Lake Ljótipollur (Ugly-pond) is a crater lake really close to Landmannalaugar, in the Central Iceland area. The lake is in the bottom of a huge explosion crater, that erupted around the year 1480.

The place is gorgeous, impressive even with "bad" weather, the colours are saturated, radioactive. A gift for the eyes.

 

I shot underexposed on purpose, to saturate the colours, keep the gray tone in the cloud above and enhance the mood and cold present there.

El lago Ljótipollur (que significa el "lago feo") es un lago muy cerca de Landmannalaugar, en la zona central de Islandia. El lago se encuentra en la parte inferior de un cráter, creado por una enorme explosión alrededor del año 1480.

 

El lugar es precioso, impresionante incluso con "mal" tiempo, los colores se saturan, parecen radioactivos. Un regalo para los ojos.

 

Disparé con una exposición subexpuesta a propósito, para saturar todavía más los colores, para mantener el gris de la nube superior y parar aumentar el ambiente y hacer presente el frío del lugar.

Jokulsarlon is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers.

 

When it is cloudy and the water is calmed, the image of the icebergs are mirrored on the lake's surface. The possibilities for photography thanks to symmetries are infinite with this conditions. There are small different water currents, which draw lines on that surface, visible like scratches on the mirror. 15 seconds of exposition did the rest.

El lago Jokulsarlon es, probablemente, el más famoso y grande de todos los lagos glaciares

de Islandia. Creado artificialmente en 1934-1935, el lago ha aumentado en un área de 7,9 km ² en 1975 a 18 km ² hoy día, debido al deshielo producido por el calentamiento global.

 

Cuando está nublado y las aguas tranquilas, la imagen de los icebergs se refleja en la superficie del lago. Es entonces cuando las posibilidades para hacer buenas fotografías se disparan gracias a las simetrías.

Además, hay pequeñas corrientes de agua a distintas velocidades, que dibujan líneas en la superficie, visibles como arañazos en "el espejo". 15 segundos de exposicion hicieron el resto.

Not great quality but a fun capture nonetheless, spotted these two playing in the garden a couple of weeks ago. Taken from the kitchen window through the double glazing. Pic has made the national press and been viewed nearly half a million times on twitter after a retweet from BBC Springwatch, nuts really.

The Skellig Islands (Irish: Na Scealaga), once known as the Skellocks, are two small, steep, and rocky islands lying about 13 km west of Bolus Head on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. They are famous for their thriving gannet and puffin populations, and for an early Christian monastery founded in the 7th century.

Looking north from O'Brien's Tower you can spot this view of the Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs are the natural home for an estimated 30,000 birds, living on the cliffs, representing more than 20 species. These include Atlantic Puffins, which live in large colonies at isolated parts of the cliffs.

 

In 2007, a Visitor Centre was built , where you can find inside a Cliff Exhibition Area, the Puffins Nest Cafe, the Cliffs View Cafe, the gift shop, a baggage store, accommodation booking and information points, graphic displays and images of the Cliffs including a stunning photo opportunity, public toilets, ATM and a fully equipped first aid room. As you can imagine, everything very nature friendly and blablabla.

 

For me, it was a huge disappointment to visit the cliffs, as it remembered me visiting a kind of nature-disneyland. To arrive there, you must pay 8€ (no matter the time) at the parking on the entrance, and then. take a walk via a fully wheelchair accessible stone path, behind a security fence, as well very eco-friendly.

 

Sorry folks, but that is not nature, and of course, I think that is not way it should be. All the beauty of the place has been blown away by this way of doing things.

 

By the way, a new visitor centre is going to be built in the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland (UK)... tourism will kill us all.

Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland and is also the wettest place in the country. Its beaches are composed of natural black sands and a unique feature of the beaches in Vik are the basalt column rising out from the sea, which are often rough due to the high winds in the North Atlantic.

 

A remarkable nearby feature is the beautiful black beach with the Reynisdrangar, black basalt columns sculpted by the sea. A folk tale says that they are former trolls which were caught outside at dawn. The sea around them is rather wild and stormy.

Vik es el pueblo más meridional de Islandia y también el lugar más lluvioso

del país. Sus playas están compuestas de arenas negras naturales y uno de sus componentes más llamativos son las columnas de basalto volcánico que salen directamente del mar, y que son moldeadas por los fuertes vientos y mareas del Atlántico norte.

 

El conjunto más llamativo de estas columnas basálticas es de Reynisdrangar, visible desde la propia playa de Vik. Una leyenda popular cuenta que se trata de trolls, que han fueron cogidos por sorpresa por los primeros rayos de sol del amanecer.

Bjarnarflag Geothermal Power Plant just at midnight. We were going out the Myvatn Natural Baths, and we saw the light of the Midnight Sun.

 

It was the only time I forgot the camera at our place, so I had to drive all the way to Skutustadir and then, come back.

