On average, businesses spend 90% of their marketing budget for customer acquisition i.e. acquiring new customers and getting them to make their first purchase. But few make enough effort to retain these customers – leaving them vulnerable to be stolen by their competitors.

Day 107 (04.16.2012)

The Boyfriend's neighbor bakes the best cakes and cupcakes. She recently baked several for someone's birthday and had a few "extras" she dropped off by his house over the weekend. These were the last two red velvet and I used them as an incentive to finish my taxes. It definitely worked! I like rewards like this!

Hope the tax man doesn't mind a few icing smudges on the tax forms....

"Zeal should not outrun discretion."

A nineteenth-century reward of merit with gold printing and an attached colorful scrap that shows children playing with a toy sailboat.

The proverbial phrase used here -- zeal should not outrun discretion -- also appears as the moral of Aesop's fable of "The Thirsty Pigeon" (see below).

The Thirsty Pigeon

A pigeon, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a sign-board. Not supposing it to be only a picture, she flew towards it with a loud whirr, and unwittingly dashed against the sign-board and jarred herself terribly. Having broken her wings by the blow, she fell to the ground, and was caught by one of the bystanders.

Zeal should not outrun discretion.

-- "The Thirsty Pigeon," from Three Hundred Aesop's Fables, translated by George Fyler Townsend (London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867), p. 24.

After the swap: yay for new (to me) things!
