ODT: 12/16/2012: Glowing.

One of the things that makes Christmas special around here is when the Sea World tower is strung with lights to make it look like a tree. This very tall tower stands out like a beacon and can be seen for miles.

In Round 15 of Get Pushed I am paired with Jason Manion.

His challenge to me was:

"... since it's Christmas and all, is that you try to create a photograph depicting something that makes Christmas special to you, or something special you do. .............My thought would be that I'd like to see something from a bit bigger of a perspective. Most of your stuff seems to be more macro or smaller objects."

He is right. I take quite a lot of smaller things and macros. So I am trying to think bigger.

There are so many things that make Christmas special to me.

1. Spending the holiday with family. (But this year we will not be having a big family Christmas)

2. The food and the festive meals, of course.

3. The Cards and being in touch with friends and family that you don't see on a regular basis.

4. The Christmas trees, particuarly the big outdoor ones.

5. The spirit of giving.

This is one of the two shots I am submitting for the challenge that look at it with a bigger perspective as challenged. But I have depicted some more, a couple of them closeups, to be seen below.

Thanks for the Challenge, Jason. You definitely got me out of the house and thinking bigger.

So I am working on depicting a couple of these things.

Alrighty then - for round 15, I was paired up with the immensely talented Bhawi. For someone who's only been into photography for a couple years, she's done quite well! Her challenge to me was to get in touch with my softer, feminine side. "This doesn't necessarily mean that I want you to go out shooting flowers though. I quite like the idea of shooting something white on white, totally devoid of colour yet not BW either. Or if your really can't stay away from colour, make it pale/pastel."

Well anyone who's been following me knows that I love colors (and colours too!) and saturation and HDR and bold and brash photography. But, this is a challenge and we are pushed to step out of our comfort zone and try something different! So, I went with the "white on white" idea (which isn't as easy as it sounds! ). I asked a friend if she wanted to wear her wedding dress again or knew of someone who did. Apparently I asked the right person, because my friend Cheryl from work owns an incredible amount of white clothing. We didn't even get to the wedding dress, as I think we captured some great shots as it is! (see more here!)

I have to say that the hardest part was getting the lighting right. My lights definitely aren't powerful enough and I had to fix things a bit in post to get rid of the backdrop. I think I need to get another flash unit too, because one just isn't enough.

So there you have it Bhawi! My feminine side with nod toward your British-ness! I hope you like it and I hope I've met your push! Thanks for a fun assignment!

Happy New Year everyone - I look forward to your challenges in 2012!!!
