This façade in Amsterdam captures the city's unique blend of practicality and charm. The building's brickwork, arched windows, and bold red shutters are typical of the old canal houses that line the waterways. These structures were often warehouses in the seventeenth century, designed with wide openings and heavy wooden shutters to facilitate the loading and storage of goods brought in by boat. The contrast between the dark brick and bright red wood adds a striking touch, reflecting the city's historic architecture that favors both function and visual rhythm.

Amsterdamâs architecture tells the story of a city built on trade and resilience. The narrow, tall buildings were designed this way due to limited space and high taxes based on façade width. Each feature had a purpose: hooks for hoisting goods, arched doors for access to warehouses, and robust shutters for protection against weather and theft. Over time, many of these commercial structures were converted into homes or offices, yet they retained their original shapes, preserving the city's mercantile identity.

Today, these façades are symbols of continuity and adaptation. While the bicycles leaning on the walls and the restored windows speak of modern urban life, the materials and forms remain anchored in the Golden Age of Amsterdam. The balance between preservation and reinvention is what gives the city its timeless character; a place where centuries of history coexist naturally with daily life.

Elegance in Action

Despite now being 83 years old, Princess Elizabeth is still admired by many who love steam locomotives for its elegant design, powerful performance abilities and magnificently evocative exhaust sound. Its robustness, sheer guts in hauling huge loads up long gradients and smooth riding qualities have endeared the engine to footplate crews and enthusiast alike.

Whilst it may not be the fastest British express locomotive, nor the most modern, it is in many ways the most impressive. Capable of developing indicated power outputs well in excess of 2,000 Horse Power; 6201’s lineside spectators and passengers on today’s main line special trains can hear every one of them in action!

Amazingly, 80 years after she shattered the world’s highest long distance steam average speed record, sustained non-stop in both directions between London and Glasgow, 6201’s record of over 70 mph for 401 miles still stands. Princess Elizabeth is a living testimony to the design quality that Sir William Stanier FRS and his LMS team applied to her creation and development, including the engineering excellence that the craftsmen of Crewe works put into her construction.

The Locomotive 6201 Princess Elizabeth Society Ltd strives to preserve those values of excellence for the delight, inspiration and education of future generations. They are values that can serve Britain well in the future, but preserving them and 6201 requires constant effort, skill and above all else investment in the engine.

This is quite a robust, stout-stemmed, tall plant of damp places, ditches, riversides and generally unshaded places. Its downy stems bear leafy racemes of rose-pink four-petalled flowers, each carrying the distinctive four-lobed stigma at its pale centre. The flowers (15-25mm across) are bypassed in height by slender, hairy seedpods which split when ripe to release seeds attached to plumes of silky hairs.

This plant makes a great display on the roadsides in July and August, almost like a herbaceous border gone a bit wild and is also a great source of nectar and pollen for bees as well as being a food plant for a few species of Hawkmoth caterpillars. Great Willowherb is a native plant belonging to the family Onagraceae.

A thin layer of soil supports a robust, blooming community of heather under the watchful limestone tower of the Picu Urriellu (8,264 ft; 2,519 m), Picos de Europa, Asturias, España. The tower has a 500 m prominence and its North face was first scaled in 1904 by a team of two Spaniards. Oddly, in 1855 a German geologist and engineer began referring to Picu Urriellu in writing by a new name “El Naranjo de Bulnes”. The name “Bulnes” is simple enough to understand because the tiny, stone town in the valley at its base bears the same name. The “El Naranjo” (The Orange) component may refer to the orange hue of the limestone. Whatever the old German was thinking, the name he chose is not one ever used by the locals (or so I have now read).

When it comes to wandering in mountains, it happens to me with enough regularity that the common denominator is clear. And, the pattern stretches over a course of almost 30 years. When planning a route, I will consult the available maps, sometimes with the company of a co-conspirator, and these maps may be digital or may be paper. A trail will appear to exist, and I/we will incorporate it into some sort of plan that then often involves various other friends or family. When faced with the real world depicted on the map, I find that the trail is faint, intermittent, and over lengthy stretches is nowhere to be seen. Route-finding then ensues with all of its attendant stimuli. Some friends may find this scenario entertaining, while others have reacted with anxiety. I feel bad for the latter because it is hard to know ahead of time when the maps are incorrect, and it is never my intention to have to go off-trail inadvertently without knowing anything about the route in advance. Here, we see the end of one such route, as I paused and looked back the way we had come. Not far out of frame, the faint path was lost amongst the jumbled limestone, and I found a way through with my wife and son. I learned later from my son that he had taken a selfie at the beginning of the off-trail route finding as he wanted a final photograph of himself to be recorded should he perish in the wilds. Sometimes it is hard to know just what a parent is teaching their child in any given moment…

Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus) at its Home

Robusta torre que defiende la puerta de la Barrera o de Santander. Según la tradición, durante la Edad Media fue sede del preboste (oficial real encargado de la recaudación de impuestos). Más tarde hizo las funciones de Cárcel Pública de la villa.

This robust skipper was having a great time eagerly sipping nectar from the blooms of Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellatus), a deciduous shrub native to Asia introduced into the U.S. as an ornamental plant in 1830.

Regrettably, Autumn Olive is highly adaptable and resilient spreading uncontrollably in the warming climate of the Mid-Atlantic states where entire alleys of this large shrub can be found along forest edges, in sunny clearings and meadows and along fence rows and roadsides. With enticingly fragrant flowers, Autumn Olive attracts pollinators in early spring and later in the fall it attracts birds that help to disperse its abundant fruit.

A large, robust rusty lark with a short crest, a hefty bill, and a prominent rufous wing panel that is obvious in flight. The Rufous-naped Lark is geographically very variable, and there may be cryptic species nested within this complex. Pairs are resident in open grassland, grassy savanna, woodland, and cultivation. It is most conspicuous in the spring and summer, when it perches up singing a sweet, simple song of 4-5 notes such as “treee-leee-treeloo,” occasionally drooping its wings and jumping with a small flutter, exposing the rufous wings that it shares with some other larks. The similar Red-winged Lark is larger than Rufous-naped Lark and less compact, with a longer tail and blackish patches on the sides of the neck.

A photo I took at the end of last year that I have been saving in the hope it would do well in some photography competitions. This was a huge fluke, I was practicing a technique that is very difficult to master. The plan was to take three horizontal shots in order to stitch a vertical panorama with the Robust Dtella (Gehyra robusta) in the foreground. Somehow on the second shot I managed to capture the meteorite. Mount Isa, QLD.

ROBUST AND FAMILIAR SEABIRD, best know for its large and densely packed cliff breeding colonies, seen at Skomer Island, Swims well and dives frequently. It flies on whirring wingbeats, and the relatively narrow wings are also used when swimming underwater . The voice is amazing, utters nasal, growling calls at the breeding colonies. Suffers badly during oil spills, many years ago I took 13 oiled birds, in a short period, from the sea wall at Reculvers, Kent, to be cleaned at the Observatory at Sandwich.
