The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures glitter like jewels in the full sun, then vanish with a zip toward the next nectar source.

I captured this female Ruby-throated Hummingbird at Silver Creek Preserve in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird, immature

I got more photos of this fellow because he spends all his time chasing the others away or sitting at the feeder waiting for another to arrive so he can chase them away. Pretty typical hummingbird drama. With the sun angle just rite the red feathers on his neck really light up.

After about fifteen minutes, this handsome young fellow just spread his belly over his feet. I thought he might go to sleep! But then, the female hummingbird flew around, and he perked right up!!

I am snapping this picture from the den through two panes of glass and thus the distortion. I have tried to sit in the lawn chair next to the swing, but he won't come around when I do!

Just out of site is a hummingbird feeder, licorice mint plants, and a red trumpet flower vine! He is in charge of this area, too! Except the bee thinks it's his domain. Sometimes, the bird and the bee confront each other!

It was cool to capture this little one !!

Taking a break after a fierce fight with others over the feeder.

Finally had a hummer visitor, loading up for the big trip.

She spread her wings and fanned her tail. Just another one of those glorious "moments".

Young male.

St. Louis County (BY) - Ruby-throated Hummingbird

This series is of the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds that took up residence in and around my back yard and garden this past Summer.

I found it amazing how perceptive these little creatures are. They would fly rite up in front of me and hover when I would enter their space . I think to say please leave my space, or hover and feed within a few feet of were I sat or stood, but point a camera in their direction and poof they were gone. Still I have managed to get a few pics of them . here are a few of my favorites.

Sneaky little thing zipped away to the back side of the garden!

I was on the wrong side of the post

I decided to try my hand at Hummingbirds for the first time this season and got this shot ten minutes into it. Sometimes I just get lucky. I'm looking forward to taking many more Hummingbird shots this summer.

See my ruby throat?
