As the new year approaches, I thought it would be time for another forced perspective shot of Ruby, my 1/18th scale model 1930 Alfa Romeo parked by the bird pond in our retirement village. She will be 95 years old in the new year - older than most of the residents in the retirement village here!

Ruby looks great from any angle, but the rear view highlights many little details including the instruments on the dashboard which feature real metal chromed surrounds and actual glass faces over the dials. Those wonderful spoke wheels are all removable by undoing the spinner lock. She has real rubber Pirelli branded tyres (tires), and they even feature an air valve - a tiny detail I have not found on many of my other model cars of this scale.

What really stands out for me is the fact that back then (the 1930s) they had the wisdom to include two spare wheels. I know roads would have been rougher back then and tyre quality would not have been as good as today's modern tyres, but it is a stark reminder that these days we are lucky if we get any spare wheel at all. You might get a space saver if you are lucky - most of which can only be used on the rear - but the current trend is to give you a can of spray (useless if you get a gash in the sidewall of the tyre). All so they can save weight to meet fuel efficiency standards.

Most people are probably lucky enough to go through their motoring lives without ever having a puncture, but somehow, I have managed to have at least 50 since I started driving 45 years ago. Give me a full size spare tyre any day. Space savers and repair kits are only good for around 80km before you must find a dealer and have the tyre properly repaired. Fine if you live in a city and are near dealers who can help, but hopeless for rural folks who may be a long way from any tyre retailer or may be on an overnight journey.

The moral of the story from car manufacturers (and government regulators) today is - "please get a flat tyre in cities or towns only, and preferably during business hours.....we have graciously included this advice for your convenience!"

End of rant - I feel better now! ; )

For Smile on Saturday - What's in a name....

This is my Mum, always known as Ruby though it was in fact her middle name. The name Ruby simply means the gemstone ruby, and also pictured is her mother's engagement ring which is set with three rubies. My middle name is also Ruby... I hated the name when I was a child, it felt very old fashioned, but now it’s cool again and I love it. And it’s nice to have that connection with my Mum.

This is especially poignant as today is the second anniversary of her funeral. Her birth month is August too, she was was nearly 92 when she died, an amazing achievement when you know that she was such a tiny baby she wasn’t expected to survive.

Lots of activity the last few days, warblers, jays, goldfinches, doves and woodpeckers s well as both species of nuthatch.

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny bird that lays a very large clutch of eggs—there can be up to 12 in a single nest. Although the eggs themselves weigh only about a fiftieth of an ounce, an entire clutch can weigh as much as the female herself.

Kinglets are possibly my favorite little bird to take pictures of, because they tend to give lots of chances, but move around enough to keep it challenging.

Female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird perched on a Mango stem.

Seems to be hummingbird season, and on this particular day I saw them sitting down more often than I usually do.

A difficult bird to get a clear shot of and I wanted to get the ruby crown. This is all he would give me for now.

We have had a dozen, or more, hummers in the yard harassing each other.

This one was gauging two feeders so he was busy.

Make sugar water mixtures with about one-quarter cup of sugar per cup of water. Food coloring is unnecessary; table sugar is the best choice. Change the water before it grows cloudy or discolored and remember that during hot weather, sugar water ferments rapidly to produce toxic alcohol.

Took this shot yesterday(?) for my friend Eileen in Scotland.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are eastern North America’s only breeding hummingbird. But in terms of area, this species occupies the largest breeding range of any North American hummingbird.

Prize of the day.."Do the Dooooo "another of nature's wonders...this tiny male Ruby- Crowned Kinglet puts on a little show for me and stays still for a MICRO second to allow a photograph....these little birds are more than twitchy...and can migrate to this part of the continent to breed from as far south as Central America and the southern USA. This one seen and photographed in Lanark County, between the cities of Ottawa and Kingston in Eastern Ontario . This male is exhibiting its Ruby coloured crown that it derives its name from...Canon 5d4 and 600 F.4.0 ii =+ 1.4 Tele Extender tripod mounted, ISO 400 i/800th @ F.6.3

I think this is a Ruby Throated Hummingbird, but I may be wrong. His colors are a little different than pics I found on line of Colorado birds.

He is very small, about 2"-3" long, he landed in a branch just above me and just sat there quietly.

Measurements

Both Sexes

Length: 3.5-4.3 in (9-11 cm)

Weight: 0.2-0.3 oz (5-10 g)

Wingspan: 6.3-7.1 in (16-18 cm)

Ruby-crowned Kinglets in coastal southern Alaska and British Columbia are slightly smaller and darker colored than elsewhere in their range.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets are olive-green birds with a prominent white eye ring and white wingbar. This wingbar contrasts with an adjacent blackish bar in the wing. The “ruby crown” of the male is only occasionally visible.

These are restless, acrobatic birds that move quickly through foliage, typically at lower and middle levels. They flick their wings almost as they go.

These little Birds rarely stop , constantly on the move.

Oh my goodness! This is a lifer for my yard birds. I've only seen one other bird of this species, and only got one shot of it (Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive 2016). This was in the front yard, in God's garden, playing in the sprinklers on the Simpson's Stopper bush. Am I blessed or what! Thank You, Jesus.

This is such a great bird for me (practically homebound). This is at the same time as the Orange-crowned Warbler! Isn't that just something!

Verneuil Ruby on background of Canadian Nephrite Jade

Ruby has a Moh's hardness--scratch resistance of 9

Nephrite Jade has a Moh's hardness of 6.5 but Jade is way tougher than Ruby or Diamond because of it's interlocking crystal growth. That's the difference between scratch resistance vs toughness.