 

The Power Plant is such a strange place, with chimneys and steam vents everywhere. The ground is burning. The light at midnight made this place much more surreal, like a base on Mars...so I decided to shoot at a very long exposure speed, like 6 minutes. The steam and reflections of the sky in the small Blue Lagoon lake made it.

Bjarnarflag, que es una Planta de Energía Geotérmica, a medianoche. Salíamos de los Baños Naturales del Myvatn, cuando vimos la luz del Sol de medianoche.

 

Fue la única vez que me olvidé la cámara en la granja donde dormíamos, así que tuve que conducir todo el camino a Skutustadir y, a después, volver al mismo lugar.

 

La Central es un lugar extraño, con chimeneas y fumarolas de vapor en todas partes. El suelo quema. La luz a medianoche hacen de este lugar algo mucho más surrealista, como una base en Marte ... así que decidí disparar con un tiempo de exposición muy largo, como 6 minutos. El vapor y los reflejos del cielo en el pequeño Blue Lagoon del Myvatn hicieron el resto.

The day after descending Kilimanjaro we took a Matatu (kind of offroad van) from Moshi to Voi, crossing the border of Tanzania (Holili) and Kenya(Taveta), something about 100 loooong miles....by the dusty road wich runs through Tsavo West.

 

During the trip we crossed with some wild animals next to the Road, ostriches, wild beasts, a huge herd of elephants which made us to stop, and my favorite....a giraffe which started to run as soon as spotted us.

 

Giraffes are one of the most elegant animal in the world, seeing it running in wilderness is such a marvelous spectacle...it is like watching slow motion in real life...

 

We were approaching Voi, we were near GAFFER base, in Maungu.

 

If you check it in big (and black), the first plane is moving, because of the speed of the matatu (even shot at 1/500s). The image was shot with a 16mm focal, so, as you can imagine this one was really close!!!

El día después de bajar el Kilimanjaro tomamos un matatu (una especie de furgoneta 4x4) de Moshi a Voi, cruzando la frontera de Tanzania (Holili) y Kenya (Taveta), algo así como unas

100 larguísimas millas .... por la polvorienta pista que atraviesa el Tsavo West.

 

Durante el trayecto nos cruzamos con muchos animales salvajes junto a la carretera, avestruces, fagoceros, hasta gran manada de elefantes que nos hizo parar durante un rato, y mi preferido .... una jirafa, que echó a correr en cuanto divisó el coche.

 

Las jirafas son uno de los animales más elegantes que existen,y verla correr en libertad en la naturaleza es un de los mejores espectáculos que se pueden ver ... es como estar viendo a cámara lenta, pese a que tus sentidos te digan que no.

 

Nos estábamos acercando Voi, estábamos cerca de las instalaciones de GAFFER, en Maungu.

 

Si se hace click para verla en tamaño grande (y negro), el primer plano está en movimiento, debido a la velocidad del matatu (incluso disparando 1/500s). La fotografía fue tomada con una focal de 16mm, así que, como se puede imaginar ¡¡estaba realmente cerca!!

As in the previous posts, it happens that when you shoot a location, you can get some different views of the subject, all of them interesting for some reasons.

 

Like this shot of the Krafla area, in the north of Iceland in the Mývatn region.

 

Krafla includes one of the two best-known Víti craters of Iceland (the other is in Askja). The Icelandic word "víti" means "hell". In former times, people often believed hell to be under volcanoes. The crater Víti has a green lake inside of it.

The Krafla area also includes Námafjall, a geothermal area with boiling mudpools and steaming fumaroles.

 

You can check the other shot here (and in the first comment of this post). The human figure in the earlier shot helped to scale the boiling water lakes and introduce some dinamism into the frame. This one, shot with a wide lens presents a classic landscape shot, showing a general view of the area.

Both of them give different information of the same subject, a landscape.

Al igual que en los posts anteriores, a veces sucede que al componer una imagen, se puede obtener otra información del mismo sujeto, simplemente disparando con un punto de vista diferente, pese a que todas esas variaciones pueden resultar interesantes por diversos motivos.

 

Como en esta fotografía del área del Krafla, en el norte de Islandia en la región del Mývatn.

 

En el área del Krafla está uno de los dos cráteres Víti más conocidos de Islandia (el otro está en Askja). La palabra islandesa "Viti" significa "infierno". Antiguamente, la gente creía que el infierno estaba bajo los volcanes y el Viti era su perta de entrada. El cráter de este Víti tiene un lago verde en su interior.

   

En la imagen anterior, que se puede ver aquí (y en el primer comentario de este post), la figura humana contribuía a escalar los compoenentes de la imagen, como los lagos de agua hirviendo y hacía más dinámico el encuadre. Por otro lado, esta nueva imagen, hecha con un objetivo gran angular desde el mirmo punto, presenta un paisaje clásico, mostrando una vista general de la zona.

 

Ambos aportan información diferente sobre el mismo tema, un paisaje.

The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls of the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. A local boy found the chest years later, but was only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again.

