OK, I apologize for the primative photo stitching, but it was the best I could come up with under the circumstances. It was very overcast and drizzling, and, being Kansas, very windy too. And I guess appropriate since this is the most primitive contraption I think I've ever seen on a railroad. I was amazed to find it still standing. The wind was whistling through it so hard I expected those dishes to take off like frisbees. A signal bungalow with angle iron welded on top to hold the dishes, and wooden poles holding up the reflectors. What I want to know is how did it work in winter? Those dishes would have stayed full of ice and snow. I was also amazed that it was still connected to the power grid. I was tempted to move that breaker box lever up to "on" just to see what would happen, but chickened out.
Oh my gosh ! it was a truelly memorable shooting.

Chalk from the Cretaceous of Britain.
Sedimentary rocks form by the solidification of loose sediments. Loose sediments become hard rocks by the processes of deposition, burial, compaction, dewatering, and cementation.
There are three categories of sedimentary rocks:
1) Siliciclastic sedimentary rocks form by the solidification of sediments produced by weathering & erosion of any previously existing rocks.
2) Biogenic sedimentary rocks form by the solidification of sediments that were once-living organisms (plants, animals, micro-organisms).
3) Chemical sedimentary rocks form by the solidification of sediments formed by inorganic chemical reactions. Most sedimentary rocks have a clastic texture, but some are crystalline.
Limestone is a common biogenic sedimentary rock composed of the mineral calcite (CaCO3), which bubbles in acid. Many geologically young limestones are composed of aragonite (also CaCO3). Numerous varieties of limestone exist (e.g., fine-grained limestone/micritic limestone/lime mudstone, coquina, chalk, wackestone, packstone, grainstone, rudstone, rubblestone, coralstone, calcarenite, calcisiltite, calcilutite, calcirudite, floatstone, boundstone, framestone, oolitic limestone, oncolitic limestone, etc.). Most limestones represent deposition in ancient warm, shallow ocean environments.
Chalk is distinctive variety of limestone that is soft, whitish, and powdery. Chalk is composed of calcite (CaCO3), and will bubble in acid. The most spectacular chalk locality on Earth is the White Cliffs of Dover (farm1.static.flickr.com/119/290719612_5a27cbaf61.jpg), along the southern shores of Britain. The rocks there are Cretaceous in age (“creta” means “chalk”).
Chalk is a biogenic sedimentary rock, but it is not obvious how this white powdery material represents the remains of once-living organisms. When examined under a scanning electron microscope, chalk powder is seen to be composed of immense numbers of exceedingly small microfossils, principally coccoliths (www.soes.soton.ac.uk/staff/tt/eh/pics/lith2.gif). Coccoliths are calcitic plates that once covered a living cell (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/Emiliania_hux...). The cell was an entire organism called a coccolithophorid (Kingdom Protista, Phylum Chrysophyta, Class Coccolithophorida). Coccolithophorids are unicellular, photosynthetic organisms. They are often called “algae”, but they’re better called photosynthetic protists. When they die, the cell degrades, and the numerous hard calcitic plates covering the cell fall to the seafloor.

Chalk generally forms in moderately deep marine environments (but not in the deepest ocean depths), where high numbers of coccolith plates can accumulate as sediments, without calcite dissolution, and undiluted by muddy or sandy sediments washed in from the continents.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: Of the entire Rock line, I've always preferred Yasmin and Cloe's ensembles the most. Originally, I was more keen on Cloe's as it was a bit more casual seeming, and the sort of thing that I would have played with. But having owned the set since December 2011, I really got to appreciate Yasmin's ensemble on a whole new level. It's definitely not the most subtle, neutral outfit. But that's what I love about it. Her bright pink leopard print pants always catch my eyes as I skim my Barbie doll house filled with Bratz. I think Yasmin's medium skin tone looks shockingly great with this shade of pink. Plus, animal print really suits her--although usually it's Cloe who gets cheetah/leopard print clothes. While Yasmin's pants are a statement piece, her shirt and vest are far more versatile. It's kind of a shame that the camisole is sewn to this shirt, because it's so very gorgeous and delicate looking. I definitely would have gotten a lot of use out of it growing up. I love the vest too--this layered look of 2010/2011 Bratz dolls is one of my favorites styles through time to see on my bratty friends. I like how it is "acid washed" too! This outfit wouldn't be complete with golden guitar earrings and a hat. The hat tends to sink over Yasmin's beautiful face and cover her eyes, but I think it looks great with the outfit regardless. These are my favorite earrings from the line, and it's great that my doll can actually wear them (sometimes Bratz ear holes aren't punched in enough to accommodate factory earrings).

