Uber is the most ride-hailing app because of it’s easy and fast service. You can easily book your car by connecting with your driver with the help of Uber app. The ridesharing app is currently available in more than 500 cities worldwide. You can pay the bill by cash, credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay. Your driver will take you from your home and drop you on your destination whatever the route is and charge less than a local taxi.
An Uber decal and a Taxi and Limousine Commission (T&LC) permit as seen on a Toyota Camry.
The rise of smartphone-based "rideshare services," such as Uber and Lyft, has been both welcomed and criticized, the latter especially by established taxi and livery companies. It's especially true back home in Los Angeles and also in San Francisco, where any private citizen can go through a background check and quickly become an Uber driver (including yours truly).
In New York City, where the taxi and livery companies are very well established and an integral part of life, the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission is well-established and does a reasonably good job of regulating such companies. And Uber and Lyft fall into such framework as well, with driver background checks performed by T&LC rather than the services themselves, and with drivers having to operate with city permits and T&LC-issued livery plates. The permit process is both extensive and expensive, but in turn, being a New York Uber driver can be a lucrative full-time job, with pay rates at least twice what I see in Los Angeles.
Livery services, whether traditional phone-based ones or the new smartphone-based ones like Uber and Lyft, can only be requested through the dispatch system, of course, and it still takes a taxi medallion to pick anyone off the street. The famous yellow cabs are an example of the latter. It used to be that livery cars often did illegal street pickups in areas not well served by the yellow cabs, but T&LC recently reformed and legalized them, by turning them into the new green Boro Cabs, which can do street pickups in Upper Manhattan and the outer boroughs.

A photographer captures a photo of NASA’s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, following arrival and unboxing of the observatory at the Astrotech Space Operations Facility near the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Carruthers Geocorona Observatory is a small satellite set to operate at Lagrange Point 1 (L1), an orbit point between the Earth and Sun about one million miles away. Carruthers will use its ultraviolet cameras to monitor how space weather from the Sun impacts the exosphere, the outermost part of Earth’s atmosphere. The observatory will launch as a rideshare with NASA’s (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe) no earlier than September 2025. Photo credit: BAE Systems

Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, joined by Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy, announce that the Commonwealth is on track to meet the goal of vaccination 4.1 million residents by the first week of June and all remaining COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted effective May 29 at a State House press conference on May 17, 2021. The Commonwealth’s face covering order will also be rescinded on May 29, and Governor Baker will end the State of Emergency on June 15. The Department of Public Health will issue a new face covering advisory consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated guidance. Face coverings will still be mandatory for all individuals on public and private transportation systems (including rideshares, livery, taxi, ferries, MBTA, Commuter Rail and transportation stations), in healthcare facilities and in other settings hosting vulnerable populations, such as congregate care settings. Stay informed about COVID-19 by visiting mass.gov/covid19, calling 2-1-1 or texting COVIDMA (COVIDMAESP for Spanish) to 888-777 for updates. [Joshua Qualls/Governor’s Press Office]
My trusty 2009 Hyundai Genesis, with over 254,000 miles on the clock, had deteriorated quite badly for the past few years due to excessive rideshare duty, but now that I have changed jobs and no longer have to abuse my car every day, I am catching up with badly needed repairs and upgrades. This photo was taken during a drive to Carlsbad Flower Fields, which was also a test drive of the car after those urgent repairs.
Much of the heartbreak for my car in 2016 and 2017 had had to do with damage to the radiator fan, caused by improper repairs after a hit-and-run crash in late 2015. Even though I had taken the license plate of the perpetrator, it still wasn't enough without witnesses. To protect myself and also to capture some interesting footage, I decided to splurge on a nice dash camera system.
The Thinkware F770 was the most highly rated dash cam in 2016 and much of 2017, and even though it's no longer the newest and greatest, it is still a superb camera. I was able to find an excellent deal that gave me the rear camera and the hardwiring kit for free ($300 total from BlackboxMyCar.com). The manufacturer Thinkware is known within its South Korean home market as iNavi; having already used an iNavi navigation system during a Korean road trip several years previously, I have trust in this product as well.
This actually replaces a cheaper, older dash cam for my car, which was a $60 model from China's Aukey that only had low-resolution front view; the old dash cam will now be my spare, to be quickly installed and removed from rental cars and other vehicles.

