bad day.

i'm very disappointed in people today.

so, i'm hanging out with the pets right now.

trying to find a little sanctuary and inspiration in their company.

take clementine, for example.

this is how i found her about an hour ago.

just sitting there, so peaceful and happy.

in "her" chair.

in the sunshine.

in her own little world.

i'm a tad envious.

she doesn't care if people hurt her feelings.

she has a quiet, comfy place to sit and just be.

i need to find one of those places.

Digging out an old shot... Could take pics for the first 3 songs... it turned out that there was almost no light or only backlight (they turned them on later on, when we couldn't shoot anymore), so I wasn't very happy with the shots. Here's the one I consider the most "acceptable".

My brother, arrayed in front porch musical glory. Picture taken Saturday afternoon after our weekly pancake breakfast at the House of Subuded Excitement.

I had a lovely piece of 2x6 butternut; bought it at Jack Parkinson's sawmill in Eramosa around, oh, 1976? I remember I had to pay Jack 85 cents a board foot for butternut in those days, compared to 55 cents a board foot for Hard Maple. Well seasoned, this piece, you might say. It had been waiting for the right project. I was just able to cut the two rockers nested together out of a 40 inch length of this fine wood.

I couldn't just take a tracing from the old rockers: the bottom side had worn away quite a lot, making almost a flat along the centre section. The rockin' hadn't been quite smooth and even for a loooong time

. So I laid out the curves by taking a length of wire to make a compass, straightening it, wound one end tightly around the pencil and attached the other end to a strong nail. The radius was 40 inches. You use the exact same radius for both the upper and lower sides of the rocker. This gives a perfect gentle taper to the piece as you go towards each end.

Here is a closeup of the oak leaf and acorn designs on the backrest. According to my mom, this rocking chair has been in the family for around 100 years. My grandmother used to rock my mom in the chair when she was a baby, and mom fed me while rocking in the chair as well. It was painted bright blue in the 1950s by my grandma, unfortunately, and then they put a thick layer of black paint over that in the 60s or 70s that obscured the carved detail. Also, the chair was singed in a fire at some point, so when I was given custody of the heirloom in the 90s, we had it stripped and restored to our best guess at the original appearance. I know the Antiques Roadshow people wouldn't approve, but it was falling apart and now you can see the detail. It's quite comfortable, and low enough for my short legs to comfortably reach the floor. M-kitty likes to sit under it. In this view, dropcloths temporarily protect the carpet.

don't get me wrong, i don't have anything against nascar and i know a lot of people who enjoy watching advertisement-laden cars racing around in circles, but i've never been one to choose to spend much time getting into the motorsport. but odin loves his playing with his toy cars and he certainly enjoys what he calls my coo car so i guess it should come as no surprise if he happens to flip on the television and there happens to be a race on, he's more than happy to take a seat in his rocking chair, wrap himself in his favorite blanket, and narrate the action.

"oh, look, poppi! coo cars! racing!"

and whooweee, it's exciting to watch the cars go into the pit for a fresh set of tires, because everyone knows that taking off tires is Very Big Fun.

"see! tires! taking off!"

and, of course, it's not very long before he yells, "oh, poppi! car crash!"

Bought from Tradesman on Valencia St. Low-riding teak rocking chair. Designer Soren Georg Jensen, circa late 1950's

Johnson Canyon, Utah: The television series of Gunsmoke ran from 1955 to 1975 and is said to be one of the longest running prime-time shows on television. There were 635 episodes and many of the outdoor scenes for this show were shot in Johnson Canyon near Kanab, Utah. The setting of Gunsmoke is Dodge City, Kansas during the 1870's. A replica of the Hollywood set was created just three miles outside of Kanab. This Johnson Canyon movie set, is perhaps the largest movie set constructed in the Kanab area. It can still be viewed from the road but is not accessible due to its state of general disrepair.

This was my rocking chair when I was about 5 years old. My grandparents gave this to me and it was covered in vinyl. My mother-in-law covered it in this fabric about 20 years ago.

There's nothing like a nice hot cup of tea after a busy day at work while sitting in a rocking chair at home.

***UPDATE*** 5/5/13 Scott and Katherine came in yesterday on a tightly focused mission to find a desk chair, a coffee table, and also a lounge chair. This rare bird was on that list. Cool chair for a cool desk. I like you style guys!
