One of the most beautiful hummingbirds I have ever seen. Look at the blue! April 2023

Royal Sunangel - male

Impressive hummingbird found in stunted cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in southeastern Ecuador and northern Peru. Adult male is entirely dark blue and has a moderately long tail. Immature male has some green mixed into the blue plumage, and may have a buffy collar. Female is mostly green with a buffy or whitish collar, belly, and throat. Her tail is blue and shorter than male’s. This species is very localized, and prefers shorter forest and scrub near ridgelines.

Royal Route 66

~~~~~
This is the iconic Roy's neon sign in Amboy, CA, along historic Route 66. Illuminated during the exposure by a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. This is in an upcoming book about abandoned Route 66 at night that will be due out in the spring. Thank you.
The Royal Pavilion is a former royal residence located in Brighton, England. It was built in three stages, beginning in 1787, as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811.
The Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture (RSA) is an independently funded organisation which supports the creation, understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts in Scotland. Based within the Royal Scottish Academy building, the RSA runs a year-round programme of exhibitions, artist opportunities and related educational talks and events which support artists at all stages of their careers. The RSA also holds an extensive collection and archive.
Led by eminent artists and architects, the RSA embodies a wealth of professional experience in Fine Art and Architecture, with many RSA members taking a leading role in higher education and many of the leading cultural institutions in Scotland.
The ‘Scottish Academy’ was founded in 1826 by a group of eleven artists. It was created with the aim of creating an academy of fine arts instructing students at no charge, to present an annual exhibition open to all artists of merit and maintain a library devoted to the fine arts.
The Academy held its first exhibition in 1827 and in 1835 had been granted permission to lease space within the Royal Institution building on the Mound for its annual exhibition. By 1838, the Academy had gained a Royal Charter (and was now known as the Royal Scottish Academy) and it continued to grow in significance and status throughout the nineteenth century, training young artists and looking after its collection for the benefit of students and the wider public.
The founders of the RSA also held a strong desire that Scotland should have a National Gallery of its own and as they continued to expand and place demands on the space within the Royal Institution, it was clear that they required new premises. Therefore, when a new purpose built gallery was designed and constructed in the 1850’s, the Royal Scottish Academy moved in alongside the newly created National Gallery of Scotland (today part of the Scottish National Gallery), hosting its exhibitions within the gallery, as well as having its council room, library and life school within the building. It continued to teach Fine Art in the gallery until the Edinburgh College of Art was formed in 1907.
In 1910, it was decided that the RSA should be transferred back into the Royal Institution Building and be awarded permanent tenancy of office space and the right to hold its annual exhibition within the building. The building then became known as ‘The Royal Scottish Academy’. In return, the RSA gifted ninety-six paintings and sculptures and approximately two-thousand drawings to the National Gallery of Scotland, and are still part of the national collection.
The latest phase in the history of the RSA saw the construction of an underground link between the Royal Scottish Academy Building and the National Gallery of Scotland (as it was then known). Award-winning architects John Miller and Partners rose to the challenge of redeveloping the buildings for modern use.
The Royal Scottish Academy building reopened in 2004 and is now a world-class exhibition space, while the underground Gardens Level houses a range of visitor facilities and education spaces. The Royal Scottish Academy Building now plays host to a variety of exhibitions programmed by the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture, and others.
The Royal Crescent is a row of 30 terraced houses laid out in a sweeping crescent in the city of Bath, England. Designed by the architect John Wood, the Younger, and built between 1767 and 1774, it is among the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the United Kingdom and is a Grade I listed building. Although some changes have been made to the various interiors over the years, the Georgian stone facade remains much as it was when first built.
Many notable people have either lived or stayed in the Royal Crescent since it was built over 240 years ago, and some are commemorated on special plaques attached to the relevant buildings. Of the crescent's 30 townhouses, 10 are still full-size townhouses; 18 have been split into flats of various sizes; one is the No. 1 Royal Crescent museum, and The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, at the centre of the crescent, is made up of Nos. 16 and No.15.
The Royal Crescent is close to Victoria Park and linked via Brock Street to The Circus which had been designed by John Wood, the Elder.
Royal Mail House, a Grade II listed Victorian building, was originally Radley’s Hotel, dating back to the 1840s when George Radley was the owner. The hotel closed in 1907 and the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which was established in 1840, occupied the building until 1932 when it was taken over by Royal Mail Lines. The building now has office space and a café.
Royal spoonbill.
In the summer of 2008/9, two pairs of Royal spoonbills bred successfully at the Jerrabomberra wetlands. The tree they chose was directly in front of one of the hides, and before long, the hides were as busy as a railway station with observers. This morning I was lucky enough to get here very early, and while things were quiet, this adult just wandered past and looked at me.
I find these dark images somewhat difficult to make. Finding a balance between the dark and the light spots is a very delicate business. I tend to make them too dark. Maybe it's my eyesight. I do need new glasses.
The title "The Royal Guardsman" refers to a book cover mock-up I made of this earlier. It's the name of this particular white N-1 Starfighter variation.
This is the flower bud of the Royal Star Magnolia tree in my backyard... Remember I had that huge cedar removed and left the stump but my idea for it didn't work out so last spring I had it dug out and this beautiful little Magnolia put in ... At it's full growth should be about 20' by 20' so I don't have to worry about it doing damage to the house in a wind storm and can also enjoy the beautiful flowers in the spring..
With the Royal parks if you can get the right condition to can get a vast array of images playing with the light and mist, here is a selection of images I have taken over the last October.