 

This waterfall is just under the "now well-known" Eyjafjallajökull volcano, and it is very close the sea, in the South shore of Iceland.

 

I got really close to the ground and the water, and I shot a really long exposition keeping a low key, to enhance the mood in the waterfall surroundings.

La de Skógafoss es una de las cascadas más grandes del país, con una anchura de 25 metros y un desnivel de 60 metros. Debido a la cantidad de agua la cascada produce siempre, un arco iris simple o doble cuando hay sol. Según la leyenda, el primer colono vikingo en la zona, Þrasi Þórólfsson, enterró un tesoro en una cueva detrás de la cascada. Un chico lo encontró años más tarde, pero sólo fue capaz de coger el anillo antes de que volviera a desaparecer.

 

Esta cascada está justo debajo del famoso (también fuera de Islandia) volcán Eyjafjallajökull, y se encuentra en la costa sur de Islandia, muy cerca del mar.

 

Me puse muy cerca de la tierra y el agua, y disparé una exposición muy larga manteniendo una clave baja, para resaltar la atmósfera en el entorno de la cascada.

In Kenya, people on the coasts live on fishing and tourism (lastly), however the first one has been and it will be their main sustenance.

 

Ironically, the increasing levels of piracy off the coast of Somalia have caused an unexpected spin-off, raising the levels of fish in the sea. Fisherman in Kenya have reported bumper catches of shark and shellfish because commercial fishing boats from China, Europe and Japan have been scared away.

 

The massive factory trawlers which used to drain their fish stocks have been scared away and that means there is a huge bounty for local fishermen as well as helping to restore the health of the marine eco-system.

 

That is a different point of view.

En Kenya, las poblaciones de la costa viven de la pesca y el turismo (por último), siendo este primero su sustento principal.

 

Irónicamente, los niveles de piratería en la costa de Somalia en el Océano Índico han provocado un cambio inesperado, elevando los niveles de peces en el mar. Los pescadores de la zona han reportado enormes capturas de tiburón y mariscos porque los barcos de pesca comercial de China, Europa y Japón se han sido alejados.

 

Los barcos-fábrica de gran tamaño que se utilizan para drenar el fondo marino han sido ahuyentados y eso se ha traducido en una recompensa enorme para los pescadores locales, así como ayudar a restablecer la salud de los ecosistemas marinos.

 

Este es un punto de vista diferente.

As I said in the previous post, sometimes, when you shoot a location, you get some interesting images from the place. They are very similar, but they are not the same. They both have similar light, the same subject, common elements...but they are different.

 

In some cases, you can't decide which one you like most, in fact some days you prefer one and the next day your choice is the other.

 

In Iceland that happens very often, you love the location, you shoot some photos, and then you can't decide....every place is so gorgeous!!

 

It happened again with this previous shot at Vatnsnes, where the moving horses where changing the composition all the time.With that Midnightsun light they were very nervious, neighing and walking around. You can check the other shot here (and in the first comment of this post).

A veces, cuando se fotografía un lugar, se obtienen algunas imágenes insteresantes a la vez de ese lugar. Estas fotografías, pese a ser muy similares, pero no son exactamente iguales. Las dos pueden tener una luz similar, el mismo sujeto, elementos comunes... pero son muy diferentes.

 

En algunos casos, no se puede decidir cuál de las imágenes es más atractiva, de hecho, hay veces en las que te puedes decantar por una y al día siguiente de la elección es la otra.

 

En Islandia, eso sucede muy a menudo, encuentras un lugar genial, disparas algunas fotos, y después ya no puedes decidir ....

 

Me sucede lo mismo con esta foto de los caballos en Vatnsnes, donde su movimiento cambiaba la composición de la imagen constantemente. Bajo la luz del sol de medianoche estaban muy nerviosos relinchando y trotando sin parar. Se puede comparar con la otra fotografía aquí (y en el primer comentario de este post).

The Alhambra , literally "the red castle", is a palace and fortress complex constructed during the mid 14th century by the Moorish rulers of the Emirate of Granada in Al-Andalus, occupying the top of the hill of the Assabica on the southeastern border of the city of Granada (Andalusia).

 

From there, you can spot the Albayzin, which is a district of present day Granada, that retains the narrow winding streets of its Medieval Moorish past.

 

Most tourist visit the Albaycin to watch the spectacular sunset light reflected on the Alhambra, however, there is an also spectacular sunset view the other way too, from the Alhambra to Albayzin.

 

After a long time outside Granada and Spain,finally I managed to spend some time shooting here.

La Alhambra es un famoso y extenso complejo palaciego y fortaleza que alojaba al monarca y a la corte del Reino nazarí de Granada.

 

Desde allí se puede divisar el Albayzín, barrio histórico morisco de calles estrechas y cuestas pronunciadas situado en la ciudad de Granada.

 

La mayoría de turístas visitan el Albaicín al atardecer, para ver la luz de la espectacular puesta de sol reflejada en la Alhambra, sin embargo, esa puesta de sol también tiene una vista espectacular en el otro sentido también, de la Alhambra al Albayzín.

