Council-owned municipal golf course was returned to public use and rewilded to parkland. In 2025, Enfield Council approved a scheme to lease over 50% of the parkland to Tottenham Hotspur for them to develop a training facility, a decision that will see the removal of 207 trees.

Enfield Council agreed a lease of 25 years for just £2m. A stitch-up between a rotten borough and a football club owned offshore.

During lockdown Phoebe and I built an insect hotel out of odd bits of wood, nails and screw and four old donated palletts. Over a few weeks and on our country walks we have gathered "stuff" to fill the cells, just a couple more to go. We have been shopping and managed not to by a piston engine! But did buy lots of plants including some Sempervivums to make a green roof and to add to the smaller cells. Already we have some solitary bee's move in and lots of ladybirds have been seen. Hopefully will be a great home from Autumn......

"Houston, we have a problem!" Went for a stunning cross-country run with a freind today and I managed to find a rabbit hole! Nothing broken but did manage to pull my already sensitive hamstring. Today I have mostly been photographing our re-wilded garden and will be until I can get my physio to do my strapping for me. Oh well, no cycling or running or walking far for a while and we are off to North Norfolk next week too.

On the Greenway in east London.

The Greenway is a cycle and footpath built atop the Northern Outfall Sewer, built in the 1860s to improve sanitation in central London by discharging the sewage far downstream of London.

Now, the sewage is treated in the Beckton Sewage Works in east London and the grass beside the cycle and footpath has been "rewilded" by the London Borough of Newham and has many pretty wild flowers growing atop it.

Sherwood Heath is a Local Nature Reserve at Ollerton in North Nottinghamshire. When I was growing up, this scene looked remarkably different as the entire area was Military Land with this stretch, going far into the forest, a tank training ground. Just imagine that grassed meadow being constantly churned up by tank treads! Given up by the army, the area was left abandoned to nature for years but then was established as a nature reserve and rewilded.

Part of the rewilding process was to keep all the fallen leaves on the flower beds and forest meadow to create leaf litter to allow insects to thrive for the birds, voles and hedgehogs and to encourage fungus.

In late spring this year, I wandered around our gardens, snipping off little flowers here and there and putting them into a white bowl. Some of these flowers are what most people would consider acceptable garden flowers: Bleeding Hearts, Forget-Me-Nots. Others, are what many would call weeds: dandelions, and that lacy white number at the bottom whose name I do not know. I took some photographs to use as reference. Just as they landed, no positioning.

We've been slowly "re-wilding" our property. We don't have the guts to change everything to a natural state in one shot, so we've taken small steps that we can get accustomed to and to which our neighbours can become accustomed.

One example is that we stopped mowing about 15' along the back of our lawn and next to the forest. It's interesting how quickly animals find the newly rewilded area. Last week a flock of 50 wild turkeys made their way from front to back. When they came across this 15' stretch, that is where they stopped..... and ate..... and stayed. For an hour or so, that strip was their restaurant.

This watercolour is approximately 29" X 29" (73 X 73 cm) (outside frame dimension) and was painted using Winsor & Newton Professional watercolour paints plus some Daniel Smith Duochrome Cabo Blue and Iridescent Electric Blue paints on the little forget-me-not flowers. They have a nice glimmer to them.

The paper is Arches 300 lb.

Weeds Are Flowers Too Framed the painting is $1,700.00 (Canadian $)

“Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.”

We have introduced lots and lots of native tree species into our rewarded garden including the fabulous Spindle....

Other names - pheasant back fungi and Hawks Wing.

This is an edible fungi, best when young. I found this nice example on Green Farm near Wichenford in Worcestershire.

In The background you can see one of the many meadows full of Buttercups, this will change slowly as the old farm meadows become rewilded.

Oh yes, at the bottom of our rewilded garden, an area under mixed deciduous trees and where we stack all of our prunnings and leaves and for a couple of years a few collected toadstools to see if we could spread some spores, has it worked, looks like it. A Fly Agaric under a mix of holly, oak, field maple and silver birch seen whilst filling up the bird feeders....

I have been writing a report to send to the Duchy of Cornwall, Swale and Kent Council Planing Departments, the Soil Association, RSPB, KWT, Helen Whately our MP, Cratus Environmental and a number of Kent media outlets to oppose the planned development of a new 2500 house village around the Southern aspect of Faversham with all the effects this will have on the air quality, sewage and waste water run off issues as well as the loss of biodiversity on the site. This reort consists of a covering letter about the environmental issues mentioned above and a species list of the plants, animals and fungus that will be lost. Its taking a little longer than expected so I have given myself until the end of next week to complete. Who knows, it may make a difference! This has been my inspiration this week, our rewilded autumnal garden resplendent with our bug hotel, bird table and feeders, mature native trees and bird boxes, pond and hedgehog home and much more.....

Many trees have been planted in our rewilded garden including silver birch, rowan, horse chestnuts, field maple, and walnut bringing in a whole shed load of birds and squirrels.

In the hills of South Djurs, Mols (Jutland, Denmark) an rewilding project has set these horses free. They have to survive on the premise of nature.

This has risen a great deal of debat on animal rights whether these animals suffer; starvation or to die of thirst.

If you can read Danish, this article, called "Horse war", is written concerning the feelings involved to this project may be intersting; www.altinget.dk/kultur/artikel/hestekrigen

Billy buttons (Craspedia) are a native perennial plant found locally but are not exclusive to our area. These ones are in our local park which is of a formal design from the early 20th century but has a recently added rewilded area on its southern edge with local plants. The billy buttons are a treat to observe as they flower every spring.
