FIRST THOUGHTS: The Peugeot 4007 was, for a variety of reasons, a genuinely impressive first effort from the French manufacturer. Now, Peugeot has added the 4008 to its expanding local portfolio once again promising European luxury at an affordable price.

When the Honda Jazz came on the scene in 2002, it delivered a cattle-prod shock to the light car market. Only three generations of Volkswagen Beetle have been produced in seventy five years, that is surely some sort of record in terms of model longevity, however with the engine now located in the front and driving the front wheels, its a big departure from the original design. Whilst the all-new third generation still carries that unmistakable Beetle profile, it a much more modern form, when compared with the old. www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/reviews/car-reviews/volkswagen...

I am not prurient enough to call this picture taken By Ron Doig at Duxford a pair of Bristols (though I know many who would). Looking at the destination screens on these two Bristol Commercial Vehicles products tells an interesting tale however; the Crosville-liveried series one Bristol RELL6G HFM594D dates from 1966 and was fitted with fifty coach seats for express services from Merseyside to North Wales holiday resorts and thirty years later was restored in the ownership of Northern Bus, whose proprietor, Duncan Roberts had a soft spot for all things Bristol/ECW and all things Crosville. It was one of three former Crosville Bristol/ECW buses in his charge that he lent to Gavin Booth (of Edinburgh) and Steven Morris (not of Somerset) for a Classic Bus roadtest. As the others were a five-speed FS6G and an SC4LK, the RE with its air suspension, synchromesh and adequate power was the easy winner.

The Wales on the destination blind of HFM594D is a former pit village near Killamarsh in South Yorkshire: not so far away is Rhodesia.

Unlike deep mining the Cornish town of Mousehole is very much still with us, and although the local pronunciation is alleged to be closer to ‘Mowzle’ the name does imply a place with restricted dimensions; the Marshall-bodied LHS6L in Western National livery is VOD125K one of twelve shared between Western National and Devon General. Marshall had previously built narrow LHS6Ls for Soutern Vectis but ECW engineered its own narrow body from 1973.

Western National shared the services to Mousehole pre-deregulation with Harvey’s of the town whose fleet consisted of a former Halifax Weymann bodied Albion Nimbus and two LHS6Ls, one with a later style of Marshall body and one with a Wadham Stringer Vanguard.

There was plenty of high-end metal being unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, but the likes of the one-off Lamborghini Aventador J, the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, and the Maserati GranTurismo Sport, and others weren’t the real show stoppers... there were plenty of the big-end players downsizing: Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3, Volvo V40, and much more. Ice encrusted water? No sweat- the Wrangler had no trouble getting through anything we found to test it.

Fold down rear Seating either in part or in full allow extra space in the luggage compartment, an increase of up to 1,170 litres, enough area to facilitate two mountain bikes with front wheels removed.

However even with the rear seats in their standard position the cargo area is still large enough to facilitate a Pram.

From Road and Travel (http://www.roadandtravel.com/roadtests/firstimpressions/2007/jeep-wrangler.htm) -

There is no graceful way to climb up and into a Jeep Wrangler. The angles are awkward, the height is high and the interior is anything but plush and comfortable. This, I realized, as I hiked myself up and behind the vehicle’s steering wheel around five o'clock on a Friday afternoon, incidentally dressed in a rather restricting skirt.

My first thought: This is not my type of vehicle. Yes, I look for function and practicality in a vehicle – and the Wrangler Sahara embodies both of these traits; but what it lacked, in my opinion, was the necessary ease associated with handling daily errands and long weekend drives. Wrangler’s rugged capabilities weren’t priority on my checklist of car

must-haves.

And then, on my long weekend drive to Bay City, Michigan, rain began to patter against the Wrangler’s windshield as I was cruising the expressway at 70 mph. After a few minutes, it fell harder, then harder yet, until the wipers were whipping to and fro at max speed. The windshield, which moments earlier seemed irritatingly close to my face and extremely vertical, was now a godsend, offering a close and clear view of lane markers, despite inclement weather.

The height of the muscular truck, which had before seemed cumbersome and distinctly guy-oriented, was now an attribute that I was thankful for – perched high enough above neighboring drivers to see what lay before me on the expressway.

As I drove, I counted the redeeming qualities of the Red Rock painted Wrangler Sahara, nipping my initial perceptions of the vehicle in the bud, one by one.

It was maneuverable, offering the height and function of a truck, without the dragging weight of a bed in back. It was roomy, offering four doors, five seats and plenty of cargo space with a clean interior too - no nonsense gadgets or unnecessary frills. It was safe, offering multi-stage front air bags, optional seat-mounted side air bags, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability, Electronic Roll Mitigation, ABS and side-impact door beams.

And one characteristic that nobody can deny – the new Wrangler carries on the classic sport attitude traditionally associated with Jeep. In it, one can’t help allowing a bit of the fun-loving, off-road attitude of Wrangler to rub off on them - especially if it's warm enough to ride minus the Freedom Top (Jeep's 3-piece modular hard top).

I had conformed. I may not be heading off to the next Camp Jeep or slapping on a “If you can read this, flip me over” bumper sticker, but I had grown a soft spot for the Wrangler Sahara that made my would-have-been taunting drive one of ease.

Switching on the high beams and considering the stability of the slightly frozen farm ground surrounding us, I turned to my passenger, who raised an eyebrow to my mischievous grin.

“Interested in a little off-roading?” I asked.

If the bank balance allows you can't go past the Turbo. It's expensive and it's the thirstiest of the range but it is also the most "Porsche-like" Cayenne of the bunch.

The Turbo is the least "green" of the range, but honestly, when you are inside this beast the last thing you are thinking about is the environment.

Given the fact that the outgoing Golf is a genuinely impressive vehicle with small margin for gripes, VW has set for itself a fairly tough act to follow. It’s hard enough to make the step up and replace a model that has in built issues or numerous niggling deficiencies. Improving on one that has been so successful is a different story altogether. www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/reviews/car-reviews/volkswagen...

We had a sneak preview of the flagship S-Edition at the Sydney International Motor show last year, and on paper it looked the goods courtesy of a 193kW and 347Nm turbocharged engine lifted from Subaru’s Impreza WRX. It’s matched to Subaru’s five-speed auto transmission with paddle shifters. And that initial on-paper impression has been largely confirmed by our drive at the recent launch.