 

Después de mucho tiempo fuera de Granada y España, con mucho trabajo, por fin he conseguido echar algún tiempo haciendo fotos por aquí.

Well, not really lost, more like freely given away. Time that is. And maybe it wasn't even given away. Spent might be the better word. Time is a currency we spend after all, every day, every moment. We invest it. And here I invested about two minutes of it at the edge of a mountain lake watching the clouds and the sun on the water and the lone fisherman in his boat and listening to my son play on the rocks behind me and feeling the warmth of this late fall day. I like making long exposures like this because I feel free to get out from behind the camera, otherwise I sometimes find that moments in days like this flash by with me crouched squinting through a viewfinder or poring over an LCD screen, looking at representations of reality rather than reality itself. My pinhole camera taught me how to slow down, step back, look and breathe again. It required me to do so with its long exposures. I have carried that over into my other cameras, aided with strong ND filters to help encourage me to spend an afternoon making one image but looking and feeling and remembering much much more.

 

Many photographers use ND filters to lengthen exposures. Some use ND filters to keep wider apertures in brighter light. I guess in a sense I use those filters for both these things too, but then again I use ND filters for myself as much as I do for my photos. Photography for me is much less about the pictures than you might think. It really isn't about collecting gems that themselves will collect likes, favorites, shares, tweets and retweets. Photography for me isn't about the pictures as it is about a way of being in a place, noticing and seeing and looking and enjoying and experiencing and remembering. The cameras are tools to help me achieve this, the photos are happy by-products. I am glad to blur clouds and water and the occasional fisherman with my ND filters, but I am much happier to use these filters not to blur my own motion but to pause it instead. Go figure.

Jokulsarlon is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers.

 

When it is cloudy and the water is calmed, the image of the icebergs are mirrored on the lake's surface. The possibilities for photography thanks to symmetries are infinite with this conditions. There are small different water currents, which draw lines on that surface, visible like scratches on the mirror. 15 seconds of exposition did the rest.

In Kenya, people on the coasts live on fishing and tourism (lastly), however the first one has been and it will be their main sustenance.

 

Ironically, the increasing levels of piracy off the coast of Somalia have caused an unexpected spin-off, raising the levels of fish in the sea. Fisherman in Kenya have reported bumper catches of shark and shellfish because commercial fishing boats from China, Europe and Japan have been scared away.

 

The massive factory trawlers which used to drain their fish stocks have been scared away and that means there is a huge bounty for local fishermen as well as helping to restore the health of the marine eco-system.

 

That is a different point of view.

 

In the sunny Diani Beach, where the white sand reflects almost all the light from the sun, near Mombasa, Kenya.

En Kenya, las poblaciones de la costa viven de la pesca y el turismo (por último), siendo este primero su sustento principal.

 

Irónicamente, los niveles de piratería en la costa de Somalia en el Océano Índico han provocado un cambio inesperado, elevando los niveles de peces en el mar. Los pescadores de la zona han reportado enormes capturas de tiburón y mariscos porque los barcos de pesca comercial de China, Europa y Japón se han sido alejados.

 

Los barcos-fábrica de gran tamaño que se utilizan para drenar el fondo marino han sido ahuyentados y eso se ha traducido en una recompensa enorme para los pescadores locales, así como ayudar a restablecer la salud de los ecosistemas marinos.

 

Este es un punto de vista diferente.

Everyone is used to living with smarter devices. But imagine living in a smart city where everything from public transport to city lamps are efficient and sustainable. This seemingly simple image of northern Italy from Earth orbit is one of the ways space is paving the way for cities to get smarter.

 

Doorbells, refrigerators and toothbrushes are everyday devices that are now controllable, customisable and designed to make your life run more efficiently by collecting and relaying data using telecommunications satellites.

 

Other space technology is helping to collect valuable data that can result in larger scale changes for cities.

 

Take one of humankind’s greatest achievement in space so far, the International Space Station.

 

Astronauts routinely snap photos of Earth from the orbital outpost, and not just for the likes and retweets. Photographs like this one of northern Italy, taken by ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano during his 2013 mission, provide vital data about city efficiency and sustainability.

 

Researchers have devised a method to assess the environmental impact of artificial light on humans, animals, and the surrounding environment using one of the few sources of publicly-accessible night images of Earth in colour: pictures taken by the astronauts from the International Space Station.

 

City lights are disruptive not only for the lives of nocturnal animals, who suffer from disorientation and behavioural and physiological changes, but also for people. An excess of artificial light before bedtime reduces melatonin production, a hormone linked to sleep. This suppression can lead to negative effects on our health, including breast and prostate cancer.

 

In addition, streetlights account for a large chunk of a country’s energy consumption. As the world grapples with climate change and cleaner sources of energy, how that energy is put to use is a bright topic.

