Achnacarnin is a village on the headland of Point of Stoer in Lairg, Sutherland, within the Scottish local authority area of the Highland Council.

There was an earlier Catholic Church built at Karoola in 1868, but this fine simple plan Carpenter Gothic church dates from 1898.

Karoola is a farming community, made up of simple folk who worked the land tirelessly for generations. They are neither rich nor poor, just people earning an honest living off the land. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church reflects this.

It is a church appropriately set on a hill. The most touching thing I saw was the simple bell tower. This same bell would have rung out for Mass for over 120 years.

the days of gloomy weather in the Kerry sometimes offers beautiful atmospheres

Folks who’ve spent any time around Chester California will recognize the Olsen Barn immediately as it’s a bit of a local icon. It sits in a 100+ acre meadow nestled between the North Fork of the Feather River and Lake Almanor. Some time back the land was purchased by the Feather River Land Trust and, thanks to a very successful fund raising campaign, some restoration work was completed and the area serves as a publicly accessible nature preserve/historical site.

I confess that around 9:15pm on this particular night was the first time I’d ever actually walked out to this wonderful old structure even though I’ve driven by it scores of times and always thought I needed to photograph it. I guess under the core of our little galaxy is a good place to start.

I did process this image in color as well but I rather like this monochrome version with the rustic old structure so dominant in the image.

My title is a mouthful, and it is one way of tipping my hat to the 19th century Tasmanian painters who loved to string together very descriptive phrases for their work. So this scene is as described in the title.

The sunset light looking north on this winter's evening was so full of pastel shades, that I had to take advantage of the scene - especially with that pool of water offering some golden reflections.

Many people are amazed at the way Australian mountains appear blue in the distance - even in the midday sun. I'm told that when eucalyptus oils, dust particles, and water vapour (transpiration) from the leaves combine, as the sunlight hits, it creates an optical illusion of a blue haze.

The technical term for this is "Mie scattering" which occurs when incoming light with shorter wavelengths is preferentially scattered by particles within the atmosphere imparting a blueish colour to any distant objects, including mountains and clouds. It is even more pronounced in low light. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mie_scattering

The Sligachan Old Bridge was built between 1810 and 1818 by engineer Thomas Telford. The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists only following construction of a new road bridge parallel to it on the A87.

It appears an older cow goes behind this tree and emerges as a calf. The tree of eternal youth?

This abandoned old house in White Hills, northern Tasmania, was probably built in the 1840s. It may well have been an inn on the road between Launceston and the east coast.

Weetwood Bridge is a single span stone bridge over the River Till, located near Weetwood Hall, and about a mile and a half north-east of Wooler and 2 miles north-west of Chatton in Northumberland. The bridge is thought to have been built in the 16th century, with alterations in 1775, and also in the 19th century. The bridge is a Grade I listed structure. It is thought probable that the English army, commanded by the Earl of Surrey, crossed the River Till here on the way to Barmoor Castle on the 8th September 1513, the day before the Battle of Flodden. Today the bridge remains in use and is included as part of the Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum.

Xanadu or Shangdu, the idyllic summer capital of Kublai Khan's Mongolian empire. It was first described by Marco Polo in 1275, and made most famous to Westerners in Coleridge's famous poem "Kubla Khan". The opening stanza could describe this infra red scene:

"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan

A stately pleasure-dome decree:

Where Alph, the sacred river, ran

Through caverns measureless to man

Down to a sunless sea.

So twice five miles of fertile ground

With walls and towers were girdled round;

And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,

Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;

And here were forests ancient as the hills,

Enfolding sunny spots of greenery."

Alas, we are still in Tasmania.

I took shot this scene last Fall, and stumbled across it again last weekend. It looked so beautiful with the golden rod.

Active Assignment Weekly - Sunset

AAW - Mar. 7-14, 2022.

Taken at 6:43 p.m., sunset was at 6:40 p.m.

Cropped, increased clarity, reduced noise.

This house was on our hit list and we finally found it at the weekend. I think it may be one of my favourites...Although I have so many. Cannot wait to get back to this spot in the Fall and see the colours popping around it.

Sorry I have been lacking on commenting, I have been so busy with work and getting things ready for our trip back home, time is proving very trick right now. I will try and carve out some at the weekend.
