A former lace factory (from 1865) now converted into apartments. It's conversion, first into offices, was a bit of a disaster; when the internal structures were demolished, the facade was insufficiently supported and much it collapsed. What is seen today, is an accurate rebuild that the local planning authority insisted on. The curved section at the front is a new addition. Talbot Street, Nottingham (2018).

Juvenile Cooper's Hawk ~ (Accipiter cooperii)

A hawk I wish I got more opportunities to photograph. I love their intensity, agility and power. This one landed above me while I was on another subject. A rush!

Thanks for visiting!

Sydney Skyline from Waverton looking across Berry's bay.

Berry's Bay has historically been an active spot for boat and shipping activity, and is the site of the old Woodly's marina. Woodly's is now defunct and the precinct is under redevelopment as a controvertial marina for super yachts. In the meantime, there is still some interesting shipping in the bay.

Clark's Grebe fishing on the Bear River near Salt Lake, Utah

Let's pretend Rich had got focus past the trees and nailed this beauty, lets further pretend that he'd put his beer can 300mm in his pocket so he'd be ready to get this shot, but alas.... I'm only posting it so you can get a blurry hint of the amazing sight that I had for a full ten seconds and then he was gone. Exhilarating doesn't cover it, wish I had got the shot, but dang it was beautiful. :-)

Cooper's Hawk, staring at me while I was working on my computer in Chester County, PA.

Whenever the birds go quiet and the squirrels I know that there is a raptor close by, but I was surprised when I looked up to see this one so close.

Another shot from my trip to Well's last week.

No visit to Wells is complete without a visit to this famous spot, and on Wednesday last week, I managed to get it free of people for all of five minutes which was just enough time for me to get the shot I wanted.

Vicars’ Close, adjoining Wells Cathedral, is believed to be the most complete example of a medieval Close in the UK. This significant landmark was designed to provide communal accommodation for the Vicars Choral, who sang daily worship within the Cathedral. This centuries-old tradition continues today and is a unique and much valued part of life at Wells Cathedral.

The houses of the close were built in the 14th century under direction from Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury and the iconic chimneys were added in the 15th century. Originally 42 houses were built (one per vicar), but some were combined following the Reformation when vicars were allowed to marry. Today, the Close comprises 27 residences, a chapel, library, treasury and muniment room. There is also a dining hall connected to the Cathedral by a covered walkway, the Chain Gate Bridge.

Reflecting the Close’s significance, all its buildings are Grade I listed. The current occupants still include all twelve men of the Vicars Choral, plus the organists and virgers. Vicars Choral have remained at the heart of life at Wells Cathedral since the 1100s and are now recognised as a world-class choir.

A magical performance called Sway's Bloom at Brookfield Place New York. It combines theater, dance and circus as they balance on 14 foot tall poles that bend and sway.

It's fun to watch the Anhingas hunt for food. They spear their prey and come up to the surface. They then maneuver to dislodge the fish by flipping it up in the air and catching it to swallow. Picture was taken very close to my favorite snag on the northwest corner of the boardwalk at Green Cay.

Franklin's Gulls at Blacks Creek Reservoir near Boise, Idaho

In breeding plumage, and sometimes in nonbreeding plumage as well, the Franklin's Gull often shows a rosy pink cast (rarely salmon) on its chest and abdomen. This color is most apparent on the shafts and bases of its feathers. The color fades as the breeding season progresses as the pigment is broken down by sunlight.

This Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) loves to take five on the very end of any available branch

Anna’s Hummingbirds are mostly green and gray, without any rufous or orange marks on the body. The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray without direct sunlight.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are a blur of motion as they hover before flowers looking for nectar and insects. Listen for the male's scratchy metallic song and look for him perched above head level in trees and shrubs.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.

A beautiful Trogon endemic to the island of Borneo. It is named after the British explorer John Whitehead (1860–1899) who collected natural history specimens in Borneo and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

I sat out front for a short time after lunch and this Anna's came in and posed for me. I'd like to imagine that she's the one on the nest, but I can't be 2 places at once to see.

We spotted this Harris’s Hawk on top of a utility pole while driving home from a recent trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. I pulled the van over and let everyone out and the bird took off and flew right over us. It certainly was a surprise for me and luckily I had my camera in my hands and caught him about a second before he was too close to fit in the frame. It was a great way to end a very successful trip.

I believe that this is the same bird the frequently visits my yard in Yakima County, Washington. If not the same bird I have several adult Cooper's Hawks that stop by almost every day. A juvenile Coopers/Sharp Shinned was here this morning but I didn't see this one today. IMG_5791

In snow and green grass. This is Canada's only endemic songbird and breeds in the north central region. This rare visitor to our area in the east, has been continuing in the location for almost two months. I went to the site on Nov 20 and despite waiting for almost three hours the bird was a no show. However, on this day it appeared twice in 30 minutes to feed on seed pile that kind people left there for it. Inksetter Road, Hamilton.

Thor’s Hammer – Looks like Thor still has lost his worthiness with his hammer as it is sitting on top this hoodoo in Bryce Canyon. Really, though how can one go to Bryce Canyon and not take a photo of Thor’s hammer. I took a few different perspectives, and I will post some later as I have time to edit them.

Peter’s Stone is a circular limestone dome in the Wardlow Mires, northern end of Cressbrook Dale. It is also referred to as Gibbet Rock and shown on the OS map as Peter’s Stone. This is where the last gibbet in the county stood and local legend has it this was the last gibbeting. A gibbet was a gallows used to display the bodies of criminals after their execution and this is where they were left until long after execution with their bones rattling against the iron cage serving as a deterrent to other would be criminals.
