their own. They eagerly displayed some of the mechanical-engineering skills acquired through school courses and clubs centered on STEM and robotics education. Guests at the event had the opportunity to meet students who built their own robots and enthusiastically explained how they function. The fundraiser was a special evening of great food and great music, with dinner by Carrabbas Italian Grill and jazz by world-renowned bass guitarist Gerald Veasley, accompanied by several local musical artists, including vocalist Danielle Evans, saxophonist Malik Clanton, keyboard player Daniel Pugh and drummer Jose Varona. The SAS high school band led the musical portion of the event, with Believer by Imagine Dragons, arranged by Kelly and Carlson, under the direction of music teacher Ms. Lexi Carlson. We thank everyone who made this special event possible—sponsors, parents, students and staff—and we look forward to next year’s event!

On August 24th, 2017, bridging school and home life, Syracuse Academy of Science schools recently hosted grade-specific orientation for parents, guardians and families of new and returning students. During the informative sessions, discussions were held on the following subjects: the student handbook, parking regulations, student drop-off/pick-up procedures, attendance, uniforms and academic standards. The meet-and-greet format enabled parents to get to know school staff and address any concerns or questions as the new school year gets underway.

On Thursday, June 16th, 2016 one-hundred students and staff from the SAS Middle School went to Anthony Santoro Park for the year ending Field Day event. Students participated in a variety of events and activities including basketball, dodge ball, and soccer. Picnic lunch was provided to all students with ice cream and cookie treats to cap of the meal. This was a wonderful event to finish off the school year. On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

“Our motto is ‘let me be great.’ It’s about potential,” Pickard said. “It came from one of our coaches who lost her son, he always said, ‘let me be great.’ That’s what we did tonight and what we want to keep doing.”

The Atoms’ next opportunity comes on Friday when they meet Allegany-Limestone. That game is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. tip at Hudson Valley Community College.

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

From August 1st to the 5th, 2016 students from SAS enjoyed the SUNY ESF Science Camp. The "Science" stands for Summer Camps Investigating Ecology in Neighborhood and City Environments, Students enjoyed a variety of activities in our city's environment. They took water samples testing for various factors including insect levels and pollutants. Students explored the lake at the Clark Reservation State Park. Samples of the fish popluation were taken at Onondaga Lake Park. The amazing activities concluded at the SUNY ESF campus with solar powered cars to demonstrate the renewable resource that we all need to embrace! Thank you to the counselors for providing our students with a great experience! We will see you next year!

On Thursday, October 18, 2018, It was our third grader's turn to Tim's Pumpkin Patch. Despite the chilly weather, our #SASAtoms enjoyed this fun-filled fall activity and even got to take a pumpkin home with them. Their favorite part was the warm cinnamon doughnuts and apple cider with their classmates and teachers. These team building activities are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, SAS Middle School 7th graders visited the Rochester Institute of Technology RIT). On campus, students took an exploratory tour of several buildings, including, but not limited to, science, business, design, technology and engineering. Students ate lunch and participated in a hands-on group activity in which they built a tower out of paper, index cards and tape. The towers were to be designed with three things in mind: beauty, height and strength. First-place winners received RIT t-shirts and bragging rights. On Friday, November 18th, 2016, eight #SASCS Middle school girls with Ms. Knapp, who is 6th & 7th grade science teacher, attended "Girls in the STEM Workplace" conference at SRC, Inc. which opened its doors to student and teachers so they can meet STEM professionals and witness STEM in action. These events included a tour of SRC's state-of-the-art facilities, games and activities to introduce new concepts, one-on-one time with engineers and scientists, lunch, and more. Students also learned what work feels like in a professional environment.

This was a special opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in CNY through those practicing those disciplines.

On Monday, March 5, 2018, students in the middle school participated in Read Across America to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ (belated) birthday! ELA classes began the day with a read aloud of The Lorax, discussion on the environment, and time to drop everything and read!

In the afternoon, students in each grade rotated among three different stations related to four Dr. Seuss books: Horton Hatches the Egg, The Cat in the Hat, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and The Lorax. The stations included more reading and writing, STEM activities, and a video with activities about The Lorax. Students left for the day with a “truffula tree seed” in hand and a quote in their minds.

Building skills in communication, problem solving and listening, all SAS Middle School students participated in team-building activities held in the school’s gym on Wednesday, September 20th. Called the Olweus Anti-Bullying Event, it is held annually and its goal is to bring bullying out of the shadows and show students how to be upstanders instead bystanders.

The first activity focused on communication and cooperation, with students working in pairs to give their partners verbal direction on how to draw a simple image. The entire group shared their images to see which pair was able to communicate and re-create the image closest to the actual picture.

Three activities followed and focused on trust, communication and listening skills. Students worked in pairs to guide their partners through a "mine field" while blindfolded. Students had to get to the other side of the gym without hitting anything in their paths. A variation of this game required students to walk to a location blindfolded and retrieve as many items as they could as their partner guided them verbally. Additionally, students worked in teams to get from one end of the gym to the other through a "sea of hot chocolate” as they stepped on "marshmallows." The last station was a photo booth in which students formed many group poses with props to convey a "No Bullying" message. The students were good sports and enjoyed working in a variety of groups and pairs. They all showed they can be effective upstanders. Go ATOMS #SASAtoms #SASCS #OLWEUS

On Friday, September 8th, 2017, in honor of National Grandparents’ Day, students at SASCS elementary school celebrate the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren at “Granola Bars with Grandparents Day”. Students greet loved ones with open arms and lots of smiles, then spend time drawing pictures of them while engaging in uplifting conversations. The special occasion provides an important opportunity for students to gain greater awareness of the vital strength, love and guidance older adults in their lives can offer and enjoy giving. It also encourages people of all ages to work together to foster greater communication from one generation to another.

On Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 the SAS middle school students held their monthly anti-bully classroom meeting with their 6th period teachers. The topic of the meeting was respect. They discussed ways that they could show respect both in person and online, how important it is to treat others with respect and talks about how respect and preventing bullying are connected. The idea was for them to have a better understanding how they can show respect in all facets of their lives. These meetings are a part of our continual effort to bring bullying out of the shadows in order to promote a safe, comfortable environment for all of our students.

On Thursday, November 9th, 2017, SAS high school is proud of all its students and the hard work they apply. Students received awards marking their academic achievements during the first marking period this year. Students were called up by grade level to receive thier certificates of achievement. Students were awarded for honor roll & high honor roll.

Students were awarded certificates for their hard work in their core classes as well as special presentations for specials. We recognized and awarded students who have the best coping skills in the face of adversity. On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School celebrated it's twelfth annual commencement at the Crouse Hinds Theatre Civic Center in Syracuse, New York. The keynote speaker was Jennifer Sanders, award-winning news anchor for News Channel 9. Sanders touched on the importance of surrounding yourself with those who will elevate you and help you find a way to achieve your dreams. On Thursday, October 13th, 2016 the elementary school held its first PBIS event. Teachers chose an activity to administer and students in all grade levels signed up for the activity of their choice. Students chose from a range of activities such as a movie with popcorn, yoga, finger knitting, art projects, Legos, and so much more. The day was full of laughs and fun activities as a reward for students' hard work and dedication so far this year at SAS Elementary.

On Tuesday, November 8th 2016, 6th grade students from the SAS Middle School visited Howe Caverns. This amazing landmark, first discovered by Farmer Lester Howe, has regularly been the second most visited landmark in New York State. Students traveled over 150 feet undergroud to see the amazing limestone formations that have developed over the last two centuries. They were amazed by the many sights as they were directed by the great guides who accompanied all of the student groups. The trip was capped off by a stop to the Cavern Museum and Gift Shop! This great trip was enjoyed by all!

On Friday, May 11, 2018, the #SASCS High School held its 2nd Annual Language and Culture Festival. Students developed culturally relevant projects, ranging from researching traditional clothing to cooking an authentic dish. When students learn about cultures from around the world, it widens their worldview and provides an opportunity to explore their differences and similarities. Students and families enjoyed learning about other countries while eating delicious food and watching dancing performances from Samba Laranja, The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble, and the Wachewa African Drumming and Dancing team. On Saturday, March 10, 2018, Syracuse Academy of Science advances to Class C state semifinals with 62-57 win over Bainbridge-Guilford.

It wasn’t easy. But it did feel inevitable.

It took 32 minutes of steely effort, but Syracuse Academy of Science used timely shooting and 20 points from Lyrik Jackson to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford 62-57 on Saturday at the SRC Arena in the Class C regional finals. The win advanced the #SASAtoms into the state semifinals, where they will take on Allegany-Limestone.

“We dug in. We just dug in,” SAS head coach Reginald Pickard said. “We knew that we had it in us we just had to let it come out.”

The Atoms needed all the grit they could muster in the fourth quarter. Trailing 45-44 to start the final frame, SAS put together an 11-2 run to start the fourth, creating a 55-47 advantage. Alexius Pierce, Freey Pleasants and Xyel Bradford all contributed to a run that Jackson capped with a three from the left side.

“That’s what coach teaches us,” Jackson said. “At times like that you can’t feel the pressure, we had to stay calm and be focused. So that’s what we did.”

Bainbridge-Guilford responded with a 8-0 run to even the score at 55, but Jackson, Pierce and Pleasants again combined for a 7-2 run that clinched the five-point win for #SASCS. All in all, the Atoms finished with five players scoring more than five points and three players in double figures.

“We have a great team, and it makes us hard to defend,” Pickard said. “It gives us a balanced attack, and we can spread it out.”

The late run was a product of that depth and a level of resilience after the Atoms had led by as much as nine in the first quarter, only to eventually trail by as much as six in the second.

“It’s a team effort,” Jackson said. “We were flat for a little, and we knew they were a good team. Coach just told us to run, and it was scrappy but it worked out.”

Jackson led the Atoms with 20 points, just missing a double-double with eight rebounds. Pleasants and Pierce added 12 apiece, and Bradford pitched in eight. Abigail Selfridge led all scorers with 23 for Bainbridge-Guilford.

Having unlocked enough of their potential to break into the state semifinals, Pickard said his girls are just getting started.

On Friday, November 18th, 2016, eight #SASCS Middle school girls with Ms. Knapp, who is 6th & 7th grade science teacher, attended "Girls in the STEM Workplace" conference at SRC, Inc. which opened its doors to student and teachers so they can meet STEM professionals and witness STEM in action. These events included a tour of SRC's state-of-the-art facilities, games and activities to introduce new concepts, one-on-one time with engineers and scientists, lunch, and more. Students also learned what work feels like in a professional environment.

This was a special opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers in CNY through those practicing those disciplines.
