Wanda and I just retuned today from a week on St. Thomas. Had a wonderful time spent swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, shopping, eating, and of course, a little photography too! We miss it already!

Here's another first of the season for me, a Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla) in our Butterfly bush.

These birds leave us in Spring when it gets warm and retune in the Fall, and stay for the Winter. I'm happy to see them back!

Sunday after retuning home from the Camellia show I stopped for few minutes at Cold spring harbor, as you see it is solid frozen with no sailboats.

Thank you for your views and comments my friends..

Have a great new week..Cheers

My first encounter of the Purple Hairstreak, i managed to see around a dozen of these beauties all fluttering around 20ft above my head in the canopy of the Oak tree.

This one came down for only a miute or so before retuning to the skies.

My time is still limited at the moment on Flickr but thanks to you all for your constant visits and comments, i wish you all well and hope to be back soon.

I love observing the interaction between animals and having a chance to photograph them. The Short-eared Owls have retuned to their local overwintering grounds and the local Northern Harriers are not happy about it. In this case the Owl seems to be the aggressor. All the action happened very far off so this is a deeply cropped image. Taken with Sony a1, Sony 400mm lens, Sony 2x extender. - so I was shooting at 800mm.

** People who follow my stream will know I am not that good at identifying British Butterflies . Therefore I am extremely unlikely to get this ID correct given it's a butterfly from Thailand . This was taken in the countryside near Chiang Mai close by a river . I have done a little research and I think it might be Ethope diademoides diademoides White diadem. However I could be completely incorrect .

My final post before Trump becomes President again. I could go on at length but at will leave it as this . There will be a multitude of lies during his presidency . The first lie might well be the biggest, at his inauguration he will take the oath of office saying ;

“ I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. “

Pretty rich from someone who tried to subvert and pervert the election result in 2020. I am reminded sadly of women who are the subject of domestic abuse who keeping retuning to the abuser thinking its going to be better next time

THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT TO MY STREAM

Another woodland walk today. Followed another path today to see where I ended up. This part is the edge of the woodland just before retuning to the car.

This picture was taken on a 60 second exposure and a very high ISO. With the naked eye it wasn't visible. I really enjoyed this sort of photography and look forward to retuning to Iceland to try again soon.

The smaller boat is Cygnet of Harwich, built in 1881, this 16 ton barge is almost as old as the maltings here at Snape.

The larger Barge is Onderneming, Onderneming:

built in 1899, she measures 28.7m in length by 5.5m wide (beam) with a draft (amount of the boat under water) of 1.6m. She is fittted with a DAF 1160 engine (160hp) though of course she was originally purely a sailing barge and this is a later addition.

Built in the Van Den Andel yard in Papendercht, Holland as a single mast sailing Klipper of 23m. De-rigged in 1963 she continued to work as a motor barge under the name of ‘Johanna’, carrying general cargos on the Rhine between Lobith and Emerich in Holland, and between Duisberg and Wesel in Germany. She continued trading under the skippers Johannes Meeuwsen and Jan De Hoog until he 1970’s. In the 1980’s she was used as a boat-building workshop before being retuned to sail under her original name of Onderneming and operating as a charter barge under sail out of Harlingen in Friesland. In 2009 she was brought to London for restoration and conversion to a residential and cruising barge

The new year has certainly started out with surprises and new beginnings for me. My long lost love, my angel....My Silver has retuned and my heart is once more made whole. 'Rivendell' (1891)

'Rivendell' was built between 1891 and 1893. It was designed as a convalescent hospital and its most famous patient was the Australian poet Henry Lawson who, whilst there, recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, wrote 'The Unknown Patient'.

Over 70,000 patients have convalesced at the hospital, including retuned soldiers from the 1914-18 and 1939-45 World Wars.

The name Rivendell is derived from the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien and was chosen because in 'The Hobbit' Rivendell is a place to rest and recuperate – a sanctuary for those on difficult journeys.

Currently Rivendell is a school for children and adolescents with serious mental health issues.

A photo of an old maple tree taken near the Oomine ridge. It is Yamamomiji that is a subspecies of Momiji (Japanese maple, Acer palmatum).

The maple genus are usually understory plants growing under tall trees. But this is an unusual lone tree in a grassland and so huge.

This area was converted to a farm after WW II. The farmer who retuned from Manchuria tried to clear all the trees in his property, but could not remove this due to its deep roots. After several decades, it now attracts spectators in autumn .

I take hundreds of photos on my holidays unless the weather is exceptionally bad. This is a sort of update after remembering how upset I was when using my new Sony A7RM4A with my Sony FE 50mm F1.2 lens.. The noise was so bad I was desperately upset..

However back home on my PC it was gone in an instant using a noise reduction filter. Of course this was another belly shot and I would have loved to get something similar from this same area last week when we were here for the week but I simply didn’t have the energy required..this shot has not been on Flickr previously but a similar one taken at the same shoot.

I will be uploading a couple of photos over the next couple of days from the east coast as we were there all last week to clean and ready the caravan for the winter…hope everyone is well. You have yet to hear of our ( grand tour and all of our mishaps ) hopefully soon. I thought retirement meant lots of spare time but we have dental/ optician/ haircuts/ hearing aid - Jonathan’s which keeps screaming like a banshee even after having it retuned this very afternoon…

We loved being at Winthorpe Skegness last week and I got my chalet fix lol….( just one favourite shot mind you and nothing too special but we do love being there apart from the next to useless WiFi…..Sue :)

Addendum…..

