A dedication to Edvard Munch's "The Scream" painting as prescribed by Skinbops' round 15 'Get Pushed' challenge: "My challenge to you is to recreate a painting that people instantly recognise. How you carry it out is entirely up to you but the bottom line is it must be faithful/recognisable to the original painting."
What an incredible challenge! I knew exactly which painting to recreate the moment I read Skinbop's message, and who to have as the subject. My dramatic and hairless-because-of-the-Army son was back home on leave so he was a most perfect choice for the model (thanks for supporting my hobby once again, Josh!:) We had a lot of fun reproducing the shot while dodging raindrops and looking out for resident gators.
The post processing was an adventure in different programs. I downloaded a trial of Corel Painter 12 for this project to see how I'd like the program. I do really like Painter 12 and think it would be a blast to create illustrations with but it seems a bit pricey for me right now. Meanwhile, I'll try to find something else to improvise with for this purpose of coloring photographs (I'm open to suggestions ....can this be done in Elements?).
Thanks to the amazing and talented Skinbops for thinking this one up for me. It was such a pleasure looking through his body of work to issue my challenge for him, which he nailed completely! :)
Our Daily Challenge "Money Can't Buy...(Sanity)"
The last round of Get Pushed for 2011 had me paired with the lovely Laurie2123 and her challenge to:
illustrate through your photography your New Year’s resolution, or a resolution you refuse to make, or your wish for the New Year.
So I thought back to a year ago, having just finished a 365 and ready to find out what was waiting on the other side of the daily madness that had become such a big part of the way I saw each day. If 2010 was about discovering my camera and letting it change the way I view the world, 2011 was about trying new things and challenging myself in new directions. It wasn't with the same ferocious drive, but it was pictures that felt true to me and hopefully showed how I've grown. In recent months I lost some of my steam as other commitments took over, but I'm so grateful for the groups and wonderful Flickr friends that continually make this place the source of inspiration and community that it is. It's your own photo journeys that keep me coming back and looking to grow further.
So cheers to the new year. To moving forward. To seizing opportunities. To finding the playful side again; rejoining the game and letting go of some of that over-thinking that has a habit of getting in the way of the natural flow of moves. And since I started the year with a Cliche Saturday, I can't think of a better way to end it. It's been too long since I jumped in and played along on the weekend and that's one resolution that I can happily make.
HCS and thank you again Laurie for your inspirational challenge and more importantly, the inspirational words that had me return to GO.
Wishing you all a wonderful New Year and looking forward to seeing where it takes you.

One of the things that makes Christmas special to me is the wonderful Christmas food with family and friends.
In Round 15 of Get Pushed I am paired with Jason Manion.
His challenge to me was:
"... since it's Christmas and all, is that you try to create a photograph depicting something that makes Christmas special to you, or something special you do. .............My thought would be that I'd like to see something from a bit bigger of a perspective. Most of your stuff seems to be more macro or smaller objects."
He is right. I take quite a lot of smaller things and macros. So I am trying to think bigger.
There are so many things that make Christmas special to me.
1. Spending the holiday with family. (But this year we will not be having a big family Christmas)
2. The food and the festive meals, of course.
3. The Cards and being in touch with friends and family that you don't see on a regular basis.
4. The Christmas trees, particuarly the big outdoor ones.
5. The spirit of giving.
I am working on depicting some of these.
I was paired with one of my favorite flickrites, the kick ass, Holly Ferocious. She gave me this challenge;
"I was thinking that given your heritage & locale, it would be cool if you could artfully capture an interesting east-west juxtaposition. "
I tried a few different things and finally settled on this as my favorite image for the challenge. Eastern bar, western band. :)

liked the lighting on this one............
round 15 of the get pushed group has my partner, stuart, suggesting that i take pics of people:
Looking through your photostream, nearly all your photos are of things. So I think my push for you is going to be very simple: set up a shot of somebody, experimenting with lighting. If you can't find anybody to be your model, do a self-portrait, but I'd prefer it to be of somebody else.
Have fun!
Stuart
was despairing over not having a gold pic from yesterday and.......duh, her hair is golden (20/31)
scavchal #19-- traditions..... she came home for christmas, which is my christmas present :)
ODT shine
ODT happiness (the light of my life :)
One of the things that makes Christmas special to me is the Christmas trees, particuarly the big outdoor ones. There are so many of them all over the world and it is heartwarming to think of people gathering around them to share goodwill and happiness. This is the one outside the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. The Museum of Man tower can be seen in the back ground. I liked they way they mirrored each others shapes. I did not know why the tree was pink and white this year, until I saw the performance of "The Grinch." The tree matches the costumes and set. For the last few years the Old Globe has presented a production of "The Grinch" over the Holidays.

This is one of the two shots I am submitting for the challenge that look at it with a bigger pespective as challenged. But I have depicted some more, a couple of them closeups, to be seen below.
Thanks for the challenge, Jason. You definitely got me out of the house and thinking bigger.

This triptych is my answer to the pushes by Bella Blue Star and Nikkonsnapper who in separate challenges pushed me in a similar way in the rolling challenge and round 15 of the Get Pushed group respectively.
"Bella" told me to photograph a stranger on the streets of Amsterdam. A mixture of street and portraiture. B&W or Colour.
"Nikon snapper" said: I had a brief look at your photostream and notice you have a G12. As this is an ideal street camera, I would like you to take a black and white candid street shot of a person (stranger). I don't want a long range shot, something nice and close.
I have also put one of my first attempts at this type of photography in my photostream with a bit more explanation of my quick development during my trip down town (Amsterdam). I chose the Dam square as it is never empty, not even on new year's day. The second reason to go here is the high concentration of people with cameras, so I would not stand out (easy option for candid shots).
After a while I found my method: just ask the people sitting around if I could photograph them. and everyone I asked was OK with that (from the type of 3-4m distance I was at). When I got home I noticed a possibility to do a theme: couples.
Nikkonsnapper, I hope it is close enough. I still think I need to get closer to the point that I can get a head shot in at 50mm lens distance. However I will need to do a lot more practice to get so comfortable in entering people's personal space and talking to total strangers. Not there yet...
On the technical side: all shots cropped (not just to square) I desaturated the middle shot except for the red.
All 2 pictures taken with the G12 at ISO 400-800 f/4 and around 1/40.
I sorted the 3 shots in order to show me getting closer

Location: Dam square Amsterdam, tourist central
Reason: a couple (!) of pushes.
This shot is one of my first attempts answer to the pushes in the Get Pushed group by Bella Blue Star and Nikkonsnapper who in separate challenges pushed me in a similar way to do sreet portraits in the rolling challenge and round 15 respectively.
They were right in not seeing any street photography in my stream. It is something I find hard to do. I have had a view confrontations, close to getting physical in a case where I shot an overview with an SLR that attracted to much attention.
So here I went to face my fears :-) Most of the shots I had were like this one, candid shots of people half turned away or busy taking their own pictures, watching street performers (like the group of tourists to the right).
As I was told to get in close and the fact that this is not quite a portrait I was not quite happy to call it quits and went on ... and started shooting pictures after asking. But did quite some walking in between the shots, coming back to the same site a few times seeing new people hanging around.
My final result is a series of shots of people that I asked.
I still think I need to get closer to the point that I can get a head shot in at 50mm lens distance. However I will need to do a lot more practice to get so comfortable in entering people's personal space and talking to total strangers. Not there yet...
