" Rishikesh is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India, it is known as the "Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas" and "Yoga Capital of the World".
It lies approximately 25 km (16 mi) north of the city Haridwar and 43 km (27 mi) southeast of the state capital Dehradun.
It is known as the pilgrimage town and regarded as one of the holiest places to Hindus.
Hindu sages and saints have visited Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge."
View from our room - ashrams and jungle beyond. We had to mostly keep our windows closed as the local monkeys are skilled in grabbing food and other items but are generally tolerated in this pilgrimage town.
Lakshman Jhula, is a famous hanging iron bridge across Ganga, and is about 3 km from the main township of Rishikesh. As per mythological tales, once Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Ram, crossed river Ganga at the same site where the bridge now stands. That bridge was made up of jute, though. Since then the bridge has been named as the Lakshman Jhula and is one of the most visited bridges by the tourists.
It offers some breathtaking views of the Ganges and more so on a clear day. I was not disappointed when I reached here. Mesmerizing sunset and the calmness of the river portray the serenity of Rishikesh.
And suddenly the honking of vehicles remind me that I am back in Bangalore!!
The Ram Jhula suspension footbridge across the Ganges , from the Swarg Ashram side - not often seen with so few people on it!
Visitors on the Swarg Ashram side of the Ganges - a crop of the previous shot in my photostream. Haridwar and Rishikesh, both towns on the Ganges, are places of pilgrimage for Hindus
Trayambakeshwar is one of major holy place in Rishikesh. Trayambakeshwar temple is believed to be one among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Rishikesh!
For me, that is a name that conjures up the sound of sitars, images of pastel-coloured Hindu Gods, and memories of songs from the Beatles’ post-hallucinogenic phase.
The streets are full of life.

A devotee participating in the evening prayers/arti that happens on the banks of Ganges at Rishikesh. Near the Swarg Ashram area.
Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies) line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free and vegetarian enclave upstream from Rishikesh town.
Rishikesh is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. It's the yoga capital of the world, mix with new age ideology and pilgrims going to Gangotri.
