Solid Rock

Goanna

Out here nothin’ changes

Not in a hurry anyway

You can feel the endlessness

With the comin’ of the light ‘o day

You’re talkin’ bout a chosen place

You wanna sell it in a marketplace

Well

Well just a minute now

You’re standin’ on

Solid rock

Standin’ on sacred ground

Livin’ on borrowed time

And the winds of change

Are blowin’ down the line

Right down the line

Well, after getting out of bed at 3:30am, and driving for 1.5 hours, we headed off down the cliff face in the darkness to shoot the sunrise. Half way down, we had our first casualty, when our fearless leader, John, slipped and fell. All we could do was watch as he tumbled in front of us down the cliff face, but luckily managed to grab on and stop himself. A fractured or broken rib here we think. Got to the rockledge and shot an average sunrise, but found some awesome rock formations, that I definitely want to go back and shoot. Back up the cliff face, and unfortunately, found out that on the way back up, one of the ladies in the group had slipped and smashed her face into a rock, resulting in a very bloody face. The first aid kit came out and was well used. So all in all, one of our more challenging days and not one we'd like to have a repeat of. Here's hoping both John and Lee will recover well. Solid Rock was shot over 65 secs using a B&W Big Stopper.

Detouring BNSF empty coal train E-SLCBKM0-22A passes the Lower Yard in downtown Rock Island while 427's power lays over.

With BNSF's Creston Sub shut down for flooding, the BNSF got creative with their necessary detours. This train ran from Galesburg to Barstow, west to Rock Island, north on the CP from Davenport to Camanche, IA and then west on the UP to Council Bluffs.

Rock formation at a cave in North Devon

One of many geological formations across the United States known as Chimney Rock; this one is south of Cortez, CO near the south junction of U.S. 160 and U.S. 491. (Not to be confused with Chimney Rock National Monument, also in the southwest part of Colorado).

"Marsden Rock is a rock in Tyne and Wear, North East England, situated in Marsden, South Shields. It is overlooked by the Marsden Grotto. The rock is a 90 feet (27 m) sea stack of Magnesian Limestone which lies approximately 300 feet (91 m) off the main cliff face. It was formerly known for its naturally-formed arch. The arch collapsed in 1996 following a winter of storms creating two separate stacks. The smaller of the two was demolished in 1997 due to safety concerns. The remaining stack is reachable on foot during low tide but is completely surrounded by water at high tide. The cliffs surrounding Marsden Rock are an important breeding ground for seabirds and colonies can often be seen on top of the rock itself, including kittiwakes, herring gulls, and razorbills."

If I asked you what colour this Rock Pipit is you would probably mention buffy tones on the underparts and maybe olive-brownish on the back. But this is the same bird taken just a minute or two earlier when it was in deep shadow: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/53345244577/in/dateposted/ Now this shady bird seems to have whitish underparts and cold grey upperparts with no hint of olive or brown. I have not altered the colours of either photo, these are straight off the camera. What a difference a bit of hazy sunshine makes. Incidentally, one of the supposedly diagnostic features of Rock Pipit is buffy/off white outer tail feathers, yet in sunshine or shade, this bird seems to have pure white outer tail feathers. I can see why people have difficulty identifying pipits. Thankfully the darkish legs and smudgy breast markings separate it from Meadow and Tree Pipits. Here's a Tree Pipit with pale pink legs and sharp breast markings: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52935192965/in/photolist

Split rock at Coomba Falls near Maidenwell, Queensland.

I found myself wandering farther, and farther into this magical place; farther than I had ever been before. Many miles with a heavy backpack, camera gear, and an insatiable wanderlust driving me to explore this little traveled wonderland. I live for that next adventure that will inspire my senses, and urge me to create.

A close-up view of North Point, in Sheboygan,Wisconsin, USA, where I do much of my bird and nature photography. This rock outcropping into Lake Michigan is part of a thousand-mile rock escarpment called the Niagara Escarpment, from which the famous Niagara Falls gets its name.

This ledge of sedimentary rock runs from western New York state, up through Ontario, Canada, over to Upper Michigan, and then down through Door County, Wisconsin and further south along the lake and ends close to Chicago, Illinois.

Shorebirds love this rock ledge and the waters of Lake Michigan. Residents of the city often walk the shore and rock ledge for pleasure and exercise. It is here that I cut my teeth on photography and where I have spent many hours of joy and image capturing!

It seems like these little guys steal the show every time they make an appearance at Magee Marsh. They are incredibly approachable and have an amazingly vibrant yellow to them. This one's pose just screamed "rock star" to me. :-P

Split Rock Lighthouse is a lighthouse located southwest of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 by the United States Lighthouse Service at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and the land. It is considered one of the most picturesque lighthouses in the United States.
