Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.

Under the rock.

Taken in a former sandstone quarry near our place. This quarry was exploited from the 18th century to 1937 to produce blocks for Parisian sidewalks edges . Nowadays this is a place for climbers to practise their hobby near Paris.

What makes the Valley of Fire so spectacular are the petrified sand dunes. The sand stone shows so many different shades of yellow, orange, pink and red - it's simply amazing.

Brave-ish pilot Qurodo Xaggins enters the dangerous Mordor Nebula in his Sandstone < type fighter, Great Eagle.

He must shoot the One Lantern into the star forming at the center of the nebula so that the malevolent supercomputer within, Saurtron, will at last be destroyed.

Within the nebula, Saurtron's formidable army of Cyborcs and the chilling Nazgûliens await Qurodo...

All because someone mentioned hobbit starfighters in the 14x14x6 SSC thread, which just so happens to be what this is for. (And honestly, a hobbit was all I could fit in that tiny cockpit. XD)

Enjoy. :)

Wind and water are the greatest artists on Mother Earth. They sculpture the most marvelous and funny sandstone formations one could think of.

Sandstone Falls

New River Gorge, WV

Well I just got back from four days of exploring waterfalls in WV with some really good people. We went to over a dozen waterfalls around the New River Gorge most of the time we spent in the Blue Stone & Upper New River which is the region where the New River begins.

A couple of days we had to battle the sun, and we also were shooting in a down pour but on this particular day we caught some pretty dramatic cloud cover and lighting while we were at Sandstone.

I snapped this photo with my Canon Rebel T5 in Brookville, Kansas, population 254 (2018). Brookville was known as a cowtown and as a railroad shipping point from the 1860's to the 1880's. Perhaps, the Brookville Hotel (a former hotel known for it's chicken dinners) is its biggest stake in Kansas history. The hotel (in the background of this photo) closed in 2000 and built a replica structure near I-70 in Abilene, Kansas. The town can also be seen in the movie "Up the Academy."

Kane Springs sandstone pillars, Grand County, Utah.

Kane Springs was a major water stop on the Old Spanish Trail (Viejo Sendero Español), an important trade route from settlements around what is now Santa Fe, NM to Los Angeles, CA. The 700+ mile trail was used by hundreds of pack trains until as late as 1855. The spring is still an important water source for the area around Moab, Utah.

The iconic rock known as "Half and Half", Coyote Buttes South, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona.

A fresh take on the Arizona slot canyons with this artistic edit. I really liked this rock formation but couldn't quite get the look I wanted with traditional editing styles. So I decided to go a different route. I felt the striking color contrast was really eye catching and works well together.

Sunset at the second wave in North Coyote Buttes. Yes I did place the wood there for the photo. I figured, why not? Even the best photographers out there are doing the same thing. I feel that it adds something different and unique to the shot. What do you think? Thank you for looking

One person expression of love is an eye sore to many. This is one of many names and symbols carved into "Autograph Hoodoo" along Alkali road in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. This pillar of sandstone has been defaced by countless visitors many leaving their names or cattle brands. The hoodoo is part of an outcrop of Pennsylvanian Tensleep Sandstone along the edge of the Bighorn Mountain uplift in northern Wyoming.

There are places where Native Americans left art on the rock surfaces. Early Pioneers left there names in isolated areas carved on the rock. Those carvings are of historical value because they tell us something about the people who lived here and not much information is readily available. However modern defacement of these natural features are selfish, egotistical, ugly, thoughtless and illegal. There are many ways to leave a legacy in our modern world. We can preserve our writings, electronic communication and through various others means leave a mark on this world. Please don't leave your mark on natural features. I saw this statement in a news report by a man who defaced a natural landmark in Utah: “While hiking in the Moab area with my family, I drew with a sandstone shard, a heart with my and my wife’s initials and the year above it. At that moment, I foolishly thought I was conveying my love for my wife when, in fact, I was tarnishing the experience for others who also want to enjoy magnificent scenery. My actions were wrong. I am extremely sorry for my conduct. I acted in the spur of the moment and did not stop to think about what I was doing.” Please don't let this happen. Enjoy our beautiful wild places and adopt the ethics of "leave no trace".

We arrived at the wave just as the sun came out. What luck! We already past about half of the other 20 permit holders hiking out as we were hiking in. We made a good decision hiking to the Wahweap Hoodoos before we came here.

Bohemian Switzerland also known as Czech Switzerland, is a picturesque region in the north-western Czech Republic. It lies on the Czech side of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains north of Děčín on both sides of the Elbe River. It extends eastward into the Lusatian Mountains and westward into the Ore Mountains. Its highest elevation is the mountain Děčínský Sněžník at 726m above sea level. It has been a protected area (as ChKO Labske Piskovce) since 1972.

The region along the right side of the Elbe became a national park on January 1, 2000, the České Švýcarsko National Park. The National Park is adjacent to the Saxon Switzerland National Park (Sächsische Schweiz) in Germany.

Another from Kauai on the south shore. I had been trying to pull this shot off a couple sunrises now. With the blowing wind bringing the ocean mist right onto my lens in a matter of seconds on most mornings this just was not happening. Until this morning when the winds were a little less and I was able to time it and get the water flow returning to the ocean before my lens needed a serious wipe down. Thanks in advance for all comments!
