CP 420 glides through the rock cut at Romford with a ES44AC and a pair of 40s lifted from Sudbury. Always wanted to shoot this location and definitely didn't think this is what it'd look like given I'd never seen shots here prior.
CP 420 rockets thru Romford Jct shortly after leaving Sudbury under the cover of darkness. The unfortunately now defunct searchlights still standing proud.
421 charges through Romford crossing over from the Parry Sound Sub to the Cartier Sub, officially changing direction from northbound to westbound at this point. They're passing the aging infrastructure and multiple variations of searchlights still guarding what was once a bustling junction, though with the OVR now operating the Cartier Sub between Romford and North Bay, defunct searchlights such as 724-2 (frame left) can still be found in a number of places making for an interesting scene here.
RS18's were pretty rare on CP's northern Ontario corridor by the time I shot this on February 20, 1992.Catching a trio leading an SD 0n 481 was really out of the ordinary. 1831, 1822, 1808 and 5568 pay an early afternoon visit to Romford.
With clear signals over the junction where the CP Toronto line splits with the Montreal line and over the CN diamond beyond the junction CP Bigs 4708, 4736 along with a dead 4729 get down to business with St. Luc bound train 936. June 13, 1993.
Backlit birches glow in the late afternoon sun as 119 knocks down the approach signal to Romford, navigating the rugged Canadian Shield and about to split the massive rock cut in the prior photo - MP 119 Parry Sound Subdivision.
During one of very few sunny patches of the day in the Greater Sudbury Area, OVR train 431 from North Bay knocks down a clear to stop signal at the Romford searchlights located at mile 72 of the CP Cartier Sub with ex-CN GP40-2LW RLK 3029 in the lead.
Romford is quite a significant junction, as the south track becomes the Parry Sound Sub down to Mactier and eventually Toronto, while the Cartier Sub on the north track runs to North Bay and continues into the now-abandoned Chalk River Sub toward Smith’s Falls and eventually Montreal. Nowadays, the OVR’s tri-weekly North Bay/Sudbury transfer is the only train to use the Cartier Sub between mile 0 & 62, as CP began to direct all of their Montreal traffic through Toronto around 2010 I believe. Much more history can be read up on this online, but that is a brief summary for you!
OVR 431 knocks down the signals at Romford with a decent sized freight for CP in Sudbury, this was one of must do bucket list shots while in town and it nearly almost didn't come to fruition with a slow ass 104 screwing around on the South and with some cirrus clouds eating up the sun.
OVR 431 hits the CP Cartier Sub with a long train of 70+ cars. The crew had the trio of EMDs really wound up, trying to get up to the new, higher top speed.
A line-up of buses in Romford with, from left, Arriva's DW251 on the 175 to Dagenham, Stagecoach's 82102 and 19735 on the 247 to Barkingside and the 496 to Romford, Queen's Hospital and Go-Ahead's LT309 on the 5 to Romford Market.
Another pub gone, this one would have had a bit of trade from the Romford greyhound track across the road when things were better !.
Reports in the news indicate that this 19th century pub is due to be converted into 24 apartments by a property developer !.
I posted a going away shot of this train yesterday. 481 arrives at Romford on February 21, 1992 with 4702 and 4726 leading the heavy western Canada bound freight into Sudbury right near sunset. Power would be added at Sudbury but it would be dark before departure.
My rendition of the 12 days of Christmas, with references to the snowy flashback photos above!
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish a (belated) MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of my followers and everyone else who has helped me get to where I am now.
This photo was taken in February of this year, when heavy snow caused multiple buses to bunch together on the 248.
Some pictures taken by the late Michael Cleary. I will be uploading any I think may be of interest. None were catalogued. Where I know the approximate date I will state it. Similarly I will give the location. That leading bus was an ex-Tayside Ailsa.

1973 Ford Cortina XL 1600 4-door.
Anglia Car Auctions, King's Lynn -
"Chassis number: BABFNA11002. Both family-owned and garaged from new, according to the vendor, this 1973 Ford Cortina MkIII 1600 XL shows just three registered keepers overall on its V5C. It was registered in August 1973 and is now showing circa 62,000 miles on its odometer. As an historic vehicle, the Cortina is exempt from MoT testing; there's no record of it having had one back to 2005, when online MoT records began; however, it has only recently been put back on the road after being unused for many years. Recent work has included new tyres, brake calipers, master cylinder and wheel cylinders. The vendor describes the interior as near perfect, with its front seats protected by covers. The car is also reported as running well, with no known issues. The only documentation with the Cortina is its V5C."
Estimate: £4000 to £6000. Sold for £4968 including premium.

T1 in an eerily quiet Romford.
Summer 1988.
After a day of chasing HCRY, I was winding down the day at Romford. The goal was to try and time a shot of the eastbound Falconbridge job just after sunset so I could get a usable shot.
I was pleasantly surprised with this westbound stack train instead, seen here splitting the searchlights at Romford, where the Parry Sound sub merges with the Cartier.
Little did I know, the Falconbridge job is just cresting the curve over my left shoulder. You can see their medium-approach (I think? Please correct me) signal on the North. Just as the stack train power past me I looked over to see the pair of SD60's fly past me behind the stacks. To add insult to injury, they were light power with the SD60M trailing, in perfect sun, passed searchlights.... I have yet to recover from this.

Clearly this operator had the contract to operate route 500 to Harlow on Sunday.
A burst water main blocked all access to Bow bus garage for double deckers, As not enough buses were out for the daytime, some buses were borrowed from other garages to allow a near-normal service to run.
17978 was borrowed from Romford and they ended up sending a bus that had stickers for Route 247!
