Alan Seatter, Deputy Director General, Coordination of resource-efficiency policies & instruments, DG Environment, European Commission
The fifth in a series of Brussels events on various aspects of energy R&D policy organized by Science|Business with the support of BP.
The European Commission’s Roadmap for a Resource Efficient Europe highlights the challenge of sustaining growth in the 21st Century as vital resources grow scarce, including those used to produce energy. By 2050 the EU needs to achieve a 4 to 10-fold increase in resource efficiency, and major gains are needed by 2020.
Policy makers must now launch a vital shift to resource-lean production, and eco-innovation. What new technologies and innovations can deliver large-scale gains? How can a systems approach to policy speed progress? And how can governments accelerate breakthroughs by creating market conditions that reward resource efficiency?

The library at the Swan Lake Nature House is an amazing resource for local (or visiting) naturalists. On the other wall is a children's section of nature-related books, too.
Oh, and there is a honey-bee hive in this room too!

Alberto de Campo presenting “Varia zoosystematica profundorum”
a project he did together with students of the Generative Art/Computational Art Class.
The Generative Art/Computational Art class at UdK (Prof. Dr. de Campo) has developed models for Deep Sea communication, inspired by the work of Louis Bec and Vilem Flusser: A number of agents simulate aspects of the communicative behavior of different deep sea creatures. Very little is known about communication in the deep sea; more unknown means of sound production are to be expected.