 

Cities at Night is an online platform that invites citizens to flip through the half a million photographs of Earth at night taken so far by astronauts from the Space Station to identify cities. The end result of Cities at Night will be map of Earth that is accessible to anyone.

 

Researchers want to use the map to locate energy inefficiencies in urban cities to urge dimming of the lights. A case in point is the city of Milan. The city replaced their orange sodium lamps with white LEDs. Comparisons of Milan from night as seen from space before and after the change has shown that the white light is worse for the local environment.

 

The data retrieved from these images is vital to drawing risk maps for artificial lighting that can help guide city officials in these types of decisions. And that’s just smart.

Dyrhólaey is a 120-meter high promontory, not far from Vík. The place got its name from the massive arch that the sea has eroded from the headland. (The name literally means "door-hole"). When the sea is calm, big boats can sail through it.

 

From the top of Dyrhólaey there is a great view of the Reynisfjara beach . The headland is thought to have been made in an underwater volcanic eruption late in the glacial period, not unlike the eruption of Surtsey. Several outcrops are in the sea, the highest one called Háidrangur ("High column") is 56 m high. Dyrhólaey has been a natural reserve since 1978. The promontory is widely known among sailors as "Portland", and English trawler fishermen used to call it "Blow hole". There are also amazing rock formations all along the beach where one can climb.

 

The sepia tones of this image are totally natural, there was a lot of ash from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano blowing in the wind that day, which turned the sun light pink.

 

If you check it, this is not a only sepia image, you can find some bright blues on the ocean and sky, and some dark greens on the rocks at the background.

 

Again, a long exposition captured well the mood at the place, shaping the big waves and catching the ash and sand on the air.

El Dyrhólaey es un promontorio de 120 metros de alto, cerca de Vik. El lugar obtiene su nombre del arco que el mar ha erosionado bajo la península en la que se encuentra (El nombre significa literalmente "puerta - agujero"). Cuando el mar está en calma, incluso los barcos grandes pueden navegar a través de él.

 

Desde lo alto del Dyrhólaey, se puede apreciar una gran vista de la playa Reynisfjara. Existen formaciones de rocas puntiagudas creadas por erupciones volcánica submarinas, de entre los cuales el más alto llamado Háidrangur ("alta columna "), que tiene 56m de altura. Dyrhólaey ha sido una reserva natural desde 1978.

 

Los tonos sepia de esta imagen son totalmente naturales, había un montón de cenizas del volcán Eyjafjallajökull soplando en el viento esa tarde, que le daban a la luz del sol ese aspecto rosa.

 

Si se aprecia bien, la imagen no está compuesta solo por tonos sepias y negros, sino que se pueden encontrar algunos azules suaves en el océano y el cielo, y verdes oscuros en las rocas del fondo.

 

Una vez más, una larga exposición ayudó a capturar el ambiente del lugar, la trayectoria de las grandes olas y capturó la ceniza y arena en el aire.

In the eastern part of South Iceland, between Jokulsarlon and the river Markarfljot there are vast alluvial or outwash plains, black sanded beaches and lava fields with only narrow strips of lowlands, which limit agricultural activities and therefore the area is less populated.

 

For example, the Lakagigar crater series, a few miles inland from Kirkjubæjarklaustur, it produced the largest lava flow ever witnessed in historical times anywhere in the world, during the Skaftareldar eruption of 1783. Another large lava field is the Thjorsa river lava field which flowed from the Veidivotn crater area all the way into the sea about 8.000 years ago.

 

These lava fields, are a rich substrate for many vegetal species, like this star shaped. I just shot with the 50mm, any little detail is a great scenario.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls of the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. A local boy found the chest years later, but was only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again.

 

This waterfall is just under the "now well-known" Eyjafjallajökull volcano, and it is very close the sea, in the South shore of Iceland.

 

In photography, it is difficult to get an idea of the dimensions of a place without a reference, something that we already know, like a person. This person, in this image, is the beautiful girl who was travelling with me, driving through Iceland. She enjoyed a lot this waterfall, running from the outside to the inside, getting surrounded by a double rainbow and getting totally wet.

La de Skógafoss es una de las cascadas más grandes del país, con una anchura de 25 metros y un desnivel de 60 metros. Debido a la cantidad de agua la cascada produce siempre, un arco iris simple o doble cuando hay sol. Según la leyenda, el primer colono vikingo en la zona, Þrasi Þórólfsson, enterró un tesoro en una cueva detrás de la cascada. Un chico lo encontró años más tarde, pero sólo fue capaz de coger el anillo antes de que volviera a desaparecer.

 

Esta cascada está justo debajo del famoso (también fuera de Islandia) volcán Eyjafjallajökull, y se encuentra en la costa sur de Islandia, muy cerca del mar.

 

En una fotografía es difícil hacerse una idea de las dimensiones de un lugar sin una referencia, algo que ya conozcamos, como una persona. En esta fotografía, esa persona es la preciosa chica que viajaba conmigo, conduciendo a través de Islandia. Disfrutó mucho de esta cascada, corriendo desdee el exterior al interior, para rodearse de un arco iris doble y salir totalmente mojada de la catarata.

