Chris Hondros (March 14, 1970 – April 20, 2011) was killed in Libya yesterday covering the rebellion in Misrata while covering the conflict for Getty Images with the local militia along with other photojournalists. Tim Hetherington of "Restrepo" fame was also killed and several other photojournalists were wounded in the mortar attack.

I met Chris back in 1990 when I first began working at Technician and later Agromeck, the student newspaper and yearbook for NC State. Even then, you could see his talent and professionalism and his willingness to mentor others. I got to know him for several years there and work with him on a few assignments shooting sporting and campus events. He was always an encouraging photographic editor and an engaging friend. After we graduated and moved on to different parts of the world, he would still reach out to me and find ways to keep in touch, sometimes out of the blue. A year after graduating, i was in school in Delaware and he just showed up on campus one day and found me because he was there for the day, we had a fun day out shooting on the campus. Ten years later, we were meeting up at Cup O' Joe in Raleigh with him showing me some of his early conflict photos. And in 2009 when I was going on a roadtrip to Nova Scotia, he invited me to visit him in Brooklyn for a few days. The photo above is from that visit, waking up in the morning, he was was up making his famous omlettes for us - red peppers, fine cheese and avocado, if memory serves - and it was quite excellent. His flat was somewhat spartan but did have his piano and books and many photographs, by him and by others. He took time out to take me around NYC, down to ground zero, actually into the UN building since he had press credentials! We ate wonderful food at an Italian place near his flat in Dumbo and at one of his favorite Afghan restaurants another night. He had not seen HDR photography before so I showed him that and took pictures of the inside of his flat that he used to rent the place on Craigslist later when he was on assignment. His intelligence, generosity and compassion was greatly appreciated by me and experienced by many. I am very grateful for having known him and better for it. He is already missed. Rest in Peace my friend.
