Thursday, 19 November 2020: our temperature at noon is -12C (windchill -17C). Sunrise is at 8:00 am and sunset is at 4:42 pm. A cloudy day, after more snow overnight.

On 13 November 2020, I needed to get out for a short drive. My last drive had been 10 days ago, on 3 November, when I went north of the city. This time, I drove SE instead, intending on going to the Saskatoon Farm first, for a late breakfast. Though the garden flowers have been over for quite some time now, I always hope there might be a couple of flowers left on the odd greenhouse plant. Glad to find a couple, as colour is always much needed and welcomed at this time of year.

The weather forecast mentioned possible snow flurries in the afternoon, but luckily they never arrived. Instead, the sky showed a bit of drama in different directions. Our Alberta skies can be so amazing and spectacular, and seem to go on forever, stretching across the prairies.

After the Farm, I continued my drive along familiar roads. An unexpected and much enjoyed sighting was a Western Meadowlark, standing at the edge of a gravel road. Happily, it stayed around long enough to get some photos. A few Magpies were more or less the only other birds I happened to notice, other than the dozens of House Sparrows at the Farm. The latter were being watched closely by two of the farm cats. A domestic Goose, seen mingling noisily with the tortoises, was a new addition to the Farm. This wasn't a bird drive, but just a drive to get me out of the house and enjoy a few hours in the countryside.

Saturday, 18 January 2020: our temperature at 10:40 am is -23C (windchill -27C). It may well have been a degree or two colder, earlier. Sunrise is at 8:30 am, sunset at 5:03 pm. We were in a brutal, dangerous deep freeze last weekend and it has continued all this week. Tomorrow, Sunday, is forecast to have a high of -4C (windchill -7C) and, after that, things look like they will improve even more. Temperatures not to mess with at the moment - if you don't absolutely have to go out, be wise and stay home. It amazes me that schools have not closed down. We will all be so relieved when this frigid spell is over. There is now light at the end of the tunnel.

I am adding the description from a previously posted photo taken on the same trip.

"Two days ago, on 16 October 2019, I really did luck out with the weather. Knowing that I am running out of time before the next snowfall happens - we've already had two, one in September and one so far this month - I reckoned it was now or not to make another long drive. The place I wanted to see again was way NE of the city. I had been there only once before, on 29 September 2014, and that was just a brief visit. My daughter and I had arrived there around 4:00 pm after a long day, and I wanted to get back home before it got dark (out of luck), because of poor night vision. Also, having spent the day at two other places plus lots of driving, I was in too much pain to walk around Rowley. I was determined to see everything this visit.

After leaving home at 9:15 am, it took me almost four hours to get there, as I kept stopping to take photos of the clouds and any old barns that I came across. On the return journey, I think I only stopped once and that was to take a few zoomed-in (Focal Length (35mm format) - 1600 mm) photos of a favourite old house. It is so far away, surrounded by rolling hills, that it is barely noticeable. There had been no obvious change over the last five years, which was good to see. It is so decayed that one can't help but wonder how much longer it will remain standing. I could have posted the original image, but I decided to add a touch of filter in post-processing, to bring out a bit more detail. The first time I saw this old house was on 18 July 2016, when my daughter and I did a bit of exploring NE of Calgary. Then, on 17 September 2017, after noticing snowflake icons in the weather forecast for Calgary, I decided I would do a similar drive, but not quite as far this time. It was nice to see it again two days ago.

There is very little information about this house to be found on the Internet, but I will add links to several things I did find, for my own memory and just in case anyone else is interested in the history of this place. So sad to see any old house, barn or shed fall into such decay.

On the drive to my destination, I called in at a small village/hamlet that I had been to with my daughter back in 2014. There was an old building there that was easily photographed from the road, which is what my daughter and I had done. However, for once, I actually knocked on the owner's door and asked if it was OK to photograph her old grain elevator, meaning from the road. However, she very kindly told me to go over to it and take any photos I wanted. This grain elevator is a different style from what one usually thinks of, when 'grain elevator' is mentioned. I like it, and it is quite a fine building.

I am so glad I finally made myself do this drive, despite feeling sick to the stomach at the thought of driving so many kilometres that were unknown to me. Thankfully, I made it without getting lost, without running out of gas, and arriving home at 5:45 pm before it started getting dark. A great day!"

A Zhuang woman walks along a section of the spectacular Longji - Dragons Backbone Rice Terraces at PingAn, Longshen County. The terraces were built by Zhuang and Yao minority people, who still live in the area. Zhuang women are famed for their long black hair and colourful clothing.

Zhuang women’s clothes are decent, simple and in good taste, with blue and black being the usual colors. They traditionally wear a pair of wide-leg pants, with a printed or jacquard woven multicolored towel wrapping the head and an elaborate apron tied to the waist. The upper garment is a navy blue or dark blue right-lapelled jacket with a short collar. The jacket may be front-opening or side-opening, with or without a collar.

This beautiful church is located along Hwy 441 near Norris, Tn. I would imagine it's at least a hundred years old from the architecture. It was moved from an island on the Clinch River in the 1930's to preserve it from the lake that would be formed at the completion of Norris Dam. It has had some additions throughout its history.

Another shot (of the same tree) of this weeks reconnaissance trip to the Posbank, the Veluwe, the Netherlands. Boy did I have a magical morning… Checkout my favorite Oak tree over there! Watching the leaves catching first light made me really happy! Spent waaaay to much time on this tree so there’s bound to end up more of this one in your timeline in the coming weeks or so… ;)

Back in October last year, I knew that if I was going to make myself drive north of the city, I had better do it straight away, before more snow arrived. So, on 28 October 2014, I plucked up courage and drove "to parts unknown". Actually, part of the drive was along familiar roads but the rest was exploring.

I had intended leaving home around 9:00 am, but it ended up being 11:00 am. I had only been driving maybe 40 minutes before I pulled over for the first thing. I couldn't take my eyes off one particular cloud - actually more like a stack of clouds. A car turned off along the gravel road shortly after me, and the young guy with a camera commented about the beautiful lenticular cloud. That is exactly what I had thought it might be, so I was really pleased. We don't get to see them very often.

Continuing my drive north, I managed to get as far as the town of Didsbury before I knew I just had to turn around and head for home, coming back via Water Valley and Grand Valley Rd/Horse Creek Rd. Saw quite a few Magpies, three or four Crows and one Gray Jay, lol. Other than that - oh, and one Hawk perched high up on a power pole along a busy road - I saw no wildlife at all. That was fine, though, as this trip was more about looking for barns. During the seven hours that I was out on the road, I did manage to find several barns that caught my eye. I really liked the one in this photo (barn or homestead?), and it was in such good condition, with a modern roof to protect it. Total driving distance was 322 km.

The temperature here is -10C (windchill -16C) this morning, 10 February 2015. Very light snow is falling, but it's supposed to brighten up later today.

Northamptonshire is a county that few people - other than those who live here - know. From the M1, which passes through it, it appears to be flat and uninteresting. Yet get off the main roads and you will find delightfully rolling countryside, beautiful stone-built villages, many large country houses, wonderful medieval churches and ...horses. There are numerous riding schools and livery stables, while the quiet country lanes are absolutely ideal.
