My first Illustration, completely from scratch on the computer... It's not for homework; not for a class; not an exercise in a book. It's completely from my brain, just for kicks, and to goof around with the program to learn it better.
I started with the idea of the horizon, and after creating the whole background, I thought, "What the heck do I add to this thing without completely ruining it"... All I could picture was this goofy robot--don't know why. I couldn't get it out of my head and now I have the freedom to pursue other creative illustrations.

This guy is still in progress. I like showing him here so people can see the amount of watercolor paint and digital work that goes into each piece. Once he gets glassed in some of the fun painting detail will of course be lost. He will also not be quite as busy once the glass tones down the background some, although I will prob use a lot of clear, so we shall see what happens.
He was inspired by Robot Law #2: "A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law."
I am going to try to finish him today and also play with some new pearlized inks I just bought, and maybe start on a new large squid piece.

We are teaching a new maker art class called ‘Robot World’, to help children create their own artistic robots. This class for grades 4-5 will take place at the Lycée Français in Sausalito. Students will learn how to make their bots move in a variety of ways, as well as play sounds and light up, using a programmable Arduino board. They will then decorate their animated creatures, give them a story, and create a magical world for them to live in.
This photo set covers our our first prototypes for this class, featuring a Baby Angel, an Alien and a Bamboodu native american spirit, in different stages of construction. Students will design their own characters, and we will laser cut wooden figures based on their designs, using the same mechanisms to make characters shake their heads and wave their arms while they roam.
Each student will receive a robot kit, which they will learn to assemble, control and program. They will then take their completed robot home with them, after the class ends. For this course, my partner Edward Janne and I have created our own robot kit, using an Arduino Feather M0 for the robot, an RF remote, a custom chassis, plus three additional servos and more parts. Our robot kit is similar to commercial products, but with a lot more features at a lower cost.
We are also teaching a similar class for adults and teens at Tam Makers in Mill Valley, which will use the same robot kit. In just two evenings in late September, we'll show students how to build their own robot with Arduino, make it move, light up and play sounds -- then take it home.

This is absolutely terrifying. It looks like its just barely in control of itself. And hungry. This kinetic sculpture (the Mondo Spider) was built by a bunch of Canadians, who were adorable in their geekery. Al and I were talking to them, asking them some questions about how long it took them to make (only 9 months!), and he was distracted in mid sentence by an attractive woman with some tattoos across the way. He apologized with a "Sorry. We don't have hot nerd chicks like that where we come from."

The Marxbot, a mobile robot designed for collective/swarm-like behavior.
We had 70 of them so we did what engineers like to do most: building stacks of stuff!

strobist: dlite2 shot through umbrella behind the robots directed straight at camera, at half power, 80cm reflector above camera at 45° to bring some light to the front. Triggered via PC cable..
The Zeiss is amazing. A bit of high key shot - but wanted to do something that made this little critter stand out. He's positioned in a very unflattering place in the city.
