4th Annual All Emergency Vehicles Show - XXX Rootbeer Drive In

he calls Root Beer "Luke Beer" - wonder what he'll call Rolling Rock or Fat Tire? when he's 35 that is.

Been jonesing for a rootbeer float lately. The ice cream is homemade (I used an Alton Brown recipe cuz he's my hero) and I stuck that mug in the freezer for a bit before making this one.

Strobist info and setup:

mug is sitting on a piece of Plexiglass, set on top of a cardboard box lined with black velvet to kill light. Tried to clean the plexi as best I could before the shot to limit amount of work done in post. Clone stamped and brushed away the horizon lines for the plexi in Photoshop and burned the reflected image on the bottom a bit, which de-emphasized that portion of the frame a bit and ended up killing a lot of the imperfections in the plexi as well. Two birds with one stone!

2 flashes to either side and slightly in front, shot through DIY strip boxes made from cutting an Amazon.com box in half, taping it back together, and lining the inside with aluminum tape. Diffused using the waxy paper I peeled the tape off of because I was too sick and tired to get up, throw it away, and find some other form of diffusion material.

ABR800 from underneath, tripped optically by resting it on a scrap of foil to catch and bounce the light into its slave eye.

This one isn't massively relevant to my day today, but I did eat one, so it counts!

This is one from a bag of rather fabulous sweets that Sue and Matt brought back from a recentish trip to Yorkshire.

The flavour is a bit odd...rootbeer!

Yes, it does taste like antiseptic and yes, I do love 'em!

i was thrilled when i saw pop shoppe singles for sale at IGA. when i was a kid my grandpa would get flats of rootbeer and orange soda for the kids to have at christmas time. such great memories!

8th Annual Burgers and BMWs meet @Issaquah, Washington.

This past Sunday was the Pacific Northwests annual XXX Rootbeer GTG, like every other year the cars were plentiful, the food is great, and the parkinglot was filled with many familiar faces.

A modern A&W drive-in, where car hops bring your food, on a tray, that hangs off the drivers window!

In 1919, at a parade honoring returning World War I veterans in Lodi, California, Roy Allen set up a roadside drink stand to offer a new thick and creamy drink, root beer. His creation was such a success, he decided to take on a partner, Frank Wright. In 1922, Allen and Wright combined their initials to name the beverage A&W Root Beer.

Thus, in the 1920's, the original drive-in concept began. Fast forward to the 1950's, and I remember setting in the back seat of my uncle's '56 Chevy, ordering Root Beer Floats at the local A&W drive in. Car Hops? Yes indeed! Our local A&W closed down in the 80's; it lost favor to McDonalds and other fast food joints as time passed them up.

Read the full story, it's a great read, and see how franchise restaurants and drive-ins came way before McDonald Brothers or Ray Kroc