As I said, in photography, it is difficult to get an idea of the dimensions of a place without a reference, something that we already know, like a person. And Landmannalaugar is one of those places, which looks small in pictures but it is really huge. Please, check the spot walking in the middle of the frame, it is a person.

 

Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano Hekla in southern section of Iceland's highlands. Historically, it has been the only "safe place" in Iceland for exiled outlaw people, like the famous outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur.

 

The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, as well as hot springs, crater lakes and steam fumaroles. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white

En una fotografía es difícil hacerse una idea de las dimensiones de un lugar sin una referencia, algo que ya conozcamos, como una persona. Y Landmannalaugar es uno de esos lugares que parece pequeño en fotografías, aunque en realidad es enorme e impresionante. Si se presta atención al centro de la foto es posible ver un punto andando, es una persona.

 

Landmannalaugar, que en islandés significa, las pozas de la gente, es una región cercana al volcán Hekla en la zona sur de las Tierras Altas de Islandia.

 

Históricamente, ha sido el único "lugar seguro" en Islandia para los foragidos que eran desterrados, como el famoso Fjalla-Eyvindur.

 

El área destaca por la presenciae de inusuales elementos geológicos, como las montañas de riolita de tonos multicolores, campos de lava expansiva, así como los lagos en cráteres, aguas termales, y fumarolasde vapor.

Todas las montañas de la zona muestran un amplio espectro de colores incluyendo rosa, marrón, verde, amarillo, azul, púrpura,

negro y blanco, debido a los minerales de origen volvánico que la componen.

Another shot from the same place.

 

Svartifoss (Black Fall) is the name of this waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which give rise to its name. The hexagonal columns were formed inside a lava flow which cooled extremely slowly, giving rise to crystallization.

 

The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges.

 

It was a cloudy-cloudy day, so why not shoot on B&W, anyway it was the shape of the rocks and the moving water what interested to my eye. I thought a long exposition would work for the image, the bright water, the dark stones....

 

Miss my b&w film camera loaded with an ISO 400 film, with its grain, its contrast....

Svartifoss (Cascada Negra) es el nombre de esta cascada en Parque Nacional de Skaftafell (Islandia), y es una sus atracciones más populares. Está rodeada por columnas de lava oscura, que dan origen a su nombre. Las columnas, de forma hexagonal, se formaron dentro de una erupcion de lava que se enfrió muy lentamente, mediante cristalización.

 

La base de la cascada destaca por sus rocas afiladas, cuyas secciones hexagonales son erosionadas en los bordes constantemente por el agua que cae.

 

Era un día nublado, muy nublado, ¿por qué no disparar en blanco y negro?. De todos modos lo único que me interesaba era el contraste de la forma de las rocas y el agua en movimiento. Una larga exposición me daría esta imagen, el agua clara, la piedras oscuras ....

 

En ese momento eché de menos mi cámara de película cargada con una película de ISO400, con sus matices, su contraste, su grano ....

In photography,every image we take is a result of a variety of components, within we could find technique, skills, talent and work. If we could measure the amount of these components in getting a good shot, probably we could find something like this:

 

5% of equipment (SLR, point and shoot, lenses, filters, tripod...)

10% of technique (how to use your equipment)

10% of skills and photographic eye

80% of work

 

105% Total (....because work brings you more than the 100% you could actually get!!)

 

Previous work, like scouting an unkown place, planning your future shot, thinking where and when to shoot, preparing yourself for the light and any other variable that could affect your shot brings you all. You can be talented, you can have an excellent camera and lenses, you can learn how to use your gear...but most of the "WOW!!" of your shot falls on your work.

 

In this one, we get to Hvítserkur around 5 p.m. in the afternoon, looking for the place, studying the tides of the water, the weather, the sunrise.... just to know what we would get later on this shot.

 

After that, we went to bed early, and then we woke up at midnight, for the show.

 

Hvítserkur is the last remains of a central volcano, it is an injection of magma directly to the sea about 15m high. Legend states that this is a troll turned into stone when he was surprised by the sun while attacking a nearby abbey with rocks.

 

The sea erosion has carved holes through its foundations and sculptured it in the unique shape it is today. Some say it is in the shape of a petrified monster.

En fotografía, cada imagen que tomamos es el resultado de una variedad de componentes, entre los que encontramos la técnica, la habilidad, el talento y el trabajo. Si pudiéramos medir la cantidad de estos componentes cuando conseguimos una buena imagen, probablemente podríamos encontrar algo como esto:

 

5% de equipo (SLR, apuntar y disparar, lentes, filtros, trípode ...)

