Drivers...start your engines! Mr. Andy gets our LEGO robots ready for a racing program.

While on a run with a friend, we spotted this building. The way it was lit up made it look like a Robot face. We thought it was great, so I took a photo with my phone.

The green dot was the clue, they’d started to appear around the city earlier that year. He first thought it was a student project or an alternative graffiti artist; he remembered the notorious stickerer of New Cross, rumoured to be an art student, who over the space of 12 months had built up a memory, a stationary palimpsest, of his daily routines. Brightly coloured stickers, the type you’d find in Office World, where left on lamp posts, handrails, doors and bus stops. There were hundreds of them, leaving evidence of the movement and actions of a stranger… an emergent record of the banal movements through space over time.

But this was different, the dots appeared on objects that you first didn’t expect; on products that were handmade or crafted locally. The products of the new revolution, the ones that were sweeping the country; a neo-craft movement, that began with the hipsters, had now grown in momentum and scale. People had returned to the ideas and ideals of Ruskin (without the attendant misogyny); where their labour was evident in their close material domain. From craft beer to artisanal axes, people had rejected mass manufacturing for simpler times, but something about the green dots had given him cause for concern.

In the first decade of the 21st Century a ‘new aesthetic’ had emerged. Named, documented and described by the artist James Bridle, it had influenced a lot the visual culture of the early part of the century. To see chocolates with robot readable surfaces wasn’t unusual in itself, but the dots regularity and distribution hinted a system much darker than a trend for post-internet artists. The dots were the first sign of an infiltration, and ultimate downfall, of the global shift in capitalism.

The Lette Robot image, subtly touched up, and cropped. Did some touching up on the face to take out those nasty rez lines, a bit of dodge and burn, some hair details, a little flash in the eyes, cleaning up some Windlight shadows on the clothing, and she is ready to go....

Do yourself a favour and view it large.

Lette is always beautiful, but there is something a little cold and dangerous about her here that makes my servos go "twang".

Robot made of Junk. Nicer than a lawn jockey.

We are teaching a new maker art class called ‘Robot World’, to help children create their own artistic robots. This class for grades 4-5 will take place at the Lycée Français in Sausalito. Students will learn how to make their bots move in a variety of ways, as well as play sounds and light up, using a programmable Arduino board. They will then decorate their animated creatures, give them a story, and create a magical world for them to live in.

This photo set covers our our first prototypes for this class, featuring a Baby Angel, an Alien and a Bamboodu native american spirit, in different stages of construction. Students will design their own characters, and we will laser cut wooden figures based on their designs, using the same mechanisms to make characters shake their heads and wave their arms while they roam.

Each student will receive a robot kit, which they will learn to assemble, control and program. They will then take their completed robot home with them, after the class ends. For this course, my partner Edward Janne and I have created our own robot kit, using an Arduino Feather M0 for the robot, an RF remote, a custom chassis, plus three additional servos and more parts. Our robot kit is similar to commercial products, but with a lot more features at a lower cost.

We are also teaching a similar class for adults and teens at Tam Makers in Mill Valley, which will use the same robot kit. In just two evenings in late September, we'll show students how to build their own robot with Arduino, make it move, light up and play sounds -- then take it home.
