Coastal Defence Battery; Observation and Command and Control for Fort San Jacinto

On a recent trip to Galveston Island I stumbled upon what is left of Fort San Jacinto at the north end of Galveston Island near East Beach. I have been able to uncover very little in the way of historical references for this fortification except anecdotal references.

The area where these shots were taken has been used as a fortification since the French and Spanish were here. The system of forst was expanded under the government of the Republic of Texas and was even used briefly by both the Confederate Army and the army of the north during the Civil War due to its key location overloooking Galveston Bay.

The pictured structure was completed in the early 1900's. During World War II the current structures anchored a series of gun emplacements (coastal batteries) that protected the port approaches.

Sadly in later years it was used as a dumping site for the Army Corps of Engineers during dredging operations after having been abandoned and left to the ravages of numerous hurricanes and vandals.

A piece of Texas history left to rot away, sad.

SAN FRANCISCO ZOO - adda dada used to work at the SF ZOO in high school & college way back in 1973-1978. My friends and I went back for a long over due visit. ADDA DADA was so impressed with the improvements at the zoo, that he purchased a zoo membership & he visited the zoo 4 times in one week. ADDA DADA is also going to 'adopt a zoo animal", the HADADA ibis of course...

Had one very windy, stormy [but dry] day over there & the following morning there were loads of jellyfish washed up on the beach & visible in the sea.
