While I was on a vacation in Hawaii, I decided to take a trip to Rolloffs Hawaii on my last night in the Aloha state. At the time Rolloffs was the second largest Solid Waste company in Oahu behind Honolulu Disposal. While at the yard I saw equipment from The KNG Group, including a ex Amrep demo ASL still in KNG colors. In 2010 Rolloffs acquired The KNG Group which at the time was the third largest Solid Waste company in Oahu. I knew KNG had the residential contact for the Military bases in Oahu so I asked Doug from Rolloffs about that and he informed me Rolloffs runs Curotto Cans there. Unfortunately I had to be at the airport the next morning or else I would have filmed a video of Rolloffs Curotto Cans on route.
Big Thank you to Doug for letting me take pictures of Rolloffs awesome fleet, I had a great time at the yard.

Here it is! The ex LA Peterbilt American Vehicles Incorporated (AVI) from Superior Sanitations. Before Superior Sanitation acquired the AVI, another company Hawaiian Roll Off (not Rolloffs Hawaii) in Kona, purchased the AVI and an ex SCD Amrep Octo for their commercial route. Hawaiian Roll Off sold those routes and trucks to Superior Sanitation but remain in business for Roll Offs. The AVI is still in Hawaiian Roll Off colors when the video was filmed. I was informed by the owner Mike, that they purchased paint for the AVI and it will be repainted in Superior Sanitation colors soon.
I found the AVI on its cardboard route in Kona. The driver, Rich, could not have been more friendly and he told me many stories about the AVI. First, he told me how the AVI is everyones favorite truck and how it is tough, fast and rarely ever has any problems. Rich went on to tell me how the owner Mike, made some modifications to the AVI. First, he raised the cab cover so when they service the Peterbilt, they do not have to raise the AVI body. The AVI also used to be a stand up truck with right hand drive, so they took a Peterbilt door off another truck and modified the right hand side with a new seat and door to make it easier and safer for the helper. Rich even called Mike to tell him about me and they invited me to their yard. This AVI is incredibly loud, sounds great and it has a classic early 90's truck sound, especially in regards to the brakes and revving. I made sure to zoom in on the LA green bleeding out, especially the inside of the hopper that was never painted. Rich gave the AVI some pretty loud revs in this video and you will see this truck scream in part 2!
I hope everyone enjoys this video. There will be a part 2 with a major surprise in regards to the AVI and something that nobody has recorded an AVI doing. If anyone travels to Kona and wants to find the AVI, I strongly encourage you to. When I filmed the AVI it worked Mondays and Thursdays and was a spare the rest of the week.
That brief clip at the beginning was at a rare black sand beach. This black sand beach with turtles is located at Punalu'u black sand beach park.
Thank you Superior Sanitation, Rich, the helper, and the owner Mike. Superior Sanitation is a great company and on top of that Mike and all the drivers are incredibly friendly.

Direct Source is a small roll-off business located in Spring Grove, Illinois. This unit was seen on a rainy Friday morning swapping a 20 yard container at a house that was being renovated. The Freightliner Columbia is normally seen as a long haul tractor, but can occasionally be spotted being used for other applications as seen here.

Thanks to the incredible dynamic of Fuji 's Super CCD sensor, I was able to recover the blown highlights when I shot at the sun behind the clouds last Saturday in Alviso. The Fuji S5 Pro is a lot of fun to shoot with despite its relatively low resolution and sluggishness in operation. Paired with a decent Nikkor glass, it 's quite capable to do some magic with highly contrasty scenes like this. It has a lot more headroom than any other digital cameras that I have come across. The rolloff from the highlights is just like negative film.

Unfortunately we came at a very busy time so the very friendly owner/manager was unable to show us around. I will be going back in a week or two at a better time when I can get an in-depth tour. Enjoy the classic WHITE Rolloff with the blue CA plates, as well as a roaring Volvo/Wittke I was unaware they had.
Also ran into Luis, the great driver I filmed in 34, the Maxon in West LA last summer. Luis told me how he lost all the stops out there and will be retiring soon. It was nice that we recognized each other and got to catch up.

Great to see and meet so many American Friends, that was the highlight of the day. Throw in a couple of Canadians as well.

This Mack RD originally worked out of Waste Management's Elgin hauling operation that is now closed. It isn't uncommon for former Elgin units to still have "Elgin, IL" printed on the door, or have an "E" next to its number, as seen here. This truck, as well as other former Elgin units, now operates out of Batavia.
This unit was one of many Waste Management roll offs hauling leaves in Elgin this year.

The Roll-0n Roll-off MV Troubridge, a deep sea passenger and vehicle ferry, was built to replace SS Karatta, serving the Adelaide, Kingscote, Port Lincoln coastal run. Services began in 1961.
She was owned by the South Australian Steamship Company 1961–1977, then R W Miller and the South Australian Government.
The large purpose designed gantry on the wharf was constructed to allow cars and cargo carriers to drive straight on and off the ship.
“Troubridge” ceased operating in June 1987, when she was replaced by the “Island Seaway”. The same gantries were used by the new vessel proved unreliable and was retired in 1995.
After various subsequent owners she was scrapped in Turkey in 2004.
While while I was at a truck shop my dad frequents, Another one of AVCO's full size Petes showed up to exchange rolloffs. unfortunately, the area where the exchange was happening was a work area for BNSF in which you needed to check in with security before entering, and I wasn't up for that.
At least I got a nice photo.
