Abandoned in the 1990s when it became unviable, the Arigna mine is now a fascinating destination, with the underground tour and commentary from guides who are retired mineworkers evoking the harsh and punishing conditions in which coal was won from seams as thin as 20 inches (50 centimetres).

This Chicago west side hospital closed due to taking kickbacks for referring medicare and medicaid patients to Sacred Heart Hospital. They were also making up fake and ghost patients that received care but did not. The FBI and Chicago police raided the hospital records and sadly it was shut down. The hospital has been abandoned since 2013.

Kylemore Castle was built in 1863–68 as the home of Mitchell Henry, a Manchester surgeon and industrialist who became the MP for Co. Galway 1871–85.
During the First World War, Irish Benedictine nuns based in Ypres, Belgium since 1665 were forced to flee their abbey, initially being evacuated to England before buying Kylemore Castle. The new abbey became an international boarding school for catholic girls (including locals as day pupils), until the school closed in 2010. The Abbey remains a convent, and also a tourist attraction in a beautiful location beside Connemara National Park.
The slope behind the Abbey rises steeply to Doughruagh, a 526 m secondary peak of Garraun. Since 1932 this statue of the Sacred Heart has stood halfway up the hill, as a token of thanksgiving from the nuns.
From a distance, the secular architecture of a Victorian country house doesn't instantly reveal its current religious nature, and the statue gives the slightly unfortunate impression of depicting someone waving cheerily from the amongst the heather.
Visitors aren't permitted to climb the path alone, though I think there are accompanied walks.

Roman Catholic church, remaining part of a convent. Designed in 1881 in Gothic style by Peter Paul Pugin and Cuthbert Pugin and foundation stone laid in that year but not completed until 1890 and tower not until 1897. This is the only remaining part of the Convent of the Visitation, built by an order of nuns founded in France in 1610, of which the remaining buildings were demolished in 1982. EXTERIOR: Built of stock brick with stone dressings and slate roof. Comprises vestibule higher than the rest of the church, three bay nave and three bay chancel in one range, south transept, south west tower and west porch. West front has a gable with stone coping, cross-shaped saddlestone and kneelers. Triple lancet window. Brick porch with large arch with dripmould, double doors and steps to street. Tower in three stages with slate pyramidal roof with metal cross-shaped finial. Stone fretted balustrading with gargoyle waterspouts and machicolations. Top or bell stage has two trefoil openings with wooden louvres. Central stage has stone niche with crocket and statue of the Virgin with Child flanked by trefoil lancets. Buttresses. Through archway to lowest stage. South side has three lancets separated by buttresses and a gabled transept with kneelers and rose window. North side has two lancets and the nuns choir was originally attached here. East front has gable with cross-shaped saddlestone and kneelers and triple lancet window with trefoil heads, the centre taller . INTERIOR: Bell tower has bell of 1757 made by Chris. Aug. Becker in Hildesheim in 1757. Vestibule has wooden roof and screen with three lancets. Nave has arch-braced roof supported on stone corbels and five stained glass windows depicting the Good Shepherd, Queen conceived without sin, St Michael and the Two Labourers in the Vineyard, Tobias and the Angel and an unknown bishop saint. Seven rows of pews survive and origiinal tiled floor. South window has rose window with four Christ in Majesty together with St Francis de Sales and St Jane Frances de Chantal, founder and Foundress of the Order of the Visitation. Original altar with four marble colonnettes and three panels depicting Sacred Heart flanked by Angels, carved stone reredos with six trefoil-headed marble panels and marble feature with brass cupboard containing the Host with elaborate octagonal canopy with marble columns and stone gables with angels rising from the bases. HISTORY: Only remaining part of the convent of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. Originally founded in France in 1610 a Polish branch were expelled in 1865, first to Germany and then Walmer in 1875 where they bought a house called Roselands and gradually built a convent and chapel. All the other convent buildings were demolished in 1982.

Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center is located in the heart of Greater Cincinnati and sits on 13.1 acres of landscaped property in a residential area of Norwood, Ohio. This structure, originally built in 1920 under the direction of Archbishop Henry Moeller as a major seminary, has now become a Marian center.
Tenants include The Catholic Shop, Sacred Heart Radio, Men of the Sacred Heart, American Heritage Girls and Our Lady of Light Foundation. Retreat facilities have been renovated to complement the old seminary architecture.
Doors of the Center open each weekday morning at 8:00 a.m. and remain open until 8:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome to view the beautifully remodeled chapels, halls, offices, library, gift shop, restrooms, meeting and assembly rooms.
The reason why Our Lady of Light came here to the Cincinnati, Ohio area was to remove the darkness in our America and lead us to the ‘Light’ of her son Jesus.
September 1, 1991 – In a field in Indiana, a beautiful woman appears to five mothers and identifies herself as “The Lady of Light.” One of the five mothers is the Batavia (Ohio) visionary.
December 1991 – Fr. Leroy Smith, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring, Kentucky receives correspondence indicating that his parish church will be “a place of great devotion…where Our Lady will manifest herself.”
August 31, 1992 – The first of annual public manifestations of Our Lady of Light occurs at midnight at St. Joseph Church. They continue there through August 31, 1994.
March 15, 1993 – Fr. Smith and the Gospa Prayer Group headquarter at Monk’s Retreat, formerly Mount St. Mary Seminary, later to be named Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, Norwood (Cincinnati), Ohio.
June 7, 1995 – Our Lady honors Fr. Smith’s request to appear at midnight on August 31, 1995 at “Her House,” Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, in Norwood (Cincinnati), Ohio, instead of at St. Joseph’s Church in Kentucky.
Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, 5440 Moeller Avenue, Norwood (Cincinnati), Ohio, formerly Mount St. Mary Seminary, the major seminary for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, was built in 1923 by Archbishop Henry Moeller. The 13-acre site includes the Archbishop’s House, now used as the Priests’ Residence, and the 300-room seminary building. In 1982, the seminary and archbishop’s residence were moved to other facilities. In 1992, Fr. Richard R. Willhelm, a retired archdiocesan priest, purchased the abandoned property with the encouragement and support of several laymen. It became part of his organization, the Monk’s Retreat, which consisted of small homes for clergy rest and recollection in Kentucky and Florida. The Norwood site was re-blessed, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and renamed Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center on May 1, 1992. Our Lady often refers to it as “My House”.
