Emerging Elites

As a result of declining patronage for the arts in the imperial Mughal court at Delhi, many artists found new support from regional rulers. Those who went to work for the Nawabs, meaning lords or governors, at Murshidabad in the region of Bengal in Eastern India, developed a distinctive style of painting characterized by a cool color palette, formal gardenscapes, and experimentation with western perspective and recession into space.

The Nawabs of Murshidabad had a decidedly checkered relationship with the British East India Company; some effected military defeats on the British, while others were close allies. The British had considerable interest in this region of Bengal, because it was a center for the production and export of textiles highly sought after in the European markets.

This is getting better: I submitted a reference picture, which dramatically improved the wire shape & position. There is still this "Invisalign style" stuff around the teeth. The next attempt was successful.

Newington Green offers its history on a plate. There is an illustrated timeline is at its its western gate. It dates from around 2007 and is an outcome of community action.

For me this a Robinson moment. I have found an image that illustrates the changes that have happened here in this place over time from its early days to the present time. I take a photograph for my visual notebook. If I follow Robinson's methodology my next step is to attribute transformative potential to my picture.

I note that within a couple of centuries from 1480 to 1660 Newington Green went from medieval village to royal playground to place of dissidence. That transformation would, I think, interest Robinson.

Let's begin with the early years. I read that: "The Prelude of the revolution that laid the foundation of the capitalist mode of production, was played in the last third of the 15th, and the first decade of the 16th century. A mass of free proletarians was hurled on the labour-market by the breaking up of the bands of feudal retainers..."

If my project is to illustrate the development of capitalism with pictures of (or inspired by) my locality then a Prelude based on this quotation seems appropriate. The above quotation comes not from a history book but from a critique of political economy (I refer to Volume I of Capital by Karl Marx, it's on page 748 of an old Lawrence & Wishart edition, a momento of my student days in the early '70s).

Kishiwada Castle, located in Osaka, was built by Koide Hidemasa, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in 1582, near the site of where Kusunoki Masashige built a fort in the 1300s. In 1640, ownership of the castle was transferred to Okabe Norikatsu and the Okabe family maintained possession of the castle and the Kishiwada fief until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

In 1827 lightning destroyed the castle’s main keep and much of the remaining part of the castle was destroyed during the fighting between the Tokugawa and Imperial forces during the civil strife associated with the Meiji Restoration. The current three-story ferroconcrete keep was built in 1954, but it has been confirmed that the original donjon was 5 stories. The moat and the outer stone walls are all that remain of the original castle. All other structures, including the gate, are reconstructions.

The renowned garden designer, Mirei Shigemori, constructed the Hachi Jin no Niwa rock garden in 1953 using chlorite schist from Okinoshima Island in Wakayama Prefecture and white sand from the Shirakawa River in Kyoto. He personally chose all the larger stones and arranged the garden based on the Chinese concept of the battle formation of the eight elements of heaven: earth, wind, clouds, dragons, tigers, birds and snakes.

And, here they are, reunited as they should be, total cost, $4.98.

First, Bethany has to take her retainer out.

IMPORTANT: the retainer unscrews in reverse to normal... not righty-tighty, but righty-loosey. The shutter dial with a correct pin spanner would unscrew the conventional way.

This is a statue of the fierce Sengoku daimyo, Katō Kiyomasa, who although was a loyal retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, played a key role in supporting Tokugawa Ieyasu's consolidation after Hideyoshi's death in 1598.

The quintessential Sengoku bad-ass, Kiyomasa was not only a terror on the battlefield, as proven time and time again in Japan as well as during the Japanese invasion of Korea where he tangled with Korean and Ming Chinese forces (not to mention tigers), he was also a master castle builder. This tough guy hated Noh theater and forbade his retainers from partaking in it. The irony of the this is that his statue stands in front of the Nagoya Noh theater across from Nagoya Castle.

And no, that's not a toilet bowl cleaner he is holding in his hand. :)

This is the other end of the brass wire fed through the unleaded insert in the fuel filler.

I've since discovered that the unleaded insert is no longer a requirement. The goal posts keep moving.

The landing light is a prime area for rot due to the potential to trap moisture. Here the lens retainer is not sealed.

On the way back! We have FREEDOM!

Back Cover Lock Retainer

Unscrews counter-clockwise.

1. With top washer removed, you will see a snap ring or "cir-clip" retainer holding the assembly together. Notice in these photos that the ratchet wheel has teeth angled in one direction, like a saw blade. This needs to be replaced facing the same way - so the pawl will acting as a "stop".

2. Cir-clip will simply pry off - but you definitely do not want to damage it. Here, a small pick inserted into one of the tiny holes is a useful tool. Be careful not to lose the clip if it springs off of the boss... which is indented to hold the clip in place here.

3. Next, a "THIN" steel washer is on top of a very this plastic friction washer. Din't lose or break the delicate plastic part whencleaning off any grit, rust or dried on old grease. But, it will still work - even if broken! If these are stuck on or stuck together with dried in grease they can be removed more easily ince the ratchet wheel is removed.

I don't' mean for it to happen but it does, the backyard becomes neglected.
