Originario del caribe mexicano, principalmente en Celestún y Río Lagartos; sin embartgo también habita en Cuba. Se alimenta de crustáceos pequeños en orillas del mar o lagos salados. Vuela en grandes parvadas en busca de alimento. Su pico tiene una forma muy peculiar que le permite colectar el alimento.
