Unfortunately we came at a very busy time so the very friendly owner/manager was unable to show us around. I will be going back in a week or two at a better time when I can get an in-depth tour. Enjoy the classic WHITE Rolloff with the blue CA plates, as well as a roaring Volvo/Wittke I was unaware they had.

Also ran into Luis, the great driver I filmed in 34, the Maxon in West LA last summer. Luis told me how he lost all the stops out there and will be retiring soon. It was nice that we recognized each other and got to catch up.

While I was on a vacation in Hawaii, I decided to take a trip to Rolloffs Hawaii on my last night in the Aloha state. At the time Rolloffs was the second largest Solid Waste company in Oahu behind Honolulu Disposal. While at the yard I saw equipment from The KNG Group, including a ex Amrep demo ASL still in KNG colors. In 2010 Rolloffs acquired The KNG Group which at the time was the third largest Solid Waste company in Oahu. I knew KNG had the residential contact for the Military bases in Oahu so I asked Doug from Rolloffs about that and he informed me Rolloffs runs Curotto Cans there. Unfortunately I had to be at the airport the next morning or else I would have filmed a video of Rolloffs Curotto Cans on route.

Big Thank you to Doug for letting me take pictures of Rolloffs awesome fleet, I had a great time at the yard.

Swopes is a small family run scrap yard out in the sticks of East Berlin, PA. This truck runs around a lot to big demolition jobs in the city and to farms hauling all types of scrap items.

Some brand new “extra” chassis that are ready to have either a RL body or Rolloff mounted if needed.

Mack Granite rolloff probably somewhere around Irvine; feel free to correct me, Aaron.

Here is one of the EZ Street 160 Gallon bins. One of the 100s or 1000s at this beach. This bin is missing wheels as you can see

They collect at the beach between 12-6AM two times a week ( I don’t know what days) they come by with a rolloff, a Front Loader, and to get the EZ street cans off the sand, the pick them up with a pickup truck and set them on the pathway. And they mix the “recycle” and trash (EZ street cans) in the same truck because people are failing at recycling here. I’m guessing a ZR collects this load, but I’m not sure.

Rainbow use to collect at this particular beach prior.

Here it is! The ex LA Peterbilt American Vehicles Incorporated (AVI) from Superior Sanitations. Before Superior Sanitation acquired the AVI, another company Hawaiian Roll Off (not Rolloffs Hawaii) in Kona, purchased the AVI and an ex SCD Amrep Octo for their commercial route. Hawaiian Roll Off sold those routes and trucks to Superior Sanitation but remain in business for Roll Offs. The AVI is still in Hawaiian Roll Off colors when the video was filmed. I was informed by the owner Mike, that they purchased paint for the AVI and it will be repainted in Superior Sanitation colors soon.

I found the AVI on its cardboard route in Kona. The driver, Rich, could not have been more friendly and he told me many stories about the AVI. First, he told me how the AVI is everyones favorite truck and how it is tough, fast and rarely ever has any problems. Rich went on to tell me how the owner Mike, made some modifications to the AVI. First, he raised the cab cover so when they service the Peterbilt, they do not have to raise the AVI body. The AVI also used to be a stand up truck with right hand drive, so they took a Peterbilt door off another truck and modified the right hand side with a new seat and door to make it easier and safer for the helper. Rich even called Mike to tell him about me and they invited me to their yard. This AVI is incredibly loud, sounds great and it has a classic early 90's truck sound, especially in regards to the brakes and revving. I made sure to zoom in on the LA green bleeding out, especially the inside of the hopper that was never painted. Rich gave the AVI some pretty loud revs in this video and you will see this truck scream in part 2!

I hope everyone enjoys this video. There will be a part 2 with a major surprise in regards to the AVI and something that nobody has recorded an AVI doing. If anyone travels to Kona and wants to find the AVI, I strongly encourage you to. When I filmed the AVI it worked Mondays and Thursdays and was a spare the rest of the week.

That brief clip at the beginning was at a rare black sand beach. This black sand beach with turtles is located at Punalu'u black sand beach park.

Thank you Superior Sanitation, Rich, the helper, and the owner Mike. Superior Sanitation is a great company and on top of that Mike and all the drivers are incredibly friendly.

I'll try posting something new each week. Once I'm done judging, editing, and promoting "Rolloff" within the next month, I'll start taking new pictures! Oh, and when work is less hectic, of course.

If you want to keep in touch with me, feel free to add me on....

International Transtar II and Pete 362

This morning, we had 3 shots in mind: somewhere near where the deadhead got underway, Iowa City, and Moscow. For the Iowa City shot, we considered the in-town crossing of the Iowa River, but passed since we thought a that early hour, the sun wouldn't be be very good for a side angle shot from the south. We had kind of pre-scouted and saw that there was an old Rock Island depot just east of there. But, when we arrived there were two problems: 1) The depot was kind of in the shadows of other building/trees and 2) There was a giant rolloff dumpster in the middle of the scene f-ing things up and make any kind of shot (depot in the shade aside) impossible.

Running out of time, we settled for the first crossing east of the Iowa River, which had a somewhat decent curve to it...and the positive of straight down the pipe sun. But, it turns out that the light was pretty good for the Iowa River shot and while the light was great here, the scene was pretty damn boring so, it's hard to put this one down as a "win" for me.

The Roll-0n Roll-off MV Troubridge, a deep sea passenger and vehicle ferry, was built to replace SS Karatta, serving the Adelaide, Kingscote, Port Lincoln coastal run. Services began in 1961.

She was owned by the South Australian Steamship Company 1961–1977, then R W Miller and the South Australian Government.

The large purpose designed gantry on the wharf was constructed to allow cars and cargo carriers to drive straight on and off the ship.

“Troubridge” ceased operating in June 1987, when she was replaced by the “Island Seaway”. The same gantries were used by the new vessel proved unreliable and was retired in 1995.

After various subsequent owners she was scrapped in Turkey in 2004.