The United States Congress designated the Table Rock Wilderness in 1984 and it now has a total of 5,781 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
A remnant of a lava flow that once covered this region along the western foothills of the Cascades, the "fortress" of Table Rock stands at 4,881 feet above the northeastern portion of this small Wilderness. On this steep and rugged terrain you'll find a quiet forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock, with noble fir at higher elevations and crowds of rhododendron on many of the upper slopes, an island of old growth in an ocean of forest development. At least two endangered plants bloom here: Oregon sullivantia and Gorman's aster. Deer and elk wander about in winter, and the northern spotted owl has been spotted among the old trees.
From four trailheads, about 17 miles of trails give access to the Wilderness. A relatively easy hike from Table Rock Road will take you up the Table Rock Trail to the sweeping vista from the summit of Table Rock, where the land falls suddenly away in basalt cliffs on the north face. From this high point, Mount Rainier looms far to the north, Bull of the Woods Wilderness beckons from the east, and the Willamette Valley spreads out to the south.
You will not find any reliable sources of potable water on the trails, so pack along your own. Horses may find dangerous footing on some of the talus slopes.

Complex depositional textures in thinly bedded travertine rock (--> see also my explanatory comments in my previous two recently posted images of this rock type, in my "Geology in building stone" album). The fingers are for scale.
This is a cross-sectional view: the plane of polished building stone in this view displays a [vertical] slice through the near-horizontal sedimentary layering (i.e., the plane of view is perpendicular to the layering).
This travertine rock was probably deposited in a hot spring setting: hot water (carrying chemical compounds in solution) flowed up a fault/fracture (or other groundwater conduit) to the ground [paleo-]surface; the water spilled and flowed outward, precipitating carbonates (and/or other minerals) repeatedly over time and thus building up layers and mounds of mineral matter. Some areas periodically dried out and cracked (desiccation, erosion), providing locally derived fragments that were later moved by surface water flows (transport, deposition). In the photo above, the thick white layers are precipitated carbonate mineral (some with radiating crystal texture), and most of the darker bands have a fragmental texture (locally derived, intraclastic grains), with many coated grains (concentrically layered, from repeated episodes of precipitation of carbonate on the grains).
Some of this layering might have been biologically influenced by bacteria; thermophilic bacteria are now well known from hot springs, and their cryptic (not-always-obvious) role in producing very thin layering (lamination) can be important. (When carbonate sedimentologists are fairly sure that bacteria/microbes were involved, the thinly layered rocks can be termed "microbial laminites.")
Good examples of hot springs that form this kind of rock today are found at Mammoth Hot Spring (Yellowstone National Park, northwest Wyoming), USA and Pamukkale, Turkey -- photos of these sites are easily found online, including here on Flickr.
We geologists are usually careful in our interpretations, and it is worth noting that other depositional settings, such and cold water springs (in lake and river settings), carbonate tidal flats, and caves can deposit similar-looking layered rocks.

Enchanted Rock is a massive pink granite dome rising 425 feet above Central Texas and covers approximately 640 acres. It has drawn people for thousands of years. But there’s more to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area than just the dome. It is a magical place to photograph, hike, and explore. Enchanted Rock opened as a state natural area in October 1978. More than 250,000 people trek to the park each year to experience the magic of Enchanted Rock. In fact, it is one of the most visited parks in the state. Enchanted Rock has long been the center of various legends. Folklore of local Tonkawa, Apache and Comanche tribes ascribes magical and spiritual powers to the rock (hence the name Enchanted Rock). A once-mysterious trait that lends itself to the legends of the "enchanted" nature of the park is when temperatures fluctuate, particularly in the evening, the rock can be heard groaning and creaking. We now know that these sounds are caused by the granite contracting and expanding. Another tale relates an episode of Capt. John Coffee Hays. He was cut off by Comanche raiders from his company of Texas Rangers in 1841. Hays took refuge on Enchanted Rock and singlehandedly held off the Indians in a three-hour battle that ended when the frustrated Indians fled, convinced even more than before that Enchanted Rock was possessed by spirits.
