It is suggested that in order to generate depth in an image, a landscape photographer should lead the eye into an image by making the foreground dark, and the background lighter. That in fact our eyes will be lead into the image because they are attracted to the light. Sounds like a moth to the flame to me.
I however think there is more to it. Rather, the eye is drawn to a contrasting element and to illustrate my point, this image is the reverse of the accepted norm. Instead, the brightly lit trees are in the foreground and the darkest area a single tree, in the background. Do your eyes rest on the dark?
Please share your thoughts.
They are not that common, but they are the nicest: foggy days. While everyone wants to stay inside, I can't be kept inside. Take a couple of country lanes yourself, and you know what I mean. It is wet without it raining. Everything has been abandoned. The atmosphere is unreal. You feel like a space traveler on another planet. It is quieter than usual, but you still hear more than you see. And wherever you look, your gaze is bordered by white, as if someone has photographed the decor away. It is the reverse darkness. Black is now white. The world has suddenly become very small and no matter how hard you try to break the white line, it simply moves along. You are trapped, but still free.

The Sterling Engine showcases thermodynamic elegance, converting heat into mechanical work through cyclic compression and expansion of gas. It operates at high efficiency with minimal entropy production compared to combustion engines. By harnessing temperature differentials, it reveals how energy flow and entropy interplay, emphasizing sustainability in closed-system energy transfer.
A small cup with hot water, an engine on top, and a small ice pack to create a temperature differential since I didn’t have the AC and it was in the 80s; increase the speed.
Note: You can reverse the temperature differential by adding ice to the bottom of the cup and placing a cotton ball soaked in warm water on top. This setup inverts the usual heat flow—demonstrating reversed thermal gradients. When heat is concentrated at the bottom, the wheel spins counterclockwise; when cold is at the bottom, the wheel spins clockwise.

Yet another series of Sandhill cranes from the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife refuge in New Mexico. December 2022. Every day was truly unique and different. The number of cranes, the light, the ice, the temperature.....all varied daily.
