Harriet’s Angel, in the Victorian cemetary Derby, revisited.

The cemetary has been subjected to the current fad of ‘rewilding’, which basically means ‘neglecting’, on the pretext of encouraging insect life to flourish.

Everything from grass verges alongside highways, private gardens and even the tops of bus shelters have been treated to this effort of wildlife recovery.

The feeling when one looks at this kind of thing is of a city in terminal decline.

that I didn't get the whole of the foreground bird in shot.....aaarrrgghh!!

Still, hopefully it gives a sense of the scene of the moor at Glen Feshie that morning.

My guide on this eventful morning, Mark Hamblin, explained how this 47,000 acre estate was now owned by the man that owns ASOS, Anders Polvson.

He also explained how the estate is being actively rewilded with many inititives and plans in place to allow the land to return to it's natural state. He also mentioned that other estates are also engaged in the same process.

It made me realise that while some billionaires want to fly to the edge of space for fun, others can have an extraordinary impact on the environment and the natural world.

our garden in the summer . we have rewilded the garden . .lovely grass left to grow and so many insects now and birds

We sowed a wild woodland meadow as part of the rewilding and up came some beautiful borage here covered in rain drops. The weather is only going to get worse from Thursday so tomorow and Wednesday its "on-u-bike" and off to see how my local Monkey, Fly and Lady Orchids are doing, maybe a quick look at the Birds-nest and Butterfly Orchids too....

Once regularly ploughed and managed as a purely sandy beach, this beach near Chapel St. Leonards, Lincolnshire has been allowed to be naturally colonised by vegetation which stabilises the coastline and protects against flooding.

Confluence of Rio Baker (left) and Rio Chacabuco along the Carretera Austral in the rugged territory north of Cochrane, Patagonia. This is the point of access to the Chacabuco Valley and Patagonia National Park, rewilded from the former ranchland of Estancia Valle Chacabuco.

Council-owned municipal golf course was returned to public use and rewilded to parkland. In 2025, Enfield Council approved a scheme to lease over 50% of the parkland to Tottenham Hotspur for them to develop a training facility, a decision that will see the removal of 207 trees.

Ireland is a very green country, and that includes the tree trunks and the stone walls. There are a few woodlands in Clare that are full of the remains of old drystone walls. Lumps of rock are never far from the surface in Clare but I guess these woods were once farmland that has gone back to nature.

If there was a competition for most scenic track to the farm this would be right up there with the best.

This is Dropping Well Farm down a long winding track, well away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I'm going to document the changes here as this farm slowly becomes rewilded and over time goes back to the original heathland with all that is associated. Five or more years could see a big change here and will seamlessly meld into the Devil's Spittleful heathland next door

I walked through a succession of these rough, wild meadows on my walk between Brailes and Hooky. Still colourful and full of interest even this late in the season, they must have been stunning and full of wildlife earlier in the year.

The last time I took this footpath I don't remember so much rough growth so I think this has been carefully planned and sown to nurture wildlife and there are occasional signs asking walkers to keep their dogs on leads so as not to disturb the area and ground nesting birds.

I hope it's not a one off as I intend to return next spring/summer, especially now that I know I can walk between two rural bus routes through this very rural and unspoilt area.

Near the borders of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.

Life does seem less busy and anxious already. I was suposed to retire at 55 but due to Covid I stayed on for another 18 months reporting images from home on a teleradiography link, mostly CT, MRi, A/E and GP plain X-rays, a nice way to finish. But now I shall look for another job, it is said that in a life time we all have three jobs, me, ODP (Operating Department Technician) a Radiographer and a Nuclear Medicine Practitioner, so whats next? Who knows, probably a year off before a desicsion is needed. In the meantime an aquilegia from a wet garden.....

Thanks for those commenting, saying hello and looking at the two posts since I've been back on Flickr. I haven't had a chance to get to people's streams yet and say hello myself but I'm looking forward to it.

This image is of Asa when he was living at about 3000m. I used to visit him every few days to check and do a food drop, simulating what a mother leopard does in the wild.

As the first successfully rewilded leopard in Nepal using the strategies I employed we have set a template for the future. There are details at wildtiger.org which links to the LEOPARD REWILDING PROGRAM at wildleopard.net

I will be telling more of the story here on Flickr as time goes by.

BTW... the date is wrong, the image was taken last winter here, I'll correct it soon.

This is the last of the set for this project. Maybe, just maybe there will be 'it's saved' set to be made later - who knows.

If you're within easy reach of Enfield and free on Wednesday evening, think about going along to the meeting at St Luke's Church.

When I was making these images I really didn't intend for them to be any part of the activism against closure, it was just another closed course to be documented, but I hope they've had some push on the needle. Its a public space worth saving.

This ancient oak tree stands in the grounds of a business owned by the ENIC Group, an off-shore conglomorate based in the Bahamas that also owns just over 86% Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. It's been said that it was felled to make way for an alternative access road to the corporation's proposed development.

The final decision on the future of Whitewebbs has still not been made, but will have to be made by tomorrow, Wednesday July 16th. Until then information of how you could still object can be found on Insta: @guardians.whitewebbs

I have been spending an increasing amount of time formalising a report and a species list to oppose a proposed development of a swath of grade 1 agricultral land South of Favershm. Faversham, a small, rural, market town on the North Kent coast has been blighted by lax planning disisions allowing rampant housing developments. These have not only had effects on already substandard air quallity and more illegal discharges of waste water and raw sewage into Faversham Creek, but the destruction of irriplaceable habitats for many species of mammal, bird, reptile and invertebrates, trees, fungus and wild flowers, many endangered such as Man Orchids, the viviparous lizard, Goshawk and Long eared bats who live, breed and use this land as hunting terrotories. I have been recording the species and where possible taking photos to illustrate the biodiversity of this land over the past 18 months and what could be lost. The report has been sent to organisations interested in the loss of habitat and species on the site such as the Soil Association, KWT, RSPB among others, national and local media outlets and the D.O.C thier ecologist and planning departments. I have been successful in that a meeting between myself, the D.O.C and representatives from the interested organisation on the 13th December following a walk around of the site. We are hopeful to gain support from our local Sir Bob Geldolf and Chris Packham. The ideal out-come, to have the whole area "rewilded" to creat a New Forest, wild flower meadows, damp lakeside environments and low scrub. If this is not considered then encourage the D.O.C to incorperate enhanced wildlife areas to better the environment over that of the status quo, well managed farmland. I needed something to sink my teeth in post retirement and here it came. Wish me luck and fingers crossed for a positive outcome......