New for model year 2017 was the Hyundai Ioniq, initially released in hybrid and electric versions, adding a plug-in variant in 2018. The hybrid version gets 55 to 58 miles per gallon depending on equipment, and is the most serious challenger to the supremacy of the Toyota Prius in the hybrid market.
The Hybrid Limited is the top trim level for the hybrid variant, and can be decked out with the Ultimate package which includes navigation, BlueLink telematics, wireless phone charging, and more. This fully loaded Ioniq stickers around $31,000.
The LED rear taillight is used on the Limited as well as the mid-range SEL, while the base Blue gets incandescent lights. Sadly, for the US-market Ioniq LED taillights, Hyundai disabled the amber turn signal, and made the brake lights blink as turn signals, just like what the German douchebags have done with their luxury models lately - I call them "hillbilly turn signals" and absolutely hate them.
I still love my 2009 Hyundai Genesis, but due to excessive driving in stop-and-go city driving under rideshare duty conditions, the car has taken a lot of abuse. My goal is to never drive my own car for such services, but even then, a hybrid powertrain that uses electric power for the stop-and-go driving (which is normally the worst weakness of gasoline engines) is definitely a winning formula. Between the Ioniq being better than the Prius in many ways, and my hatred of Toyota in general and Prius in particular, the Ioniq is most likely to be my next car.

The benefits of bicycling were emphasized during the annual Bike to Work Day event at APG South (Edgewood) May 21.
APG and Harford Commute Smart sponsored the early morning event which began in the Freedom Federal Credit Union parking lot. After a safety briefing, a group of about 50 participants took off for a seven-mile bike ride.
Alan Doran, rideshare coordinator for Harford County Transit, said the event coincides with National Clean Commute Month and that Harford County celebrates Bike to Work Day to promote biking as a fun, healthy, affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative transportation option.
“May is the start of the ozone season, when the ozone levels in our environment start to rise, and that’s why we promote bicycling because it’s cleaner,” he said.

Mayor Baraka said, "My goals have been to protect the safety of UBER riders, to require UBER to pay its fair share including fees and permits under the same kind of regulations as other businesses in Newark, and to create a level playing field for UBER and the Taxi and Limousine Industry. The agreement is fair to all and allows UBER to become a good corporate citizen of Newark. This agreement is good for economic development and job growth in Newark. UBER is an important addition to our city's rapidly expanding technology sector."
"UBER is proud to be the first ridesharing company to reach a compromise with the City of Newark that allows our driver-partners and riders to continue to use our app. The agreement framework released by Mayor Baraka is a model for the state legislature as it considers statewide ridesharing legislation," said Ana Mahony, General Manager for UBER New Jersey. "We thank Mayor Baraka for his leadership in making Newark the first city in New Jersey to embrace comprehensive and fair ridesharing regulations that encourage tech innovation and economic opportunity."

The contract signing took place at the 17th European Space Conference in Brussels, Belgium, and is part of the In-Orbit Demonstration and Validation (IOD/IOV) programme managed by ESA on behalf of the European Commission. The contracts were awarded to Aerospacelab, Berlin Space Technologies, D-Orbit, ISISPACE, LuxSpace and Open Cosmos.
“In-orbit demonstration is a dynamic field, requiring flexibility and responsiveness to maximize its potential,” comments Dietmar Pilz, ESA’s Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
“To enhance the agility of the programme, ESA and the European Commission have decided to integrate rideshare opportunities, which offer experiments a secure and rapid path to orbit on commercial missions. This is a win-win: the experiment benefits from a quick service, while the mission owner can optimise their available capacity by accommodating additional payloads.”
Ekaterini Kavvada, Director of Secure and Connected Space at the European Commission, adds: “With the creation of this pool of European rideshare providers, we continue the paradigm shift in our procurement approach acting as anchor customers for industry, adopting a faster service-oriented approach and onboarding new players from six different EU countries.
“Enhancing the competitiveness of the European space sector is the major driver of our continuous support to innovation. IOD/IOV is the new space gateway open to the whole ecosystem.”