There is a quietude here just past the hustle and bustle of the busier seaside towns that both Jonathan and myself love…

This is another unexpected statue in Odaiba.

As you are aware, the original Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the USA in 1886.

A 1/4 replica of the statue was given back to France by the U.S. citizens in France in 1989, which was placed near the Grenelle Bridge on the Île aux Cygnes in the Seine.

After the visits of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 and 1854, the Tokugawa shogunate reluctantly signed trade treaties not only with the USA but also with major Western powers including France in 1858. They were known to be “unequal” treaties in many aspects, which caused a nation-wide resentment leading finally to the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

Tokyo is a sister city of Paris.

The statue in Paris was rented out to Tokyo in 1998 and placed in Odaiba for one year as a symbol of the event celebrating the 140th year of friendship between the two countries.

After the statue was retuned to Paris, people demanded its replica be placed at the same site, which was realised in 2000 with the cooperation from the French government.

It is interesting in that Rainbow Bridge in the background was constructed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries that was once managed by Matsukata Koujirou whose Western art collection was confiscated by the French government and is now exhibited in the National Western Art Museum.

I also wonder how the iron man Egawa who constructed the Odaiba battery also in the background would have felt about this sight.

The photo shows that a large number of spectators are inbound tourists.

Wind was whipping at Wilpen as the Keenan switch was in route to serve the Viking Explosives plant during a snowstorm. The best intentions proved futile, and the attempt was abandoned with the crew retuning back to the yard for another attempt for another day.

You will in a minute if you read this. I have practically hid in my computer/printing room all day today as the men from a local company came to fit new cladding, guttering fascia boards and soffits plus new insulation. The men arrived in a van and knocked on the back door. Jonathan welcomed them and said he had parked up to save them a space immediately outside our back gate.

Well the anger of one particular man had to be heard to be believed. " What ! Out there ? We need to be outside your front door. Rather perplexed Jonathan told them there was no parking outside our front door as we face out onto a footpath which the salesman had clearly seen when standing in our front garden. Things rapidly went from bad to worse throughout the day. My already shredded nerves are in ribbons honestly so I just shut the door and played.......they are retuning on Monday :(

since the grandsons are so close by now I decided to raise a few swallowtails 23 to be exact and let them in on the cycle of life...out of 23 ...20 emerged...and an endless supply of parsley in the flower boxes on the back porch and keeping an eye on them as they grew fatter and fatter, hoping the lizards didn't have them for supper..mercy my parsley was chewed down to nubs! BUT...once we added the sticks for the cocoons to hang off of we added them to a large mesh tent and left them in a quiet undisturbed location... we were blessed with four of them about 11 days days later and so it continued over the next five days...the one pictured is literally about one hour old ....as they emerged and slowly got the blood pumped into their wings some time later I gently put my hand in and brought them out onto the flowers...in another hour or so they slowly started fluttering around the garden...life the ever evolving cycle ...all retuned back to where it all began...in the garden...

Feels like this semester's on wheels, getting busy already :/

I'm so happy our winter birds are retuning. This morning I saw many Blue-winged Teal and was lucky to catch one flying by.

Sometimes it pays to scout around for Osprey retuning to their nests. It seems they have returned to northern Colorado. This female was returning to her nest with a late lunch in her talons. Let the Osprey season begin!!!!!!!

Snow geese retuning to Bosque del Apache Refuge in New Mexico after a day of foraging along the Rio Grande. Flock after flock arrived from the north as the setting sun turned all the willows red. I had never seen anything like this constantly developing scene, and I remember it vividly today: the red willows, the dark clouds, the white geese honking and coming in seemingly endless formations! (from the archives, 12/81)

One of the sights of the summer for me.

This tiny butterfly had to work hard to protect its' little corner of the meadow. It continuously saw off other butterflies, then retuned to its' sunny patch of grasses and flowers.

Note: The 127th and, under current plans, last F-16 to be converted into an optionally-piloted QF-16 full scale aerial target was delivered to the U.S. Air Force recently . The aircraft I caught today (QF-073) retuned from Tyndall AFB, Florida to DM to fix an issue and rework.

I heard a song today by the Countrymen about these trees called "Trees on the Hill". It reminded me of an image I had almost forgotten about. The song is about retuning home to Cornwall and seeing these trees at Knappworthy on the Devon/Cornwall border. They are often referred to as the "nearly home trees"

I'm very grateful for all your visits and would like to thank you now for stopping by, and any comments you may leave. Much appreciated, John...

Hidden beauty of an old upright, revealed during annual retuning :-)

We started hiking for the high lake at good time. Its a 20 minute hike after which you open your eyes to the beautiful lake.

Casually called Lake 3, it is the most beautiful of them all. And the biggest as well.

In the picture above, we are retuning, and exploring the thick forest. The scenery in return is sublime. The views are outstanding, the colors are in numbers and the perspectives are rich.

I captured the BO on his retune trip back to the nest. They are so fast that sometimes it is a real problem to keep up with the. I was happy to have captured this when he returned.
