Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert directly adjacent to Landers, California, that covers 5,800 square feet of ground and is seven stories high. Giant Rock is purported to be the largest freestanding boulder in the world.
Native Americans of the Joshua Tree, California, area consider it to be sacred. A single large room, which was subsequently filled in, was dug beneath the rock and resided in by a prospector named Frank Critzer during the 1930s and early 1940s. Critzer perished in a self-detonated dynamite explosion in this room on July 24, 1942, while being investigated by local police. In the 1950s it was a gathering point for UFO believers. It is located on land which was at that time leased by George Van Tassel, a friend of Critzer's, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of UFO conventions. Van Tassel also built the nearby Integratron and a small airport in the vicinity, which he operated from 1947 to 1975. Shortly after the turn of the 21st century, Giant Rock fractured in two, revealing an interior of white granite.

while our group was there, another couple pulled up on one sled, and proceeded to take out a picnic of store-bought sushi-rolls, crackers, cheese and a bottle of wine..

Like most isolated petroglyph rocks in Georgia, Sprayberry Rock is not in-situ. It was moved a hundred feet or so to accommodate a new bank building, in 1984.
There are three prehistoric feature types on the rock. Only one of these features can be associated with a time period. During the Late-Archaic Period (5,000-3,000 years B.P), steatite or soapstone outcrops were quarried to produce bowls and other vessels. Soapstone bowls were traded all over the eastern and mid-western U.S. In Georgia, the bowls were often carved with tools fashioned from diabase (a very hard volcanic rock from instusive dikes found from Atlanta eastward). There are at least seven soapstone bowl preforms or bowl scars ( where a bowl was actually made and removed) on the rock. One preform was in the later stages of completion when abandoned.
The last two prehistoric features can't necessarily be associated with the Late-Archaic Period. Cupules are a poorly understood feature. In some cases they appear to have a utilitarian purpose and are often referred to as nutting holes. In other cases one to several hundred cupules were placed on isolated rocks or outcrops and appear to have no apparent function. Seldom are they arranged in a recognizable pattern. Cupules that appear to have a utilitarian purpose are often on outcrops near streams. It is thought they were used in the processing of nuts and acorns. This activity probably occurred from the Archaic and well into the Woodland Peroid, and possibly later. In come cases, cupules are considered an art form. There are over a dozen cupules on Sprayberry Rock. Their meaning or use is unknown.
The third type of prehistoric feature on Sprayberry Rock is petroglyphs. This is considered an art from. There are at least three images of concentric circles concentrated on one end of the boulder. There are various interpretations on the meaning of concentric circles. It is impossible to determine at which point these circles are produced. If they are associated with the bowl quarrying they are quite old. Concentric circles appear on other isolated petroglyph rocks in Georgia.

Rock of Cashel, an ancient, hilltop fortress complex for which Cashel is named.In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church.

As I visited Christian lands ,Eastern Armenia and the Baltics on this same trip couldn't help to notice similarites , a contiguousness of christian culture, across much of old Europe, such as the churches, buried bishops or others in old graves within the sacred space.Often over Iron Age sacred sites.

Kyaikhtiyo (Golden Rock Pagoda)
This is one of the Myanmar's oldest religious and trekking tours, popular among people of all ages, crowding the hike uphill all the year round except rainy season of three months.
Start with a scenic drive of 190 km to the east of Yangon to Kin-Pun base camp. Hike uphill 12 km to reach the platform of Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock), a 5.5 meter high pagoda built on a gold gilded boulder that rest precariously on the mountain edge, about 3600 ft above sea level.
Windy cyclone had blown, earthquake had disturbed, but this balancing pagoda on top of the golden rock at the very edge of the cliff, survived for thousands of years.
A legend suggests that the boulder maintains its balance due to a precisely placed Buddha hair within the pagoda.
This hike from the base camp is a test of one's endurance and faith to climb and reach summit. You can also choose an easier way driving uphill on the open truck to Yathetaung about 1 km trekking up to the platform. The scene of the devotees worshipping on the pagoda platform is fascinating and landscapes around its environ at sunset and sunrise are very nice.
The night scene is also fascinating and the enthusiasm of the people, breathtaking. Overnight stay on the platform witness beautiful sunset view of the environ and display of light at the pagoda at night and people offering Soon (alms) to the pagoda at dawn.

Red Rock Canyon State Park features scenic desert cliffs, buttes and spectacular rock formations. The park is located where the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada converge with the El Paso Range. Each tributary canyon is unique, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors.
Historically, the area was once home to the Kawaiisu Indians, who left petroglyphs in the El Paso mountains and other evidence of their inhabitation. The spectacular gash situated at the western edge of the El Paso mountain range was on the Native American trade route for thousands of years. During the early 1870s, the colorful rock formations in the park served as landmarks for 20-mule team freight wagons that stopped for water. About 1850, it was used by the footsore survivors of the famous Death Valley trek including members of the Arcane and Bennett families along with some of the Illinois Jayhawkers. The park now protects significant paleontology sites and the remains of 1890s-era mining operations, and has been the site for a number of movies.
After wet winters, the park's floral displays are stunning. The beauty of the desert, combined with the geologic features make this park a camper's favorite destination. Wildlife you may encounter includes roadrunners, hawks, lizards, mice and squirrels.
Rock Pipit - Anthus Petrosus.
Yesterday was my first day using my new D7100 (outside). The focusing on this body is probably the best I have used. Usually I am using a Nikon D610 and although the quality is outstanding the focusing is not that great. With all the focusing points condensed in the middle it can be difficult to focus on the exact place you want to. The D7100 has a 51-point autofucus which is spread over almost the whole frame.
So, I headed down to swanpool as there have been sightings of a long-tailed duck and Scaup. I did get a couple of record shots of the scaup but the conditions made it pretty much impossible to get a good shot. Anyway after failing to get much on the 'pool', I headed to the beach and found roughly 10 Rock Pipits foraging through the seaweed.
I chose not to photograph them whilst on the seaweed because I have already posted shots from St. Michaels mount which would have pretty almost identical. Therefore I shot when they were standing on small stones and rocks, this should be more characteristic of the bird.
Many people look at this bird and think its quite plain, people were constantly just walking past them on the beach and scaring them off, but they are actually quite photogenic.

A Rock Hyrax, Lake Nakuru Lodge. The rock hyrax is a medium-sized (~4 kg) terrestrial mammal, superficially resembling a guinea pig with short ears and tail. I kid you not, the closest living relatives to hyraxes are the modern day elephants. The rock hyrax is found across Africa and the Middle East, in habitats with rock crevices in which to escape from predators. Hyraxes typically live in groups of 10–80 animals, and forage as a group. Their most striking behaviour is the use of sentries: one or more animals take up position on a vantage point and issue alarm calls on the approach of predators.
The rock hyrax is most active in the morning and evening, although their activity pattern varies substantially with season and climate.(Oct/ Nov 2010)
Balanced Rock is one of the most popular features of Arches National Park, situated in Grand County, Utah, United States. Balanced Rock is located next to the park's main road, at about 9 miles (14.5 km) from the park entrance.
The total height of Balanced Rock is about 128 feet (39 m), with the balancing rock rising 55 feet (16.75 m) above the base. The big rock on top is the size of three school buses. Until recently, Balanced Rock had a companion - a similar, but much smaller balanced rock named "Chip Off The Old Block", which fell during the winter of 1975/1976.
Balanced Rock can be seen from the park's main road. There is also a short loop trail leading around the base of the rock [Wikipedia]
