Western white pine (WWP, Pinus monticola) with necrotic needle spots. These needle spots are one indicator of major gene resistance (MGR) to blister rust. Sow year 2015. Dorena Genetic Resource Center, Cottage Grove, Oregon.

Most WWP progeny are very susceptible, but some parent trees have major gene resistance (MGR) and their progeny segregate for resistant:susceptible with ‘wild’ type races of the rust. The necrotic needle spots are one indicator of these resistant seedlings. However, this type of resistance can be overcome by virulent vcr2 races of the rust.

DGRC is a regional genetics facility for the Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6), and has worked with developing disease resistance in forest trees since 1966. DGRC is also involved in genetic conservation and other genetic related issues in forest trees, as well as being the national USFS lead for Tree Climbing certification, and is also active in native species restoration and conservation education. DGRC has many partners and coooperators in OR & WA and beyond, including Canada, Hawaii, and tribes. Although a USFS facility, DGRC is located on BLM land.

Patty Baxley, a retired annuitant on temporary duty at Europe District as a budget analyst, receives a Certificate of Achievement from Col. Matthew Tyler, district commander, during an award ceremony March 12 at the Amelia Earhart Center in Wiesbaden, Germany. Baxley, who joined the Resource Management Office last September, provided excellent training, leadership, insightful recommendations and fiscal discipline following the loss of several key personnel, including the RM chief. She improved business processes by developing a series of monthly reports that can be consistently updated. Baxley is returning to her home in Charleston, South Carolina. Speakers: Spencer Thomas (Grenada), Greg Hunt (Australia), Dr Naoko Ishii (Japan), Dr Melchior Mataki (Solomon Islands), Ronny Jumeau (Seychelles), Tony DeBrum (Marshall Islands).
Australia's Environment Minister Greg Hunt talked about championing Asia Pacific rainforest recovery project, importance of blue carbon in mangroves and developing mechanisms for measuring blue carbon. Talked about GBR under stress from development and efforts to improve water quality with a long term 2050 plan. He said gov inherited 5 massive dredge proposals and had progressively knocked each of them out. Put in place recently a law to ban forever dredge spoil disposal on GBR.
Support partner for Coral Triangle Initiative. $13 mil so far contributed to this initiative.
Involved in setting up a blue carbon partnership with donor states, small island states and private bodies for enhancing blue carbon storehouses.
With the Green Climate Fund Hunt said Australia had contributed $200 mil with Australia's main role as co-chair will be to facilitate rapid access to funds for approved projects, to add decisive capacity.

‘Unusual’ transmission of blister rust disease through root grafting: Western white pine (Pinus monticola) with white pine blister rust canker at the base of the tree ~11 years after inoculation with Cronartium ribicola, as a two-year old seedling (sow year 2004).
