An Anna's Hummingbird feeding on a Columbine flower.

Photographed at my home, Yakima County, Washington. This bird, the first Steller's Jay I have ever seen in my yard has been showing up almost every day for about a month even though the Scrub-Jays have tried their best to chase it out of their territory. IMG_9594

Apparently Q's new secret weapon isn't as secret as he (or I) thought ;-) So here's yet another needle capture for Macro Monday's "EYE(S)" theme.

The row of seven needles is 3,5 cm / 1,37795 inches wide. Please view large.

Q's neue Geheimwaffe ist gar nicht so geheim wie er (und ich) dachte(n). Hier kommt also ein weiteres Nähnadel-Foto ;-)

Breite der Nadelreihe: 3,5 cm. Bitte zoomen ;-)

Thank you for your kind comments, I appreciate every single one, and your faves! Vielen Dank für Eure tollen Kommentare und Faves!

"S or Sea, Shark, Skull", Street Art Ghent, Belgium by Cee Pil.

Found some more info about him on internet:

"The whole work can be summarized in the letter S. Sea, Shark, Skull. Artist Cee Pil is a master of interweaving images. Usually he puts two animals together, this time it is a shark and a skull.

It is a temporary fact, because it adorns the scaffolding for the works on the Winter Circus. That is in full transformation. There will be a concert hall, offices and shops, but also catering establishments and terraces. The renovated building must be able to open in 2022."

Location: Lammerstraat, Ghent, Belgium

Mural: S or Sea, Shark, Skull

Humayun's Tomb, Delhi. This tomb, built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal.

It´s only light. It´s only an optic defect. It´s only life.

Here are my best whises for you Fllickr friends. As much as you are able to count bubbles flares in this shot.

Wish you get the balance between the reasonable prudence and the insane panic and fear that politics and his media gives us.

It´s only an advice. It´s only a thought...

Happy new year to all

What do I do when I'm waiting for the Warrriorrrrrssss to come on? This! I was sitting outside enjoying the day and saw a Bewick's Wren land on the cherry blossoms! He was there for maybe a few seconds, called out and the flew away.

Lieutenant's island in Wellfleet, Cape Cod is one of the most beautiful, serene and remote areas that I know of. A fantastic place for a walk!

One time I came here recently, I couldn't make it over to the island! It turns out that the whole area around the small bridge leading to the island was totally under water! It happens often, apparently, simply due to the tide. This time around, no problem. But I was a little concerned about the tide :))

More than 100 years ago, on an unpleasant January Night in 1914, the S/S (Steamship) Lina ran aground at the croatian Island Cres. It was a navigational Error. Today, the amazingly well preserved shipwreck rests in 25 to 52m of depth and is one of the most photographed objects under the surface of the Kvarner Bay.

When the Honorary Deadmore Award arrived in the mail,

Selma knew her place at the Deadmore table was gone.

The award was a snarky way of the family's matriarch Morbid

Deadmore informing you weren't in the inner circle and so,

you were gone and forgotten.

Selma knew there was only one way to make things right,

she was going to have to invite auntie Morbid for some tea..

Anna’s Hummingbirds are mostly green and gray, without any rufous or orange marks on the body. The male's head and throat are covered in iridescent reddish-pink feathers that can look dull brown or gray without direct sunlight.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are a blur of motion as they hover before flowers looking for nectar and insects. Listen for the male's scratchy metallic song and look for him perched above head level in trees and shrubs.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are common in yards, parks, residential streets, eucalyptus groves, riverside woods, savannahs, and coastal scrub. They readily come to hummingbird feeders and flowering plants, including cultivated species in gardens.

Although recently removed from the endangered species list this species depends on people to manage its required breeding habitat of certain aged Jack Pine forests. Cowbird trapping was also part of the management and that was stopped a few seasons ago. Part of the rational for that was the Cowbird population had plummeted in that area and apparently it was thought that was not due to trapping alone but due to a change in the surrounding habitat making it less hospitable to Cowbirds. This season I ran in to a few local birders in other Michigan locations (we've yet to run into another photographer or birder in the Kirtland or other breeding ground areas we go with the exception of the Smithsonian individuals below) who independently made the comment that they were seeing a sharp increase in the Cowbird population this year including one person who lived adjacent to Kirtland habitat.

This year we again ran into a Smithsonian team doing nest monitoring for Cowbird parasitism. As nests were just beginning to be built they didn't have a read yet on this season's parasitism. When WarblerWhisperer goes into this habitat we don't go into the Jack Pine forest but we work around the road. We don't go looking for nests. Time will tell whether Cowbird trapping will need to be resumed.

Dashing through vegetation to catch birds is a dangerous lifestyle. In a study of more than 300 Cooper’s Hawk skeletons, 23 percent showed old, healed-over fractures in the bones of the chest, especially of the furcula, or wishbone.

The Three Ships on Gardom's Edge this morning.

Anna's hummingbird is a small bird species found primarily in western North America, ranging from southern Alaska to Baja California in Mexico. The male has vibrant iridescent feathers on its head and throat, which can change color depending on the angle and lighting. The female has a duller green coloration and lacks the male's flashy head and throat feathers. They are known for their incredible aerial acrobatics and their ability to hover in place while drinking nectar from flowers. Anna's hummingbirds are an important pollinator for many plant species and are a popular species for birdwatchers and backyard bird enthusiasts.

Boot’s Folly, Strines Tower or Sugworth Tower was built in 1927 by Charles Boot the son of the founder of local construction company Henry Boot PLC. Henry Boot & Sons was founded in 1886 and helped by the success of civil building contracts and building camps for the military during the 1914-18 war the company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1919. It’s no surprise therefore that around Sheffield and surrounding areas the family is well known and a number of local builds have been constructed by the company, owned by the family and lived in by the various descendants of Henry Boot.

The tower was built out of the leftover stone from the construction of Bents House nearby. The stone was obtained by the demolition of Bents Farm, Pears House Farm and Nether Holes Farm all of which were apparently demolished because they were polluting local watercourses. Either it was commissioned by Charles Boot to provide work for some of his construction workers during the Great Depression, and/or to allow him to see the church yard at High Bradfield where his wife had been buried the year before (1926). Either way the tower is now derelict and has sadly lost its wood panelled interior and fittings – including a spiral staircase since a cow managed to climb it and get stuck in the tower.

A Green heron soon to be on it's way.