10% de técnica (cómo utilizar el equipo)

10% de habilidad y ojo fotográfico

80% de trabajo

 

105% Total (.... porque el trabajo aporta más del 100% posible)

 

El trabajo previo, como explorar un lugar desconocido, planificar la futura imagen, pensar dónde y cuándo disparar o prepararse para la luz y cualquier otra variable, puede afectar al resultado final. Se puede tener talento, se puede tener la cámara más cara y las mejores lentes, se puede aprender a utilizar bien el equipo ... pero la mayoría lo que creará una imagen espectacular recae en el trabajo.

 

Esta foto,que está hecha cuando llegamos a Hvítserkur alrededor de las 5 de la tarde, buscando el lugar, estudiando las mareas del agua, el tiempo, la salida del sol .... sólo para prever lo que veríamos más adelante, como en esta foto.

 

Después de eso, fuimos a la cama temprano, y luego nos levantamos a media noche, para disfrutar del espectáculo.

 

Hvítserkur es lo último que queda de un volcán central, y es una roca que emergió de un brote de magma directamente en el Océano que tiene unos 15m de altura. La leyenda dice que se trata de un troll que se convirtió en piedra cuando fue sorprendido por el sol, mientras atacaba una abadía cercana al mar.

 

La erosión del mar ha esculpido sus agujeros en la base de la roca y ha esculpido, lentamente, la forma única que tiene hoy.... parecida a la de un monstruo petrificado.

Hvítserkur es lo último que queda de un volcán central, y es una roca que emergió de un brote de magma directamente en el Océano que tiene unos 15m de altura. La leyenda dice que se trata de un troll que se convirtió en piedra cuando fue sorprendido por el sol, mientras atacaba una abadía cercana al mar.

 

La erosión del mar ha esculpido sus agujeros en la base de la roca y ha esculpido, lentamente, la forma única que tiene hoy.... parecida a la de un monstruo petrificado.

 

Está hecho justo antes de la anterior imagen a las 2.30 de la mañana, desde lo alto del acantilado donde hay una vista impresionante de Hvítserkur y el mar. La marea estaba alta en ese momento, así que podría jugar con el agua.

Just opposite Dyrhólaey, not far from Vík, you can find Reynisdrangar, which is the name for the basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall (top left on the image), formed by perfect hexagonal stacks.

 

However, legend states that these stacks are three trolls turned into stone when they were surprised by the first sun light. The name of the trolls are: Skessudrangar, Landdrangar y Langhamrar.

 

This place is located in the same Reynisfjara beach . The headland is thought to have been made in an underwater volcanic eruption late in the glacial period, not unlike the eruption of Surtsey. Several outcrops are in the sea, the highest one called Háidrangur ("High column") is 56 m high.

 

A long exposition captured well the mood at the place, shaping the big waves, capturing the sea movement against the sharp shapes of the rocks.

Justo en frente del Dyrhólaey, cerca de Vik, se puede encontrar Reynisdrangar,que es el nombre de las columnas de basalto que hay en el mar, situadas debajo de la montaña Reynisfjall (a la izquierda en la imagen), formada tambien por columnas hexagonales.

 

Sin embargo, dice la leyenda que estas columnas son en realidad tres trolls convertidos en piedra, cuando fueron sorprendidos por los primeros rayos de sol. El nombre de los trolls son: Skessudrangar, Landdrangar y Langhamrar.

 

Este lugar se encuentra en la misma playa Reynisfjara. Existen formaciones de rocas puntiagudas creadas por erupciones volcánica submarinas, de entre los cuales el más alto llamado Háidrangur ("alta columna "), que tiene 56m de altura.

 

una larga exposición ayudó a capturar el ambiente del lugar, la trayectoria de las olas, capturando el movimiento del mar contra las afiladas formas de las rocas.

Grundarfjörður is a small town, situated in the north of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west of Iceland. The town is situated in front of an impressive mountain range which has a slightly alpine look. On the sea side, there is a beautiful mountain called Kirkjufell which is a diverted piece of the mountain strip Mýrarhyrna. The mountain forms a small peninsula.

 

The town itself is a charming, quiet, nice fishing village. Another awesome hidden corner in Iceland.

 

This shot was made the day after visiting it, very close to this picture (also in the first comment) just outside the village, one day so windy that you could hardly stand under the Snæfellsjökull volcano, where Journey to the Center of the Earth begins, by Jules Verne.

Grundarfjörður es un pequeño pueblo, situado en el norte de la península de Snæfellsnes en el Oeste de Islandia. El pueblo está situado justo en frente de una impresionante cordillera y a su lado, hay una bonita montaña llamada Kirkjufell, que forma una pequeña península.

 

Grundarfjörður es en sí mismo un encantador y tranquilo agradable pueblo pesquero. Otro rincón escondido e increíble de Islandia.

 

Ésta foto fue hecha al día siguiente, muy cerca de esta foto (también en los comentarios) a la salida del pueblo, un día muy muy ventoso. Tanto que casi no se podía estar de pie debajo del Snæfellsjokull, lugar donde comienza el Viaje al Centro de la Tierra, de Julio Verne.

