My son was in a fender bender (his fault) the other day. Thankfully, and most importantly, he and everyone involved are fine. Not too sure about the state of the car though; waiting for the insurance person to give their verdict. Gulp.

In the olden days, before portable telephoning machines were invented, if you broke down in the middle of nowhere... chances were that you'd never be seen or heard from again.

A 1962 Norton ES2 fitted with a Watsonian RAC sidecar combination, once used as a patrol motorcycle by the Royal Automobile Club. Reliable and practical, these machines were a familiar sight on British roads, providing roadside assistance and support to stranded motorists. A fine example of classic British engineering and motoring heritage.

"19 June 1905. A small group of motoring enthusiasts band together to warn fellow drivers about speed traps."

They opt to call themselves the Motorists' Mutual Association.

In response to the zealous police enforcement of driving restrictions, the group organised teams of cyclists who, through a combination of signals and salutes, assisted drivers to stay safe on the roads and avoid punitive penalties.

A month later, as the group established an enthusiastic following among the motoring community, they settled upon a new name (and it was a real keeper). The Automobile Association.

Oxford Bus Museum & Morris Motors Museum

The bus museum has its origins in the Oxford Bus Preservation Syndicate, which was set up in 1967 by a group of bus enthusiasts.

They had the foresight to see that buses and coaches of significance to previous generations should be saved and preserved for future generations to enjoy before they were lost for all time.

Beginning with just one vehicle, the number of preserved and restored vehicles has grown, and the museum now contains around 40 vintage buses and coaches, including a number of unique vehicles, the earliest dating from 1913.

Morris Motors Museum

The museum traces the development of the Nuffield empire, founded by William Morris (who became Lord Nuffield), which grew from humble beginnings in a bicycle workshop to become one of the world’s major vehicle manufacturers.

The museum has a collection of eleven cars and one van built by Morris Motors and other Nuffield Organisation companies and their successors.

They range in age from a 1928 Morris Oxford bullnose to a 1977 BMC Mini. The collection also includes a Z-type van and a Nuffield tractor.

The link between William Morris, founder of Morris Motors and buses in Oxford, can be traced to 1913 when he and a partner started the first motorbus service in the city.

Since Keen Transport Inc. hauls oversized loads, the company must make specific arrangements as to where and when it can haul, usually limited to daylight hours. When the company has a roadside issue, representatives at the PACCAR Customer Center are able to quickly respond and offer solutions that don’t require the company to break the terms of its hauling permit.

I don't know what's going on over there... looks like it might be a tricky problem, or they were running a 2 for 1 service truck deal at the time?

Luckily no more time was wasted, and the patient is now on his way to MBTC.

Hopefully, he wasn't down too long before the officer arrived, and help arrived in time.

Late for work, afraid to stop on a busy street, wary of strangers...

Sooner or later, you would hope a passerby could at least call 911 while driving by.

Then again, you don't want to get stopped for using your phone while driving, so, maybe just check the news feed later to see what happened and if the poor guy made it?

Another one of my many photos of the tow truck fleet from Palace Garage Towing Recovery. Palace has one of the largest Freeway Service Patrol contracts in Alameda County. The unique taillight arrowboards that they have on their tow trucks are visible from miles away and should be utilized on all recovery trucks.

On the water front, near to the harbour, a preserved and interesting old garage-cum-petrol station converted from a pilchard store.

It owes its survival to an inhabitant of St Mawes, Brenda Pye, who in 1976 made it into an artists' studio. She subsequently donated it to the St. Mawes Gig Club. It now serves as the club's boathouse.

This petrol pump still stands alongside what was the garage forecourt. It harks back to a time when an attendant, usually in overalls, would appear on your arrival and top up your tank as required.

This pump hails from the 1920s and has been preserved with help from Shell Petroleum.

Also great to see the early AA sign attached to the garage's wall. Most of these signs were removed during WW2 in a bid to confuse any unwelcome visitors that might land on our shores.

Despite the end of a long shift, this officer still stops to helps a damsel in distress, when it looks like under the hood, is way over her head.

As emergencies go, this one was a lot of get up and go, but not a lot of hard work to do.

Traffic is finally creeping by, FHP handles an unrelated fender bender, and C&S towing is getting that overheated Cavalier off the road.

Stagecoach have placed a further order for hybrids for Scotland although this time they will be on the Volvo chassis with Alexander Dennis bodywork and will go to East Scotland for the Tayway network.

29005 was causing a bit of bother in the evening peak on Market Street earlier in the week having come to a halt with the Stagecoach recovery van unable to get it to move again with Norscot presumably having to come in the end.
