Zack clims a shorline rock during a short break from our bike ride around Mackinac Island, Michigan.
Rainy days lead you to do some funny things sometimes.It has been storming here on the coast all day,had plans for a visit to the mountains to see what I could find,but had to cancel that idea.So I have been sorting and saving old images and came upon some of Lake Cathie that I had taken showing the coffee rock when it was uncovered by huge seas.So I had to produce this panoramic to show you with Lake Cathie in the background,the coffee rock is not visible all the time but chooses to come and go with the seas and tides..
Coffee Rock is formed by sand and shells compressed with rotting vegetable matter over thousands of years and is usually very high in Aluminium ..

This rock was named the Virgin Rock by early explorers, who could see an image of the Virgin Mary and child in the rock. Weathering has now faded the shape of the child, yet the Virgin Mary is still distinguishable. The local community has installed lights that come on at night and highlight the rock and its features.
this rock came out of the ground at our house.
We intend to use it for something down at the river as part of some work happening there.
As I understand it the hole will have been made manually with a hammer and jumper chisel. The idea would have been that it would be then used to place explosives to split the rock ...but this one must have split in a way that then did not necessitate its use.
An unusual rock to have and wonder about. & nice that it sits so square. lots of options regarding how to use it
I may plant something like a sedum in the hole or i may just leave it as a hole
I must take another picture of it with something for scale!

White Rock Pier – White Rock has, what we believe to be, the longest wooden pier in Canada. It is 100 years old, and, with our lengthy Promenade, makes walking a favourite seaside activity. With the real estate boom of the time, the original pier opened in 1914 as a dock for coastal steamships, and with the thought that White Rock might become a major seaport, especially since The Great Northern Railway line arrived here around the same time. In the 1920s, a Royal Canadian Legion dance hall lay at its base on the shore and when it burned to the ground in 1935, subsequent buildings included the Panda Club – a much talked about sassy establishment in its day – and then a restaurant that also burned down in 1970. Six years later, the pier had deteriorated to such unsafe standards that it is only thanks to community save-the-pier efforts that it found its current lease on life as a major tourist attraction, stretching out 470m/1,542ft into the ocean
Situated on the south coast of the Moray Firth at Portknockie this rock arch is a spectacular and easily accessible feature.
This is one from earlier this year. The rock pipit is a large stocky pipit, larger than a meadow pipit and smaller than a starling. It is streaky olive-brown above and dirty white underneath with dark streaking. It breeds around the coast where there are rocky beaches, and most of the birds that breed in the UK are residents, with only the young birds dispersing once they become independent. Some birds arrive here from Norway to spend the winter (RSPB).
