Road to nowhere Goathland

Wednesday morning I cycled 22km roundtrip from home thru downtown Victoria and back home along the Galloping Goose Trail GGT).

 

I wanted to checkout the 'new' Fort Street bike lanes; sadly, there are no 'new' Fort St. bike lanes.

 

The new dedicated bike lanes on Wharf St. connect to the Fort St. lanes on their western end but the lanes still end at Cook St. on their eastern end.

 

Coming into town from the east, Fort St. is one-way eastbound. This means there are no provisions for cyclists to enter the city and connect with the Fort St, lanes from this location. Sad.

This is our first morning in the Bulgarian coastal town of Nessebar. At the end of this roadway is the western gate and tower mentioned in the article that follows: "In the beginning of the 1st century AD Mesambria was included in the Roman Province of Moesia, while in the 2nd century AD it was transferred to the Province of Thracia. During the Roman period, Mesembria kept its position as an important town and trade center located on Via Pontica, or the Pontic road, which runs along the Western Black Sea Coast. From Emperor Hadrian to Emperor Philip I, or from AD 117 to AD 249, Mesambria minted its own colonial bronze coins. The pre-Roman fortification walls and public buildings were almost intact and continued to exist throughout the Roman Imperial period. Temples of Asclepius, Aphrodite, Serapis, Isis and Anubis were also built in that time. In the middle of the 5th century AD the Greek fortification walls were renovated and reconstructed, and the entire peninsula was surrounded with a fortification wall with semicircular and circular towers. The new wall was 3.80 m wide and about 10 m high. During the Middle Ages the fortification was reconstructed and reinforced on several occasions. Nowadays, the well-preserved western gate of the Early Byzantine fortification, protected by two pentagonal towers, is one of the main archaeological monuments visible in the new town." A Ford Cargo of Roadway Express. The Cargo cabover I believe was assembled in Brazil, but sold to Freightliner with the rest of Ford's heavy-duty truck line. Freightliner renamed the line Sterling.

On day four of my train journey across Canada by VIA rail. October 2018. We are seeing lots of snow now.

 

The window are not very clean so the photos are not that good. Also the train was speeding along at times and really bumpy. I have put all the photos I took on my journey on Flickr as a record of my trip.

107 Year-Old Decaying Bridge to Nowhere

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a disused bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. Originally part of the Overseas Railway, the State of Florida purchased it after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it to provide automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. After a replacement Bahia Honda Bridge was opened in 1972, two spans of the bridge were removed to accommodate boat traffic and make the majority of the bridge inaccessible to pedestrian traffic, but the rest remain standing.

 

It was originally built by Henry Flagler as part of the Overseas Railroad which was completed in 1912. Flagler funded the construction of the bridge, along with the rest of the railway himself. It was purchased by the state of Florida and converted for highway use in 1938 after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Rather than completely rebuilding the bridge after the hurricane, the existing structure was repaired and the deck for the Overseas Highway was added on top, as the existing deck inside the truss was too narrow for vehicular traffic. The bridge served as the primary mode of transport to the islands of the lower Keys, and as a primary evacuation route.

 

A new four-lane bridge was built in 1980, a few hundred yards north of the old bridge, replacing the old route of U.S. 1. Today, the former bridge provides a scenic overview of the area for tourists. Two of the truss spans have been removed in order to facilitate boat traffic, as the new bridge has an increased span height. The original bridge has fallen into a state of disrepair and signs have been posted on the bridge warning boat traffic to watch for falling debris, but all of the sections have remained standing (not counting the two that were removed). At 3,000 vertical feet (880 m) above the Colorado River, the sheer drop from Toroweap Overlook offers a dramatic view. The volcanic cinder cones and lava flows in this ancestral home of the Southern Paiute people make this area unique.

 

A visit to Tuweep provides an opportunity for an uncrowded, rustic, and remote experience. Access is challenging and demands skill at negotiating difficult roadways. Depending on the route you take that is 50 to 62 miles of dirt road; the last 6 very rough.

 

Services are non-existent: there is no water, gas, food, lodging, or phone service.

On Saturday, June 22, 2024, the Shore Line Trolley Museum held their annual Museum in Motion event prior to opening for the season the next day. The event included two parades that featured 21 different pieces of equipment from the museum's collection, menu of which are not typically seen on public operating days.

 

Union Street Railway RPO no. 302 (J.M. Jones, 1907) is seen curving around the loop at the Shore Line Trolley Museum, returning to the yard after the morning "Museum in Motion" parade.

We took a road trip through the Northwest Territories this fall. It is a beautiful time of year - not too cold, fall colours, and the bugs are gone! And no people. We had the roads to ourselves. I had this picture taken to demonstrate how little traffic there was. We had plenty of time to get out in the middle of the road, set up for the picture, take the picture, and get back in our vehicle way before any traffic would come!
