"Carlton" room divider, 1981
Ettore Sottsass (Italian, born Austria, 1917)
Designer; Memphis s.r.l
Wood, plastic laminate
Sottsass is not only one of the most influential designers of the latter half of the twentieth century but also one of the most paradoxical. While he has had a successful career producing industrial designs for the mainstream corporation Olivetti, for everything from typewriters and computers to office landscapes, he has also created strikingly unconventional consumer-oriented objects that challenge the bourgeois audience at which they are aimed to reassess its assumptions of the limits of good taste.
Between 1981 and 1988, Sottsass and a small international group of like-minded designers who called themselves Memphis created nonconformist furniture. The totemic "Carlton" room divider is an outstanding example of his Memphis designs. Although intended for a luxury market and of fine workmanship, it is made of cheap plastic laminates rather than fine woods. The vivid colors and seemingly random interplay of solids and voids suggest avant-garde painting and sculpture. Yet, typical of Sottsass, underlying the surface brilliance is an entirely logical structural system, of real and implied equilateral triangles.

Curved backrest and seat give ergonomic comfort. Simply put...this bad ass is set up for a few hours of double fisting scotch, while you spin yarns about just how awesome you really are. Don't worry, I am still listening......right????
COurtesy of hubby for a Mother's Day gift, he added another section to my vintage shabby room divider made from old chippy doors.

Bar height. ***UPDATE 8/3/12 The number is now reduced to three as Margaret is taking two back to Alabama with her. A little mid century love which will always make her think of her time in Chicago. Good stuff.
This is what's on the other side of the bedroom. There's another bedroom, a bath and this small window seat area. I'm not done with this area yet so it's pretty bare... it needs a rug on the floor and some art on the wall to warm it up.
A ward at the former Quarry Hospital, The Quarry Hospital Museum - The pioneering Dinorwig Quarry Hospital is now a museum housing some of the original equipment from the 1800's. Restored Ward and Operating Theatre, original X-Ray Machine and other bits of gruesome medical equipment, park related exhibitions and a Mortuary! This old hospital in Llanberis was for the men who worked at the Dinorwig Quarry in the 19th and 20th centuries. The idea was to have a hospital close to their place of work so they could get back to work as soon as possible after they received treatment. There were over 3,000 workers in the Dinorwig quarry and there were a lot of accidents - broken bones, lost fingers, crush injuries and worse. The Dinorwig hospital remained until the coming of the NHS in the 1950s.
The athletic facility shown here was too large for the event. Pipe & Drape was used to make the room smaller.
The drape is parted in the back of the photo where the entrance is. This was connected by a pipe & drape chute to the main entrance of the gym completing the illusion of a small room.
In this photo, drape was used left and right of the main stage. A third run was placed to the rear of the stage which hid the access stairs. A fourth run was used on the balcony behind the stage to get a more uniform look and to block the utilitarian wall.
In front of the stage drape was used to dress up the barricades.

Debbie traded me these amazing dolls that have been on my wish list for ages! They were perfect for the photos for my Etsy listing. Thanks Debbie!
The planter/water feature is a piece I made for a mid century modern diorama that I hope to finish in this decade. ;)
The sofa and chairs belonged to my older sister. They were included with a three room Barbie house made for her in 1950's. I added the legs, but otherwise, they are just as they were all those years ago. :)
The chairs don't have backs, though, and I obviously don't have that fabric, so I'm going to have to get creative with them unless I only place them with the backs to the wall. Hmmm...
***MAJOR UPDATE***After almost 100 emails from all over the country from Palm Springs to North Carolina inquiring about this chair, all from one simple pic earlier with THIS chair semi hidden in the background (I would get 2-5 a week, every week for months), I have finally decided to pass this beauty along to a couple that simply HAD to have this chair, and their compelling story cinched the deal. Thank you so much Larry and Pamela--Send pics when this supermodel gets her new dress! 5/29/12
Perfectly suited for almost any use, this piece offers ample storage in a small footprint. You will always have a functional space for this timeless beauty.
This mid century modern darling features notable Scandinavian styling. Organic legs inspired by the shape of antelope and deer.