Last night, a lunar eclipse was visible in many places all across the world. This astronomical phenomenon takes place when earth moves between the sun and the moon, casting its enormous shadow on the lunar surface.

 

This is the view yesterday night over the Alhambra fortress, from Albayzin, with an awesome view of the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada, which is more than 3000 metres high and delayed the moon view until the last states of the lunar eclipse.

Ayer por la noche, hubo un eclipse lunar que fue visible en lugares de todo el mundo. Este fenómeno astronómico se produce cuando la Tierra se mueve entre el Sol y la Luna, proyectando su enorme sombra sobre la superficie lunar.

 

Esto es (más o menos) lo que se pudo ver anoche desde una plaza del Albayzín. Una vista impresionante del eclipse sobre la fortaleza de la Alhambra y Sierra Nevada, que con sus más de 3000 metros de altura retrasó la vista del eclipse durante un buen tiempo.

Fjallsárlón is a glacier lake at the south end of the Icelandic glacier Vatnajökull. Fjallsjökull which is part of the bigger glacier reaches down to the water of the lake and some ice-bergs are drifting by on its surface.

It is situated not far from Skaftafell National Park and the better known glacier lake Jökulsárlón. From the glacier lake Breiðárlón a little river flows into the Fjallsárlón.

Above, there is looming the famous volcano Öræfajökull.

 

When it is cloudy and the water is calmed, the image of the icebergs are mirrored on the lake's surface. The possibilities for photography thanks to symmetries are infinite with this conditions.

Fjallsárlón es un lago glaciar, en el extremo sur del glaciar Vatnajökull en Islandia. Fjallsjökull, que es la lengua de ese glaciarque llega hasta el lago, rompe y va dejando bloques de hielo e icebergs a la deriva sobre su superficie.

 

Se encuentra no muy lejos del Parque Nacional Skaftafell y prácticamente al lado del conocido lago glaciar Jökulsárlón, sin embargo este sí es un lago natural.

Desde el lago glaciar Breiðárlón un pequeño río desemboca en el Fjallsárlón.

Por encima del glaciar, se asoma el famoso volcán Öræfajökull.

 

Cuando está nublado y las aguas tranquilas, la imagen de los icebergs se refleja en la superficie del lago. Es entonces cuando las posibilidades para hacer buenas fotografías se disparan gracias a las simetrías.

Sunset on a stormy day at Cuernos del Paine, Chile.

Because bad weather is good photography weather, sometimes a ray of light between the clouds can give a more dramatic image than plain sunny daylight. The reward is way better with all the cold, rain and suffering!!

In January 2009 (one year ago), UN proclaimed that Kenya's drought and food shortages were expected to last until March 2010, seven months longer than previously projected.

 

Unhopefully, they were right.... and it is hitting the economy of the country, since the death of a large number of animals posed a risk to the country's tourism industry that is famed for its wildlife.

 

The most affected parks and reserves were the Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park that recorded the highest number of collected animal carcasses. It is estimated that the parks lost 40 per cent of animals.

 

But besides the animals, human lifes are in risk also. With no cattle, no harvest, no food, surviving is very hard.

 

And it is not just a problem for Kenya. Aid agencies estimate more than 23 million people will need food aid in the Horn of Africa region. It is becoming evident the inability of most African countries to address climate change impacts, a climate change they have created.

En enero de 2009 (hace un año), las Naciones Unidas comunicaron que la sequía en Kenia se esperaba que durase hasta marzo de 2010, siete meses más de lo esperado inicialmente.

 

Desafortunadamente, estaban en lo cierto .... y está afectando a la economía del

país severamente, ya que la muerte de un gran número de animales salvajes plantea un gran riesgo para la industria del turismo de un país que es famoso por su fauna.

 

Los parques y las reservas más afectados están siendo el Parque Nacional de Amboseli y el Parque Nacional de Tsavo, que han registrado el mayor número muertes de animales. Se estima que estos parques han perdido el 40 de su fauna.

 

Pero además de los animales, están en riesgo numerosas vidas humanas. Sin ganado, sin cosecha que recoger, sin comida, es muy difícil sobrevivir.

 

Y no es sólo un problema de Kenya. Las ONGs estiman que más de 23 millones de personas necesitarán ayuda alimentaria en la región del Cuerno de África. Está quedando patente la incapacidad de gran parte de paises de África para hacer frente a los efectos del cambio climático, un cambio climático que ellos no han creado.

A trip to Kenya is supposed to be about animals, about Natural Reserves, about wildness. And so we did.

 

It has been a very hard year for everyone, including animals, the drought is still going on, many of them are dying, surviving.

En un viaje a Kenia se supone que e verán numerosos animales, se visitaran Reservas Naturales, se verá el lado salvaje de la naturaleza. Y así fue.

 

Ha sido un año muy duro para todos, incluidos los animales, la sequía que todavía persiste, ha matado a muchos de ellos, otros sobreviven como pueden.

 

En Amboseli, la frontera entre Kenia y Tanzania.
