I'd be the first to say that there's no way Dubai could ever be described as 'serene' but incredible peace and silence is exactly what I experienced during my early morning shoot at Dubai Marina. Ramadan probably had a lot to do with it as most people wake up very late during this month and morning activities seem to be reduced to zero. The place was as quiet as a camp in the middle of the desert. Water was like an oily mirror and I could almost hear my own hearbeat. It was eerily peaceful and I believe this photograph reflects that mood rather well.

Captured with the Canon 5Ds and Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II with a LEE Big Stopper (10-stop ND filter).

Image was processed with the mood, rather than realism in mind.

I used Lightroom CC 2015 which pulled an amazing amount of detail from the challenging, single-frame exposure. Although I exposed this capture for the highlights which produced almost black buildings, I still managed to recover all the details in the shadows. I still ended up with a virtually noiseless and extremely crisp picture.

Secondary grading was accomplished with Photoshop CC 2015 which I love profoundly and with a NIK Suite of plugins.

Happpy Sunday,

Hope you are enjoying good weather

The last day's of a salmon's life is not easy, having to migrate upstream back to its spanning grounds. In this image, the second in the series, you can see one salmon working its way upstream through shallow waters and obstructions such as the fallen branches in its way. This image is a tighter crop of the previous image.

This one was lucky. A young racoon wandered over this same spot about a minute after this salmon had safely crossed it and had swam off.

Salmon Arm is a city in British Columbia's interior, located on Shuswap Lake, midway between Calgary and Vancouver on the Trans-Canada Highway. Taken in September when the water level was somewhat low!

In the creek, below our house, we saw a pair of adult salmon spawning. She swished her tail over the gravel to make a spawning bed, or "redd".

Every year, the salmon leave Lake Tahoe to swim up Taylor Creek and spawn. This shallow area of the creek is only 2 to 3 feet deep, but you can see easily through the crystal-clear water.

Wild Pacific Salmon reefnet fishing is a historical Pacific Northwest salmon fishing method. It has been practiced for centuries by the Native American tribes of the Puget Sound. Fisherman still stand on towers, wearing polaroid sunglasses, waiting to spot a school of Sockeye, Chinook, Pink, Coho or Chum salmon swimming along the reef and over the small net suspended between two boats. This process is incredibly selective, as spotters can identify the exact type of fish swimming below. When a school of salmon is observed, the net is quickly pulled up and the fish are gently spilled into a netted live well to relax after a brief struggle. This process is not only humane but allows for the dissipation of bitter lactic acid built up in the salmon flesh, which results in a sweeter flavor.

"Filet of Salmon on a Bed of Sauteed Leeks and Green Onion".

Best viewed large.

Saw this on a menu once, and although I did not order it, I decided to try to create it at home. It has been a favorite of mine for several years.

Preheat the oven to 350F.

Trim the ends of the leeks, cut the bottom part of the leek in half, lengthwise, and thinly slice the white part, as well as about one inch of the light green. Sadly the bulk of it gets thrown away. If you buy them by the pound, you'll see why these become an expensive item! Leeks grow in very sandy soil, so wash the cut leeks carefully to get all the grit out. Trim and slice the green onion the same way. For two salmon filets, I used 2 leeks and six green onion.

Season the salmon with salt and pepper and bake 10-15 minutes. A general rule of thumb is about 10 minutes per inch of thickness, if you like your fish cooked through.

In a pan, heat equal parts olive oil and butter. Add the leeks and green onions, salt and pepper to taste, and saute until soft. Should take about 10 minutes.

Place the leek mixture on the plate and place the salmon filet on top. Pretty simple yet tasty. The sweetness of the leeks works very well with the salmon. You could also add garlic to the leek mixture, and a splash or two of white wine when sauteing would be nice as well.
