In the creek, below our house, we saw a pair of adult salmon spawning. She swished her tail over the gravel to make a spawning bed, or "redd".

Every year, the salmon leave Lake Tahoe to swim up Taylor Creek and spawn. This shallow area of the creek is only 2 to 3 feet deep, but you can see easily through the crystal-clear water.

Wild Pacific Salmon reefnet fishing is a historical Pacific Northwest salmon fishing method. It has been practiced for centuries by the Native American tribes of the Puget Sound. Fisherman still stand on towers, wearing polaroid sunglasses, waiting to spot a school of Sockeye, Chinook, Pink, Coho or Chum salmon swimming along the reef and over the small net suspended between two boats. This process is incredibly selective, as spotters can identify the exact type of fish swimming below. When a school of salmon is observed, the net is quickly pulled up and the fish are gently spilled into a netted live well to relax after a brief struggle. This process is not only humane but allows for the dissipation of bitter lactic acid built up in the salmon flesh, which results in a sweeter flavor.

"Filet of Salmon on a Bed of Sauteed Leeks and Green Onion".
Best viewed large.
Saw this on a menu once, and although I did not order it, I decided to try to create it at home. It has been a favorite of mine for several years.
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Trim the ends of the leeks, cut the bottom part of the leek in half, lengthwise, and thinly slice the white part, as well as about one inch of the light green. Sadly the bulk of it gets thrown away. If you buy them by the pound, you'll see why these become an expensive item! Leeks grow in very sandy soil, so wash the cut leeks carefully to get all the grit out. Trim and slice the green onion the same way. For two salmon filets, I used 2 leeks and six green onion.
Season the salmon with salt and pepper and bake 10-15 minutes. A general rule of thumb is about 10 minutes per inch of thickness, if you like your fish cooked through.
In a pan, heat equal parts olive oil and butter. Add the leeks and green onions, salt and pepper to taste, and saute until soft. Should take about 10 minutes.
Place the leek mixture on the plate and place the salmon filet on top. Pretty simple yet tasty. The sweetness of the leeks works very well with the salmon. You could also add garlic to the leek mixture, and a splash or two of white wine when sauteing would be nice as well.

An exterior shot of the Salmon Homestead to go with the interior view posted earlier. The Salmons homesteaded in the 1880's on the site of the ancient Puebloan ruins eventually named after the family.
Looks like another roof was installed over the old roof in an attempt to protect the structure. The "new" roof looks pretty decrepit too.

While mining my disk drive for a lost image, I came across this photo which i had never finished processing.
I took this picture from a small island in the river where I had been fly fishing - until this bear showed up! The bear had chased this salmon up the channel behind the island into a shallow stretch. Then, with remarkable deftness, it swiped at the fish and then snagged it. It only took a few minutes before the whole salmon had been consumed. The bear sauntered off to continue fishing for salmon, and I returned to fishing for rainbow trout.
Genesis 42:28 “So he said unto his brethren My silver hath been returned, yea verily, there it is in my sack! Then went forth their heart and they turned trembling - each man unto his brother saying. Wharf is this that God hath done to us?”
Well that's what we call hereabouts... I sure there's a proper metrological name too, but ours is so descriptive.
